Hopefully SE will improve the storage and auction house systems to the point where mules will not be necessary in FFXIV.

But if people were willing to pay for additional characters in FFXI, it might be difficult for SE to give them away for free this time around.

Yes.

FFXI (and most likely XIV) are different in that XI has jobs and you could play every job on one character. XIV will also have jobs (different than XI, but it sounds similar to some degree). The devs never imagined people having 3, 4, 5+ jobs @ 75 thus needing so much equipment. They've learned a lot since then and I believe they'll implement that in the game. With that said, if they keep the same design mechanic of doing everything on ONE character, then yes, they will charge more for extra characters. While annoying, I don't have a problem with this as long as they alleviate storage problems that XI had.

This.

Mules are something that needs to be done away with in all MMOs really. It's an outdated concept that is nothing but a headache.

Depending on how the AH system (or its analogue) works, I would still feel behooved to have mules so that I can access more AH slots in more markets, er... towns.

I agree about storage though... having to store our **** on mules is bogus. Even with mules, it was still tight because of all the r/x stuff. And I only had 1 lv 75...

But unless we have unlimited AH slots and there is only 1 AH for the whole world, I have a hard time imagining going with no mules.

Hopefully they did learn from FFXI and actually come up with a better inventory/storage system. It kind of sucks having to pay extra for mules just because they don't give you enough space to store all the items you have. Having to mule your gear when you change to a certain job was one of the most worst parts of FFXI.

It also depends on the type of gear they have. If there's all these situational sets and gear swaps inventory could fill up fast. But hopefully FFXIV gear system is different then the way it was in XI.

Extra fee per char isn't so bad if its only for people who want a char that is a different race or something.

Now that you guys mention it, lets hope and cross our fingers that they implement a new system for the Auction house and maybe raise the money we get off quest so it dosent seem like I'm getting paid in pennies for a quest i needed 3 or 5 players to help me do, lol and maybe just a little bit for money off the mobs for beginning players enough to where they can afford armor and weapons, heh i remember when i started FFXI, i spent like 2 days trying to save up for a Scythe (although this was when i was new and before i learned that a scythe was useless for a Warrior)

If they've learned anything at all, they won't. Characters take up a trivially small amount of server space. The cost to SE for a player to have one character or 50 is largely the same. Limiting the player to 1-5 characters would show that SE still doesn't understand game design when it comes to MMORPGs and still enjoys creating arbitrary bull ****.

Hope they don't. I would rather pay $15/mo and get something like 6-8 character slots versus the current FFXI payment model. If they choose to stick with the FFXI model, then I would hope they would do something to alleviate the need for mules. I wouldn't have had any mules in FFXI if I was provided sufficient space for all my RDM, BLU and BRD gear. To be fair I doubt they foresaw the level of min/maxing players expected from each other.

Letting you play all roles on a single character is grounds enough for a small fee (like 1 buck) per extra character. There should be no need for a mule and the inventory problems should be fixed. You should not be forced to have extra characters but if you want some I feel like a small fee is justified. FF is not like any other mmo, and letting you play all roles on a single character is special.

I love the idea of having a mule for crafting, I always role played that my one mule was a loyal servent, and that I could do no wrong. (male hume, crafted) and my Tarutaru pack-mule that carried all my items... he hated me, but he did what he was told :p.... So I would love to have another mule depending on how the craft system worked. and what the job system will be like. but I do not want to pay $1.00 for each mule.
