If there happens to be a Bard type Job/Discipline I want to see Violins, and maybe several different kinds of flutes, clarinet's, maybe even a classic style acoustic guitar? What about an accordion!?

We all know disciplines won't work the same in FFXIV as jobs did in FFXI, but I'm sure we will see some similarities between the disciplines and jobs. I hope that one of the many paths you can take in FFXIV will lead you down a Bard/Minstrel path, and I hope they add several different kinds of instruments. I hope the different instruments make different sounds, and have different songs. But more than anything, I hope one of them is a Violin, that plays a really cool "Tap Dancing" "Jig Music" old fashion tune to it, something that sounds kind of like this:

Who's with me?!

After using the LOTRO music system for years now, I love having music in the game. I think it would be an interesting "hobby" to have in the game, but as a profession, I'm not so sure. Bard certainly has a long and illustrious history with FF, but I think I'd like to see a music system in the game that anyone can use regardless of their job.

It's fluff though, so I'm not going to be heartbroken if it's not in the game at launch. I'd rather see a well-polished, well-rounded, and bug-free game hit the shelves first

I'm kind of hoping that this time around, they actually allow you to write your own music to an extent. Personally I have little interest in playing BRD or any similar job (Bard level 1 wewt), but I've always thought it would be a cool feature.

So I was actually a little pleased when they added those bells in XI that you can set to play different notes. It shows that maybe they're thinking along those lines.

Basically it might just let you write a few measures worth of melody (some chords beneath if they're really ambitious) and assign those to your songs. A little customization. But then I was thinking that it would be funny if the people in your party could adjust the volume of your music, and the louder the music was, presumably the more they liked it and the more effective your song was.

Of course that would result in Bards yelling at people to TURN UP YOUR VOLUME, to which there would be inevitable replies of WRITE BETTER MUSIC.

Well, it would be funny to me, at least :d

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

The music system in LOTRO uses ABC notation, so you can do just that. The implementation is really well done as well. There are a range of instruments to choose from, and you can write notation for seperate instruments and sync everyone up in the game and play music together.

Here's a FF related example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkDLYn44NGg&feature=related

It's not 100%, but with the right composition and transposing, you can do just about anything with it.

Aw, that's cool. Then XIV better have something like that.

I always thought it'd be cool if having an entire band behind you playing music gave you some ridiculously good buffs. I'd have a band follow me everywhere, and I'd be like, I don't know, the man, or something.

Holy crap. I had no idea LotR's music system was so robust. I always liked the idea, but this should be a mandatory feature in future MMOs. And the applications to the BRD job are obvious and awesome.

I wish they'd add some sorty of Magic burst style to BRD songs.
I always liked how each instrument/voice made a harmony like This but you never really got to hear it

Even though I won't ever play a bard character, I think it would
be cool to have a create your own/ find the right pattern spell
creation. A la Eternal Darkness, for those of you who played
that.

Basically you'd be given a set of chords and melodies and the right
combinations would yield a certain spell. Different instruments
would have different spell sets and the casting time would just
be a long or short tune.

Given that it's a mmorpg the spells would be figured out pretty
quick. However you'd have to find the higher level chords out
questing or from an nm or something.

The songs would sound like what it is you're casting, a slow melodic
tune would be sleep, a fast hard song would be an attack buff.

If I hear the standard brd song from ffxi one more time...

I hope Bard doesn't exist in FFXIV.

I kinda hope it does, but in a way that resembles Corsair more rather than the FFXI Bard.

I'm hoping for lineage II blade dancer, all the same buffy goodness, much cooler looking and able to kill something on it's own.

Wow, I have to say I too am impressed with LOTRO's music system as well. I don't know about it being mandatory...... However, its little things like this that make players happy. Is it a necessary function? No. But it is something a lot of people would enjoy, and just enhances the gaming experience. That being said, I think it would be in SE's best interest to implement something like this. Now that I have seen how far it can be implemented in another MMORPG, it leaves little excuse not to do it in FFXIV. As for their being bards, I certainly hope there are. I never played bard, but I liked bard because it was so unique. I liked having bards in parties too (double march ftw). So hopefully they will have bards, and hopefully SE will seriously consider implementing a more complex music system. ****, for startes how about different songs sounding different?

If they do a bard job (a job i never rellay been a fan off) I hope they have alot off different instruments as you say, and they don't all play the same tunes as in FFXI.

I would also like something like that music system, cool stuff.

See, if you can put many smaller things like this in-game, it can really "flesh out" the world, and also take some focus of the constant loot hunt which many MMORPGs turn into.

****, without commenting on the actual quality of the game (I've never played it), but didn't Star Wars Galaxies have seperate classes for Entertainers (could dance in pubs if I recall correctly) and Traders?

It need not be as involved as that, but just providing those kind of tools would be great for the world I think.

FFXI really didn't have much of that additional flavour aside from its combat and crafting/HELM. Some stuff was added, like Chocobo breeding which is nice and all, but it'd be great to have the kind of stuff which *every* world pretty much has. Music, entertainment, smaller activities like that which only serve to bring some flavour to the gameworld.

yeah, entertainers generally just stood in the bar and gave buffs/cosmetic changes to whoever in exchange for a tip though. They got exp for dancing itself, not killing mobs so there wasn't a lot of reason for them to go outside. It's not really like FFXI where you bring several BRDs with you to party and whatnot.

Yay! I want piano!

But if that is too heavy just let them bards bring boomboxes and let them dancers dance to it.

Drums, violens, tubas, trombones - the whole orchestral section in a bards pocket. That could be quite a site and a feat.

Seriously though I would agree. Maintain the winds and strings - have each instrument (wind or string) be unique looking, sounding and have distinctual song boost modifiers. And quite frankly have more of those instruments be available.

I played a bard until I quit in 2004. I enjoyed the job actually. My biggest gripe is song duration. I do not want to have song buffs last for hours, mind you. But I would like them to last at least 5 minutes. If I and bards like me, didn't risk carpal tunnel with the job, it would make the job worthless altogether.

Drums!!!!!

I totally forgot about Drums. Ohh My GOD that would be freaking awesome. Thank you SO much for giving me more to fantasize about.

And I agree, a bit longer song, with a bit longer duration, would be really nice. Some songs maybe quick little tunes with shorter durations, but I agree with what you said. And yeah, I would also like different models of things like wind and string instruments. Like for wind instruments, trumpets, clarinets, what about a saxophone?! This just keeps sounding better and better...

I wouldn't mind if FFXIV had violins, as long as it isn't "over the top." Not every one enjoys the graphic depiction of violins.

Hmm...

I wonder if there's any chance of hooking up my Roland digital piano to the PS3 or computer... They're in different rooms, though.

How did people play music in LOTRO? Was it a keyboard accessory, or was it through the keyboard? I probably wouldn't bother if it's the keyboard. I'd probably be a BRD and move my piano into my living room if that were a possibility though...
