No no no, there has been no talk of an expansion yet. Talk about putting the cart before the chocobo!

But what I did notice was that in the description of the Hyur, it states that they came to Eorzea from 'neighboring continents.'

Now, perhaps I just wasn't paying that close attention, but I had thought that Eorzea was the entire world (like the Earth). It would appear though, that Eorzea is just a region that encompasses the continent Aldenard as well as some of the islands around it.

So, this implies that there are other continents out there that could be used for future expansions!

I mean, sure I'm getting really carried away here. But I'm just so excited about this game that I can't help speculate about every little thing!

FFXIV: Lancer, Fisher, Culinarian
FFXI: DRK 55, WAR 30, THF 27, DRG 27 (all retired)
WoW: Hunter 70, Warrior 29, Druid 26, Warlock 22, Shaman 19 (all retired)
EQII: Shadowknight 36 (retired)

I don't see why not. Either it could be a new story line in the possible expansion or perhaps it could possibly that they are just telling us a very small part of what they can come out with. For a game being worked of for about 5 years they have given us very little info about the world. What i could possibly thing that that maybe some of the neighboring lands could be introduce closer to the release possibly giving us more in site on the worlds or perhaps races. Just a guess.

Eorzeapedia has both dengeki and famitsu summarized and I can't remember which one had it, but they said the developers are already planning expansions to go beyond Eorzeas confines. Which makes sense really considering they realize now how long FFXI can last. Even FFXI planned for one expansion from the start and started working on another when they realized FFXI was a success. Zilaart expansion came out like 7 MONTHS after FFXI's initial release fyi.

I also inferred that new expansions would probably take place in other regions of the globe. I mean, FFXI did that as well-- it's nothing especially new.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Gonna take a stab at it.

Eorzea will be the equivalent of the starter cities in XI. You will do the missions there then later they will introduce a higher threat like that empire they were talking about.

After we deal with the evil empire we find out that, ZOMG, there is something even MOAR evil then them. I know crazy..

After we defeat a god or two we run out of sh*t to do. So we journey to a "undiscovered land that was there all along" and deal with what is plaguing them.
In this new place(read: undiscovered land that was there all along) we start to lower the population of tiny pink elephants that die if you even look at them funny. know, pink elephants are just plain not cool. Oh yeah we also kill an avatar or two.

After that everyone will be standing around going "lol wut?" and trying to guess what we could possibly do next. So we discover a portal that leads us back in time (cue wavy flash back graphics). We find new places to explore (read: places that were there all along in the present but we just never felt the need to explore).

We also find our mother before she gave birth us but we don't know she is our mother because we never met our mother and fall in love, ***** them and give birth to ourselves. Whoa..paradox. We also find out that god we killed earlier was just some dude in a costume with nothing better to do. Turns out his death released a great evil, who knew? A collective "Oh Shi-" ensues.

So we kill this "real evil ******* god, thing, guy that really isn't in a costume..or is he?" and peace finally returns to the world. Everyone screams hurray! and begin to have crazy drunken *** except for you because you screwed your own mother you sick @#%^.

The end...

...or is it?

From what I believe, they have given us "Eorzea" to begin with. Which is just a region of the world that is "Hydaelyn".

And this time SE made it clear it is just a region. So when it comes to making an expansion, they can give us more regions to expand to and adventure in.

Comparing this to FFXI, to make expansions they had to invent new places. Or even throw us back into other times.

But now they have started from the beginning, telling us the world is bigger than what we originally start with. So expanding this will be easily done.

I think it's a good idea.

i think, from the start the middle lands of vanadiel were only a part of the world, at least with zilart(don't know if they modified things with it), it was know the world was bigger(at least from reading the vanadiel tribune), that didn't prevent SE to go in differents directions for the expensions, zilart and cop didn't even left the middle lands, aht urgan just gave us a small part of a continent, and wog too was only in the middle lands...

while SE may want to keep some mystery about the "outside" world, having a "complete" world to explore seems appealing to us, "adventurers"(well, maybe, just maybe... SE is just too lazy to bother making a world...)

What makes you think these area's wont be included from the start? Square enix keeps pushing the point about how Eorzea is just a region to a whole new world, and keeps mentioning other lands, and giving information about them. I would say that there will probably be a lot, aside from Eorzea already accessible from the get go. But I'm sure down the road they will add expansions with new regions far far far away. However, I think the world of Haedalyn is going to be pretty expansive from the start.
Long Live Vana Diel.

What makes you think these area's wont be included from the start?

precisely because they got to save things for future plots and expansions ?

i'd rather have just a continent at start then discover more of the world from time to time than have everything at start then crappy stories about some moogles for the rest of the game...

You know in FF4... or maybe it was 5... I don't know, one of those... there was a part where characters went underground and found a whole underground civilization and also another part where they left the planet and went to the moon. I think FFXIV could easy do similar things too. Even if they come out with a few expansions and run out of continents, they could send us to another planet or underground or something. SE did mention that this world is more advanced than Vanadiel.

In FF3 they both went underground and to the moon. They also went to the moon in FF8 (though, it was fairly brief).

I'm thinking going to the moon wouldn't be terribly well received by the players. FFXI already has a number of underground things going on (virtually all dungeons along with Norg and some other minor places).
