Ok, so as we all know by now you weapon determines your job. With that in mind I thought I'd speculate the jobs (doing my best to avoid previous names) based off the FFXI weapon list. I'll ask some questions towards the end.

* Bows= Archer (confirmed)
* Axe= Gardener(Confirmed)
* Club= Cleric
* Dagger= Rogue
* Great Axe= Woodsman
* Great Katana= Swordmaster
* Great Sword= Sentinel
* Hand-to-Hand= Brawler
* Katana= Assasin
* Marksmanship= Gadgeteer
* Polearm= Lancer
* Scythe= Fieldsman
* Staff= Thaumaturge (confirmed)
* Sword= Gladiator(confirmed)
* Throwing= Grenadier

The obvious problem in doing this is that some of the weapons may not show up, and we we are missing some. For example:

* Hammer= Blacksmith (confirmed)
* Fishing pole= Fisherman (confirmed)

Also, in case you haven't done the math. FFXI has a total of 15 weapon types. Considering that may be more, say 5 or so, types unaccounted for that equals 20 or so jobs, if they use the FFXI weapon types, off the bat. Are new jobs, via expansion, even feasible at that point? If they are do you add more weapons, or do you tack new jobs to the old ones. Maybe not release all weapon at once? Your thoughts?

Edit: Blackmage/smith mix up.

I am thinking that it would be a hatchet instead of an axe for garner. It might be more of a tool to equip instead of a weapon for crafting "jobs" then a sickle instead of a scythe. and with that said we can use axe for a war type job or a scythe for another. Probably they will come out with basic weapons like staff sword axe and so on first then maybe expand later with new weapons/job with expansions like katana great katana, a book for a sch type job or something. Idk just a thought.

There is also a probability that jobs will be linked to certain weapons or weapon subtypes, not weapon types - so, for example, different kind of staff will lead to different mage jobs.

I thought about that. Are broad swords, rapiers, and scimitars under the same umbrella?

Doh, thanks for pointing that out. My brain malfunctioned.

To expand on the OP and what Phess said there are many sub weapon types

So within Sword there are...

Broadswords and Shortswords - Thicker one handed blades you would usually associate with a PLD type job
Rapiers, Epee's - Lighter, Thinner one handed blades associated with a Fencer type job or in FFXI terms a RDM job
Cutlasses, and others I can't remember - a Flat curved blade think Pirates of the Caribean, Prince of Persia, or BLU job

Thats just swords I think most of the weapons found in FFXI have many sub catergories.

I think the other sword type is talwar.

As far as other weapons, there are spears and lances that both fall under polearm; falx is a type of greatsword, plus the Algol/Bahadur; clubs can further be subdivided into wands (aka paddles or cooking spoons) and maces; H2H has at least five, with claws, cesti, katars, patas, and baghnahks.

but it'd sux to have to stick to weapons that looks the same for as long as you play "x job"...

like in pso, you had blue, green, yellow, and red weapons as you grinded(then that rares loocked unique), the only changing thing was the color of some part...

sticking to one type of weapon for a job doesn't looks so fun.

that and a "pld" sould need a shield to be one, not (just)a sword

actually, there are also halberds, tridents(i'll put mezraks here but they should be another category) and couses(i'd put ryunohige there)

They should have whips from FFIV!(?)

also more ideas:
FFTA weapon list wrote:

III.Weapons

ii.Blades
iii.Sabers
iv.Knightswords
v.Greatswords
vi.Broadswords
vii.Knives
viii.Rapiers

x.Staffs
xi.Rods
xii.Maces
xiii.Bows
xiv.Greatbows
xv.Spears
xvi.Instruments
xvii.Knuckles
xviii.Souls
xix.Guns
IV.Shields

I bring up FFTA because they were used to teach your characters abilities, but were generally usable by multiple jobs, they just sometimes taught different jobs different things.

FFTA, Equipment List wrote:

WpnDEF:3
MagPOW:0
MagRES:3

Evade:5
Desc:Sacred sword. Prayers are inscribed upon the blade

The descriptions they've given us so far remind me the most of FFII, FFTA, and FFXI.

I would like to see some kind of gun or advanced weaponry. Especially for a ranged attack.

Maybe to replace bows...since the game is in a more futuristic setting.

I'm still thinking it's possible that "your weapon determines your job" is something to be interpreted more loosely. Maybe if you equip a bow, your job doesn't suddenly switch to Archer. You're just an archer because you're using a bow.

It's also possible that the particular type of weapon won't be fixed so that Archers always and only use bows, but that each individual weapon will be assigned a particular job. So there may be knives that make one an Archer as well as bows. And there may be bows that make one something different altogether.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

they could add nunchaku or spike for glove as a weapon for a martial artist or something. im sure there is a lot more possibility that just did not think about... whip, spike-fail, chain (personnaly like this one) and probably a lot more.

with each weapon a different type of job, i could see beastmaster type job having a whip as weapon

It's also possibly that not each weapon has it's own unique job, for example axe, sword, greataxe, and lances could all be gladiator, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there probably are not going to be as many jobs as xi has now, ever in xiv.

reason being SE was running out of ideas and we all know it, they had way to many jobs doing the same thing in only slightly different ways, occasionally more annoying ways, I think this time they'll stick to a short list of actually (relatively) unique jobs

this means that the first statement becomes all the more likely. as a side note, gladiator could serve as several jobs by allowing you to build it differently, so if you spend time using swords and learning skills like cover you could play a tank, while if you use spears and learn skills like jump you effectively become a dragoon, while keeping gladiator and archer as different jobs with more than just play style being the defining feature

with that said I do think there will be more jobs announced as I'm confident blacksmith and fisherman are not going to be the only 2 (4 if you count gathering disciplines) craft jobs, there will be more released, just not 20... or maybe 20 but including craft jobs...

if that makes any sense

'9 to 5 w/ a sword.'

Thought this was a thread about epic deleveling due to skill/exp loss. Would have hurt to end up deleveling all the way from level 9 sword back to level 5 sword. Fortunately at level 5 you can't lose any more skill points.

How about using multiple weapons at the same time?

For example, when I played XI my THF used both daggers/knives, and simultaneously a bow or x-bow. I mean, in XI you could have both melee and ranged equipped. I wonder how this will work? It will be a little boring if you are not able to use a ranged weapon without "becoming an archer".

And what about dual-wield, supposing there will be such a function in XIV? Dagger in one hand, sword in other. Now I'm a THF, no a PLD, now I'm a THF again wtf?

Seriously though: I wonder how they will make this work in the system as it is being presented at the moment.

EDIT: Spelling

Is it safe to assume Bards will use flutes and Dancers will use scarves?

Hopefully Bard is in the game. . .
It'd be very interesting if they added different instruments such as flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, and harps. If done right, it could make the job more strategic and probably more fun if each song actually has its own recognizable tune. *wishes*

I had always hoped SE would release an electric guitar as a sort of gag-weapon for bard.

Here is a thought, like a previous poster suggested, a Gladiator has axe, sword, spear..etc.(your base class). Then as you level with a specific weapon it gives you a class branch to evolve. Leveling with an axe will open up a job geared twards axes and skills to compliment. leveling with a sword could unlock another job tree. Now you could still use your axe with that new job, just not as proficent. Even more depth... equiping a shield with that sword may open a different path as well (defender-Paladin). There would also be hybrid branches that cross between melee and magic. RDM prime example, as you lvl with sword or staff will open up that branch. Now you can choose to lvl yor rdm with sword or staff, opening up skill in both melee and magic, but not proficent in either.
