Did anyone else catch this from the ffxivcore translator?

English voice acting thus far, subtitles provided for other regions.

This was something I wondered about when they said there would be full VA... surely there won't be full VA for every language? Because that would probably get expensive, so I was a little worried for a second that it would be Japanese VA. Anyway, I'm really surprised that they're planning English onry voice acting for now. Maybe depending on how successful the game is, they'll do it for other countries.

*I know some people are wary of English VA. Personally it's never really bothered me any more than Japanese.

I wouldn't mind English VA if it's what it was designed for. In movies and animation, dubs are horrific. I'm of the opinion that you should always watch productions in their original language instead of raping it with subpar dubs. That goes for any language. Imagine Pan's Labyrinth with dubbing :v

With reason.

I don't care if there are voice actors, I just hope they leave an option to choose what language we can listen to. I can't stand games that force a certain setting on you just so their actors' work can get some recognition, even if it is negative recognition. If there isn't an option, this game'll be played muted.

Ahaha, there are some striking examples of bad English VA, but there are also some horrific Japanese VA as well. It's especially bad when they cast women for men roles, and god, sometimes the women playing the woman roles are so whiny it makes me want to jam a fork in my ear.

As for One Piece, ok, first of all, what 4Kids did to One Piece is easily one of the worst of such offenses (when you do such a horrible job, another company feels obligated to take it from you) and actually their dub kind of grew on me. The first several times I watched it, it was just for laughs, but it really did develop its own charm. Actually at first I thought it was an American attempt at anime, purely from the visuals.

Edit to say that I actually liked the intro. I know, I probably deserve to be rated down for saying so. Just... make it quick.

I wouldn't be too sure, I know the Resident Evil games (the early ones at least, I'm not too sure about the later ones) were all voiced in English, and subtitled for the japanese community.

I remember seeing a documentary on JP gaming, and they actually loved it, the games were a huge hit regardless of the English acting (On another note, anyone actually remember how hiliariously bad the voice acting in RE1 was? Oh those were the days!)

From what i read the response on this English voice thing is not so good among Japanese players.

They said the best way is to have other language option to choice.

Now, they either have to switch off the voice option, and play the game. Or plead to SE that exclude this voice thing.

Since SE announce it only include English voice, the game image has decreased alot.

I understand that DMC or RE in Japan, those titles are all in English voice.
However, for all FF series that released in Japan, they were all Japanese voice. It might be hard for them to swallow. Just like a Japanese movie, with English voice, and ask them to watch the movie with Japanese subtitle.

For me, i want a Japanese voice, because i know how bad those previous FF games with English voice casted. That's my 2 cents.

Just wanna ask, you guys prefer a Japanese voice with English subtitle, or a fully English voice FF game?

Honestly, I'd rather have none at all.

Say, if Prishe had been paired with an irritating voice actor, the character would have been completely ruined for me.

But honestly, I'd rather have the Japanese VAs, simply because the sheer number of voice actors in Japan, compared to the relative handful of decent VAs here.

That being said, SE has (almost) always picked good voice actors. If FFXII is a good example of the level of quality, I wouldn't be too concerned.

English dubs aren't always horrible, I've actually preferred a few over the JP voices. I always thought Kenshin was brilliant. GetBackers(ADV version) and Black Cat i've enjoyed as well, though I may be in the minority on those ones.

We have some good voice actors, we just really don't know how to pair them up correctly yet.

When it comes down to it, I will ALWAYS prefer the English VA to a game or anime, no matter the circumstances, simply because I understand the language and it's better for me to actually watch the medium without being distracted by the subs. And some of you are acting like all English VA is bad, when it is not the case. Recently, the number of good English VA has increased, due to characters being paired up correctly. The major problem with dubbing back in the day was that they would get VAs that would try to emulate what the Japanese voice of the character sounded like, instead of having that character sound the way an English audience would perceive their voice.

For example, Cloud of Darkness in Dissidia. The Japanese version went with an old woman's voice to fit her age, whereas the English version went with a sultry voice to fit her looks. Both work for the character, and both work for the audience they cater to, which is what has been happening these recent years if people would just take the time to actually acknowledge it.

Besides, I would rather have "crappy english VAs" than suffer through unbelievably high pitched girl characters, feminine sounding youths, and a multitude of characters that sound too much alike for me to tell the difference between.

But i disagree with you that we have bad voice actors on this side of the world, look at MGS, some of the best voice acting in video games.

Sure your not confusing XII with X?
People trash on X all the time, deservedly so.
The voice acting in XII was pretty darned good.

But yeah. While on the one hand I'm pleased about what this means in reguards to SE's dedication to a global market. On the other hand English Videogame Voice Acting makes a cold shiver run down my spine.

It's not too unprecedented for a Japanese game to only have English voice overs. People have mentioned games like RE and DMC, but even SE games have had a bit of the English-treatment. Look at FFX International or Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix. While, yes, there is still the original version without the English, the new versions don't even have the option for the Japanese voice-over. Those games often do very well.

I could see some outcry from some people, but if SE is going to make a game with voice-acting to be released around the world, without a ludicrous budget for VAing (which does take a lot of money), this does make the most sense. I just worry about the French audience playing a game with English voice overs... :p

I really do feel for the Japanese players getting stiffed on the VA, and I hope that they make it a priority to add it; however, naturally I'd prefer fully English to English subs.

