Just out of curiosity's sake, how many FFXI player's are going to switch races from the one they originally chose for the first game? What about jobs?

Do you think the balance between the races will stay the same? As I remember it went elvaan > hume > Taru > mithra > Galka.

I think I'll be Mithra again, but that all depends on the possibility of new races, if theres a new one I prefer I'll go for that.

As for job, I've always gone for the magey types. In FFXI I was a SMN/WHM. Been thinking of going WHM again, but I might try something new.

I guess it also depends on what races have what attributes. If I do go mp user then I'd wanna be a char which has good magic stats. :3

Gonna be Galka for sure, the über-race.

If heavy hitting jobs look fun I'll be one of those, but I might start as a tank if the game will have such role (tanking was such fun in XI). Hopefully there'll be Viking rather than Paladin though!

I originally started as a Taru, then quit and came back as Hume. I usually play a mage or support type character so I tend to lean towards those races. I think I'll go for the FFXIV equivalent of Elvaan or Galkan, but I would like to hear the lore behind each race before I really decide.

I played a hume in FFXI, I choose it due to it being the most balanced race, and being a newbie at the time I wasnt sure which job I was going to end up maining, and so it seemed the sensible choice.

I havent decided what type of character I want to play in FFXIV, I'll probabally wait until its closer to the release date when more info is available before planning a character. But I quite like the idea of choosing somthing different to hume this time around, time will tell :)

Depends on the race's back story a lot for me. If it is an aesthetic choice, solely, I would go for the Taru. But, I also liked their lore the most in FFXI.

If their story sucks, I may find myself going elsewhere. It isn't that I RP, but I hate having characters that I find boring.

I don't really care about stats (I'll farm for better gear if I have to). And I assume it will be like in XI where any race can have any job.

So Taru unless a better race is introduced, of the Taru's story sucks bad enough that another can make up for it (Mithra is #2 in aesthetics for me).

I'm still planning on Galka, and probably a tank job. My RL friend that's joining me is already planning on WHM.

I don't know about everyone else, but I was actually slightly dissapointed when I found out they'd not changed the races, so far screenies have shown them as near-identical. Was kinda hoping they'd come out with something new for it, even if it was similar. I heard speculation about 'manthras' or 'girlkas' but thought even this was tragically unimaginative (besides I always just assumed that galkas and mithras were really just the same race and got their furry groove on behind - thankfully - closed doors).
I guess I'll go with another Elvaan or a Mithra if there's nowt else, All I hope is that next time I pick an Elvaan with an elvis quiff in bright white hair in my character creation it dosen't come out in-game as looking like a lanky blonde version of Simon from The Inbetweeners.

I haven't decided yet, but I think I'd like to put myself in a position of challenge. IE a Galka WHM or Taru WAR or something. Not specifically those races and classes, but a race that is more specialized. I usually lean towards a THF type class, so we'll see what class would make me an under dog in that role and I'll most likely pick it.

I liked having a Hume for effective versatility, but I want a challenge this go around.

I will probably switch, hopefully to an altogether new race. Ultimately it will depend on which character design I like the best. Hopefully attributes won't make much difference because I'd rather them not be a factor in my decision.

It's actually Hume> Taru> Elvaan> Mithra> Galka. About twice as many Hume and Taru as Elvaan and Mithra, and about twice as many Mithra or Elvaan as Galka.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Considering they are meant to be similar, that isn't surprising.

But, even so, they actually are quite different when you really look at them.

Take, for example, the Galka. Compare the XIV one to the XI one and you will notice a LOT of differences (and I'm just talking about ones that have nothing to do with better graphical capabilities). Stature, Tail, number of fingers (or so I'm told), proportions (the XI Galka had shorter legs). Also, though it is hard to tell, it looks like their nose is normal now. Is it still clearly the one meant to be the Galka alternative? Yeah. But it IS very different.

With the Humes there isn't that big of a change, naturally, but it IS there. The XIV Humes have stronger features (more western, too) where the XI models had rounder angles (more Asian). Not a big change, no. But, as they are the race meant to be most human, you can't expect much else.

We haven't seen a Taru in the trailers, but there are some differences noticeable in the art. It doesn't look like they have the animal noses, for one. And their heads look smaller to me.

So, yeah. They are similar. But, if you look, they are actually fairly different considering they aren't meant to be completely different races, aesthetically.

I would most likely try this time Galka, or any new race if it looks cool.

I got 3 in mind

-Blue mage if its a opinion always wanted to be a BLU in FFXI but guess that never happened.
-Geo if its a opinion I do like BLM and that could be my replacement for Geo but I always liked how Geo controls the weather.
-SMN depends in story and gameplay made the mistake of getting it in FFXI and it had a great story, but was very weak and alot of downtime for so little work. (PS: the AF armor was horrible yuck)

Well, whatever job I choose, I would prefer it if I didn't receive a penalty against it based the race I choose. In other words, I would prefer to see no variation in begining stats and potential growth. I think there is sufficient difference in the differences between the jobs. This is for all the people in FFXI that became taru tanks or galka mages. I know there is gear that can make up the gap, but we all know there will always be a visible difference in performance. All I am saying is I don't want to be torn between choosing a race that best benefits my job of choice or choosing the one that I find most visually appealing.

I'm hoping SE doesn't go with this type of approach in FFXIV. I loved being an Elvaan in XI but hated the limitations to MP and INT.

With that note, if there will be "Manthra's" I will be playing that race for sure (provided the male mithra is on the "masculine" side hehe). Although I may stick with the Elvaan race again.

I was Elvaan last time around, and I'm planning to go hume this time around for the versatility. Started as MNK (and stayed with it) in XI, and I'm planning on starting as WHM-equivalent in XIV. I may want to get more into nuking later on. Or if they have something similar to BST, I may go with that later on too.

Then even later, I may want to level a melee or tank. Seeing as how I may want to try several things out, it makes sense to pick a versatile race.

Man, that's going to be a tough call. I think my easiest time to get though the game was being a hume.

This time around I have my mind set on a support, ranged, or main healer class. I'd probably go Elvaan if they give them that cool ranged attack stance like in XI, or Galka because of durability for endgame... it's just going to be tougher for doing mage jobs.

I went mithra as I didn't know what job I wanted to play and their stats were versatile.
Ended up going black mage and regretting not being taru.
Will go mage again, so will wait and see.

A bit disappointed though...new game, would prefer new races.

The background story of the different races are irrelevant to me. The look and style of the race is secondary. The number one defining thing for me is whatever race will allow for me to be the most potent offensive spell caster, that's what I will be. Assuming there is not base stats for different races than I will be a mithra again.

Depends. I played Elvaan in XI. I like elves overall but I also like races like mithras. I never played mithra because there wasn't a male counterpart. Hopefully if they have male mithras I'll give it a try. If they have other races similar to mithra. Ie. Beast-like. I might want to try those as well.

Well lets see. I originally played an Elf, then a Taru, then a Hume, and then a Hume again. So I hope there's something more interesting than those. If there is a Gria type race non gender-specific I'll play a male Gria. If not and by chance there is a Mithra Male I'll be that. As far as job I've always gravitated towards the melee Jobs. So if there is anything like a DRK that isn't as hated as it is in FFXI I'll be that.

It really depends for me. If the galka have any of that whole "enslaved by the humes to work in their mines" factor going on, I doubt I'll be willing to put up with the years of abuse I'll get. However, if there's a viking like class, so help me, I'm going to make a galka character, though my main will probably be a hume.
