Yeah, there does seem to be some potential there.
Honestly, I'm a little bit disappointed that SE seems to be going with the same weapon system so far. I never really liked Monk weapons. They do like rather unwieldy. They should just go with actual gloves, including variant designs like brass/spiked knuckles type (and then iron, steel, etc. as the whole system went in XI).
I mean, Katars and all are fine, but they way they're designed in XI (and now apparently XIV judging from the screenshot of the Grappler), the Monk (oh, excuse me, Grappler) is holding onto this thin strip of metal that's not really ergonomic at all. I can imagine that weapon bending in his (or her!) grip the second it strikes something substantial, being deflected off to one side and thus making the Mon--Grappler lose all of his or her power.
But then again that's not to say the characters in these games wield melee weapons like they should. I'm especially looking at you, Elvaan females of XI >.>
