LS Airship System by Arcano! (Me)Follow

Here's a small system I've devised for LS airships in FFXIV. It'll be based on 4 parts: how to acquire one, its uses, customization, and its accessibility.

Overview

LS airships will be smaller versions of the large scale transport airships being able to carry 15-30 people, depending on the size. For an example, battleship is to frigate as transport airship is to linkshell airship. They will have uses for transportation, protection, battles, while also having features in customization.

~>~>How to Acquire One<~<~

Acquiring an airship is no easy process. To do so, you must pass a series of quests, gather a certain amount of materials necessary for building the airship, provide enough gil, and finally reach a high enough LS rank. (A brief outline of LS ranking can be found a few posts down) For a larger ship, it would require more gil, additional quests, more materials and of course, a higher LS rank.

~>~>Uses<~<~

Transport – A LS airship can be used to teleport specific LS members and/or guests who have guest passes. A guest pass can be bought from your airship’s staff members. For a set price, a person can grab a ride with your airship, potentially using it as a taxi service. All profits will go to the LS bank. Transportation will not be free roam, but rather to set points – one each zone. (Landing Hubs – See below)

Protection/Battles – You will use your LS airship for offensive purposes in three instances: pirates, landing hubs (See below) and pvp.

Pirates
While flying, there may be encounters with pirates. To protect you, mages could attack with spells with the help of ranged attacks. Additional aid can be found from the on board airship cannons. When/if boarded, melee hops in. In the event you are eliminated, your airship is stolen and you resurrect at the nearest home point. You must pay a hefty fine to buy another one, as well as customized parts to the airship.

Landing Hubs
At landing hubs, airship cannons, mages, and ranged attacks can help rid the area of monsters to help people boarding.

PvP
Airship battles will not be open world PvP but in a mini game event. An arena type battle over seas will test the skill of your flying ability (Open flying), ranged attacks, and boarding. This hasn’t been entirely perfected; it’s only a rough outline. Airships will also aid in LS ballista matches – providing aerial support.

~>~>Customization<~<~

Airship Parts Vendor
This is a vendor that sells certain parts for your airship who works in sync with the Airship Construction Company. [ACC] (Work in progress name) He sells items such as desks, chairs, maps, lamps, ect. for your interior design needs. For exterior customization, he sells schematics which you can bring to the ACC who will apply it to your airship for a small fee.

Airship Construction Company [ACC]
The ACC will take schematics and apply them to your airship over a period of a few hours up to a few days for larger requests. They will do such changes as printing your LS name on your airship, changing it’s color, changing the shape, adding lights, or even adding extra canons; the options are nearly endless.

Crafting
For certain items that you can’t obtain from the Airship parts vendor, you can obtain through crafting such as woodworking or metalworking. All higher tier items will be obtained through this method. (Such as gold plated chairs in comparison to wooden ones)

Staff/Bodyguards
You can hire staff that will do various activities such as driving the ship, buying and selling items, manning the onboard cannons, or even serving as a small militia against pirates.

~>~>Accessibility<~<~

Airships will be able to be boarded and exited from two places, cities and landing hubs.

Landing Hub
This is a set point, found in certain zones. Each point will be unlockable via a crystal acquired like gate crystals for teleports in FFXI. At a Landing Hub there will be a place to dock your airship; however it will not always be free of monsters, this is where your on board canons come in handy. There will be no parking at these landing hubs. You can either call your airship to you (flown by your rent-a-captain, see below) or you can exit your airship and it will fly back to one of several airship docking stations found around Eorzea.

Cities
Certain cities will have airship docking stations where you can store your airship. These docking stations are found only in large cities where they can be dispatched to a called landing hub for a nominal fee. This rent-a-captain will fly your airship to you with no chance of being attacked by pirates.

Epilogue
I guess that’s it, any questions, just post them below. This is just a work in progress I wanted to share ^_^

Glad you guys liked it :)

Oh darn! The LS ranking link wasn't working...

Let me explain, LSs will now have a ranking system (1-10) and will increase their rank by member count, raid progression, mission ranks completed (From an average LS member standpoint) and finally donations to the city. (Like the donation of crystals to city guards to increase your ranking)

I don't have much to contribute about airships, but I will say that I'm really keen on the idea of big cooperative projects like this tailored to linkshells. Especially if they involve crafting -- suppose you had to bring together woodworkers, smiths, and alchemists to build something like this piece by piece, with other members of the shell (say, disciples of hunting or whatever they're called) gathering materials.

You have some good ideas here and I agree that making it a cooperative LS process (rather than just the leader going to the airship store and buying one, for example) could be a lot of fun. Perhaps your guild could get a rental warehouse until it gets an airship, and the airship's construction can occur in the warehouse. In FFXI there's really nothing that ties LSs together other than their pearl and the battles they fight together.

So having said that, I would make some changes to the system, for both technical and gameplay reasons.

Firstly, as cool as it would be to have airships that you can actually control and fly around the world, I kind of doubt we'll be getting something so sophisticated. However, one thing that FFXI sorrily lacked was any kind of place that players could use as a linkshell headquarters. And in fairness, it's a complicated mechanic with a lot to consider.

But guild airships don't have as many problems, because they're in the air. I'm talking about the airship actually being the guild headquarters. You don't have to worry about it physically existing anywhere in the game world. Airships could run on aetheryte technology, the same technology that allows for teleportation, and as a result, allow guild members to teleport on and off the airship. So your "home point" could actually end up being your guild's airship.

Having these guild airships removed from the rest of the world would make a lot of customization aspects easier to manage, like design, furnishing, size, and features like shops, games, services, etc.

And of course your airship could drop off your entire guild in the area for your events. No more people running from all corners of the globe to meet up... you'll all arrive together.

As for PVP, I think a minigame is the smart way to go about it. I'm reminded of Skies of Arcadia's airship battle system. Something similar to that though on a more complex level could work nicely. Basically there were stations to man on the airship that served various functions, and ultimately the ship has HP. You could also allow some PVP combat elements to be thrown in. i.e., some people man the stations while others fight on deck.

Now, I'm not keen on the idea of being able to completely lose your airship to pirates. Let them loot your coffers or something, and you could lose some reputation.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

You make some interesting points Kachi, but hey this is basically a freelance idea. I'm letting the community run with it mainly for entertainment purposes :P

But glad you guys like it!
