I haven't seen anything on here, but I'm sure it's already been addressed and I'm just missing it. Is FFXIV going to use a microphone, similar to WoW? I'm not a big fan of it, but it sure comes in handy for LS events... and would be preferable to vent or teamspeak with the PS3.

Also, is the mouse going to be a necessity? I don't know if the PS3 has or will have a mouse peripheral, but I **** sure hated using the mouse for all of the three days I spent on WoW.

No one asked the question in the interviews. So no way to know.

If all else fails I can still use skype.

According to a quote on BG, the game will once again be text only. As for the mouse, I hope they don't implement it again, and from the demos it did not seem like it was an essential component.

Videos have suggested that the Keyboard-only setup a la XI is available, which makes sense as they don't wish to alienate the PC XI crowd.

They haven't mentioned anything about voice chat, although personally I would dislike it if it were implemented. You raise a good point about PS3 not having vent, though. Maybe wireless headsets will be less of a ripoff in a year.

I think it would be a major mistake to exclude intuitive mouse support from FFXIV. Console players get keyboard + controller. I've grown rather fond of keyboard + mouse control on the PC. If they allow enough UI customization, I can see no legitimate reason to exclude mouse support. Everything from rapid, accurate camera movement to a more user friendly interface screams the need for a mouse. If people want to use keyboard only, they should be able to do that, too. After having spent so long with using the mouse as an integral part f gameplay, I think I would find keyboard-only to be an exceptionally clunky setup.

As for in-game voice support, I think SE probably knows that there are all kinds of quality voice applications that are free or relatively inexpensive to make use of. I see no need for them to try and reinvent the wheel on that one. It just means an extra cost on their end for something that not all players are going to feel comfortable using. I have a pretty solid preference for using voice chat in group activities just because of the speed at which you can relay information compared to typing, but it has to be quality, and creating and maintaining an integrated voice chat in an MMO is something that both LOTRO and WoW have tried to do but generally failed at.

I want to remember that D&D Online and Warhammer did an alright job in getting their voice chat working. It worked alright as a team chat, but there was no in game option for guild chat. So it was kinda annoying have to run a 3rd party voice chat on top of it all. Two different hot keys to chat got old fairly quickly.

I'm expecting some sort of voice chat integration into XIV. Online gaming in general has made the feature standard in titles across all genres, and relying on third party programs to provide the feature will exclude console users from the option. It's a feature that, while not personally appealing to me in most situations, would seem to be a glaring omission in a "next gen" MMO.

It wouldn't be a major issue for me if it were not implemented, because I often prefer to enjoy music, or conversation with friends/family when playing a game over listening to game chatter. But I do understand its usefulness in certain events, and not including a fairly ubiquitous and easily implemented feature into the MMO's client would seem to be a rather curious choice.

I suppose SE could take the stance that with unified servers, they feel the need to funnel chatter through the text based system and it's auto translate abilities. But with the majority of activities being performed by groups that speak the same language, I think that would be viewed by the community as an excuse rather than valid reasoning.

I don't think I could live without my mouse controlling certain aspects during game play.

Lol when My wife plays games she almost never uses the KB, perhaps only to chat here and there. she's all mouse.

I do believe though adapting to peoples' comforts would be a much better option for SE in this respect.

Isn't that pretty much how FFXI is setup? I mean, I know the mouse works... but I don't know of anyone that uses it.

Well, we used mouse and keyboard during the alpha, so mouse support will obviously be available in the final build as well.

I LOVE FFXI's controls. I know most mmo gamers would disagree though lol
I like being able to use only my wireless keyboard and play while on the couch or laying in bed.

I loved being able to hook up a ps2 controller to my PC and play FFXI with my feet propped up on the desk. If I wasn't typing chat, I didn't need the keyboard at all. I really hope FFXIV can be played just as smoothly with the controller, and that they don't expect everyone to adopt the keyboard just because it's necessary for chat.
