I know that SE has no plans at this time to make a mac client for FFXIV, but I wondered how the community would look at it? Do you think more people might play if you can play in Mac OS X without Boot Camp?

How difficult would it be to create a client for mac users once the game is already designed for Windows/PS3?

The real question is, why would it be worth the effort if one can just use boot camp?

It's not like any of the gamers with Macs aren't already accustomed to using Bootcamp or don't have a PS3/360.

+1 for a mac version

the market is growing with all these kids getting macs, hopefully there'll be a big enough market that they'll decide to port it at some point.

This is true. However, I'm sure more people would be happier to actually run the game in Mac OS X as opposed to Windows.

WoW has a Mac client and I think Warhammer Online is coming out with one. Possibly LoTRO in the near future as well.

There have been a couple threads on this so far, such as this one.

Overall these threads degenerate into the following points:

1) Shuddup Mac user, use boot camp.
2) Not economically viable to port to a platform with only 57 users (ie, no-one uses macs)
3) Windows is sooo much better than macs, buy a PS3 or a real computer

Personally, I think it's a fabulous idea, and anyone who uses any of the above replies doesn't know what they're talking about. Booting to boot camp is a last resort thing; it's a P.I.T.A. to require a reboot (plus a Ca$130 Windows licence and install) just to play a game. There are far more Macs out there than you think- if WoW and WAR both think it's worth porting, why not FFXIV?

Even SE thinks it's more than doable:

Nothing is set in stone, but we are shooting for PS3, Xbox 360 and Windows. This is not to say that there will not be a Linux or Mac OS version. Creating versions for those platforms would be a little harder, but it's not out of the question.

Quote taken from this interview.

I have to admit, I really don't understand the anger the idea of a Mac client seems to generate in some people. Why can't we have a native client so we can access the game in our OS of choice? There are a lot more of us than you think, especially in recent years...

As much as I like Macs, I can never imagine them ever coming out with a pure Mac client for FF. That platform would have to get way back in the line behind the Xbox-360 port.

lol Those are usually the arguments for porting a game to Mac OS X.

However, if the demand is high enough for a Mac client for FFXIV, SE should want to support. Is the demand there though? I'm not sure, that's up for them to decide. I don't see how expanding to another OS, this expanding the games market, could be bad.

I would just personally prefer to play natively on my Mac than through Boot Camp. I'm certain I'm not the only one.

I find it absolutely stupid that they would not create a client for mac. While it is true that you can simply use bootcamp, macs do run better while running the standard OS X. They have the ability to run windows but for performance/conflict prevention, wouldnt it simply be easier to create a mac client? Also, having spend year 11 and 12 of high school in california, it seemed to me that probably 6 or 7 out of 10 students, going away to college, were getting macs. That was four years ago now, so thats a lot of macs out there these days.

a Mac client would be wonderful, so i dont need to reboot just to play the game, besides windows is a big waste of hard drive space, no one should be forced to use it even for their favorite game/software, i wanna uninstall it asap...

I think Square-Enix would benefit from making a Mac client for FFXIV. From the look of it, FFXIV is going to be geared toward both hardcore and casual gamers. Most casual gamers probably don't buy computers specifically for gaming, computers which are almost always PCs. So if you assume that there is a market of casual gamers out there who have a Mac for whatever reason (school/work/personal preference) and have forgone the expensive PS3 console in favor of the XBox 360 or Wii, making a Mac client would reach out to those casual gamers who otherwise would not be able to play the game.

I'm one of those gamers, for sure. I played FFXI on a PC, quit after a couple of years, and scrapped the PC for a Mac for college. And I'm certain that I'm not the only one out there.

It seems like some interest is there for a Mac client, which is good.

I guess it will just be a wait and see type thing.

I would be extremely surprised if they came out with a Mac client. I'm going to be playing on PS3 so I won't bother with bootcamp (which is a nuisance) but I would definitely buy a mac version if it were there.

I just don't think enough companies want to spend the extra money when the percentage of users is still so low unfortunately.
