Character CreationFollow

Since everyone's throwing out suggestions in another (long) thread about how we should create our characters (Aion, WoW, FFXI, etc etc...) has anyone here tried The Sims 3?

It's incredibly simple to design your character, but it also adds lots of diversity because everyone looks different.

You have the option of simple (choose items a'la Mr Potato Head) or advanced (click a section of the face and use slider bars).

You can also click from a list of preset colours, or go into advanced mode and choose the colours yourself - and also with hair, you can separate it into roots/main hair/highlights/tips, which can create some really funky hairstyles.

Obviously SE could add these to other parts of the body as well, as The Sims doesn't currently have options like this.

WoW's was very simplistic, Aion's looked very complicated, and FFXI's was just crap. I was really impressed with how the new Sims let you design your character.

Does anyone else have any thoughts? The last thread was getting a bit confused and long so I made a new one Smiley: grin

I dont really care about character creation, and if you want to spend hours on how your character should look like, i reckon you should play spore or stick with sims, honestly.

The thing is, considering how long you're spending looking at your character (and other characters), it IS important to get it right.

And considering how much it's brought up on this forum, and other forums on this site, it's something that lots of people want SE to get right.

Something is wrong when you can walk around town and see 5 Tarutaru White Mages all looking exactly the same... and it's not even a surprise to see this.

Fix't that for you. There will always be a reasonably large portion of the playerbase that hits "Randomly generate a character" and then starts the game, and never regrets it.

On the other hand, there's people like me, which have deleted characters before due to not liking the way they look after a week or so of playing them.

Good point.

Honestly, I'd say that it's really important to most people that character customization is at least "good enough" in terms of flexibility. I think most players appreciate these things, whether they mix and match some presets or get down into the nitty gritty. Complaints that customization in games is unnecessary are rare.

And I'd also like to be a smartass and point out that even players who are apathetic about appearances are still affected by them as they play through the game. Mostly, though, it's just very important in that regard that their characters look good, which we know they will in FFXIV since SE shells out for good art, but it doesn't hurt if they're unique and identifiable as their character at a glance.

As long ias i can report someone for looking wrong.. like having ears bigger then the body, missing the chin, having eyes upside down and stuff like that.. in sims you can do that. (i have seen it done in games like Perfect World >< )

it would really kill the fun for me if too many players tried to do that XD

I personally hope there is just a lot of hairstyles, faces, and sizes that we can choose from but are still made by Square Enix.

I like that a lot of MMORPGs are aiming for "unlimited customization".
But they try to do this by adding tons of confusing sliders for everything from your forehead size to the size of your eyeballs (inside the socket).

I haven't played Aion, and it doesn't look too bad.

But the potential for people to 'troll' the game with really horrible, ugly, deformed characters is still there.

I know that with Perfect World, I just couldn't manage to make a decent looking one.

All of my Archers ended up coming out like emo Chinese boys, then I had to delete and start over.

At one point I forced myself to go on, but I just hated my character so much that I didn't want to work toward his progression.

I think all of those sliders just made it way too difficult for me.

Before quitting the game I finally made this beast:

(Never mind, I guess nobody wanted to see my Hitler person)

it would be nice to have a middle ground between character customization in FFXI and in Sims3. I think we can all agree that FFXI was lacking in this department. On the other hand, having something as customizable as the sims 3 would probably be considered overboard.