Put it this way-- I was just as embarrassed as anyone to be playing FFX during the HA HA HA scene. But for me a couple of bad scenes don't do enough damage to the integrity of the game to counteract the immersion created by full VA, so overall I'm glad the game had it.

It's usually English for universally released games or game versions, the biggest example i could come up with is Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and KH2 Final Mix+

English Voice acting, Japanese everything else. English is getting to be a pretty well known language, unfortunately I can't say the same for Japanese. German and French players wouldn't understand Japanese, but theres a good chance they would know English.

I'm hoping I don't sound biased or racist, cuz that's TRULY not my intention, just giving my 2cents based off what I've seen in the games listed above and learning abroad in Europe and Japan.

The audio quality is kind of bad, but here's an episode subbed. It's not too estrogen driven. I had no idea the voice actor was even female until years after I saw the series.

Like others have said, I have no worries over the possibility of Voice work, especially in English. The only thing I will say is I hope they give audio sliders in this new game so people have the 'option' to mute voice work (or at least lower the volume on it) so you can still get sfx and background music still. Nothing wrong with having options in the cases of the people who would rather 'imagine' the characters voices in there own way (much like how so many people hate book to movie transitions... stuff you imagine happening in the books is interpretted differently by someone else).

As for Japanese >=< English arguement. FFX was Square-enix's first real foray into voice work, especially in the dub department, so the infamous 'ha ha ha' scene complaints is to me a moot point. I would be more worried about who is handling Localization/VA directors than the actual language of the voice actors (another reason not to have more than 2 voice acting pools on a constantly updated game). You can have the crappiest dubs/Voice work in the world but have the same VAs do another part and sound miraculous and perfectly fitting. Its all about how they are cast, how competant the script is, and how good the director is honestly and SE does a great job. So I am confident it will turn out great.

Since SE's main headquarters in the US is in California, we will probably get the Animaze group to do the Voice Work (A lot of the VAs also work for Bangzoom) ... its the traditional actor pool including Jonny Bosch, and the like from anime like Bleach and they also did Xenosaga series and Last Remnant. My opinion obviously, could very easily be the more british oriented VA group they used for FFXII and Dragon Quest VIII. I wouldn't mind that too :P

I think we can expect something similar to those lines, since that's another recent FF game. The differences may be with the people they choose (depending on how well the game does, how talented their VAs are), which could be a potential minus, but with the dialogue being made for the English version rather than adapted from the Japanese, that could be a potential plus (even though the writers are all going to be Japanese from the get-go).

We can only wait and see. I'm looking forward to it, whatever the case. I've never seen voice acting so bad that it makes me embarrassed to play the game. Usually a game will be embarrassing to play before the voice acting comes in. It's never really shifted my opinion.

Seriously, I see more than thousand positive reasons to let it be released with English Dubs only, as to have JP and Eng Dubs available.

First of all, all future Add Ons, including the actual FFXIV itself would be pushed back just because of voice over recording in both languages. That would mean unnecessary "work".

Second...nobody has something against English Dubs(I am German and I got no problem with that...)except for JP players, who just dislike english at all. JP should start to get more tolerant towards "non JP" players...

Third and only thing that speaks against Eng dubs only is...JP players of course...FFXI didn't have such a strong playerbase...they needed the JP players...I can see that again with FFXIV...many JPs not playing FFXIV because of Eng dubs only would hurt the playerbase overall...which would suck tremendously :/

As a german player I had no problem with JP players in FFXI, but still it started to annoy me when I couldn't mix JP/US groups just because of JPs being intolerant...

Seriously? I never had any problems playing with Japanese players. I always enjoyed getting into their parties and playing with them. Never have I had a moment where I thought they were being 'intolerant' to me for speaking English.

JP players dislike English? I've never encountered one who has. What reason would Japanese people have to dislike English? I used to think that a lot of Japanese people liked the English language.

How come so many Japanese bands use English words in their music? Heck, even some bands, like The Beat Crusaders, use English exclusively.

Since Japanese players are made of the Japanese population, then wouldn't a lot of Japanese people also dislike English? How come these bands are so popular then?

More Japanese people know English than English-native speakers know Japanese.

This could be the reason for English voice overs.

As like Finaa, JP players were never intolerant to me, and I would say they were even more tolerant towards me than some other ENG players,

When I returned to FFXI after a break I created a new character. I was a lvl 13 THF, no sub, and I got invited to a JP party, and when I looked at their other options there were a couple of lvl 13 WARs with a sub, so I was thankful for that. Its probably one of my favorite parties to this time as well. I conversed with the tank of the party for an hour or two through tells using only the semi-useless Auto-Translator.

First, it won't be optional since there will only be ONE Voice work and no japanese, so unless you mean optional as in mute, you won't get it. Secondly, the people that actually want a game to be voiced in a non-native language is in an extreme but very vocal minority. What they are doing is the right thing to do. I know more people that are actually turned off by a game because its in a language they don't understand, subtitles or no subtitles. I'm just happy to see that if they are going to have english voice overs, it will be the only one. Hopefully than "Dub" won't be used since it IS the native language for the games audio experience.

well if they do a good job, i'll be happy with it... if they do a bad job, i hope you can turn voice off... i would expect you can, at least on pc..

i also hope not EVERYTHING is voice acted... leave minor npcs to text, minor quests to text. i'de rather them concentrate on the important roles instead of trying to stretch everything out. hopefully this way it will be harder to notice the same voice actor on two different characters.

i would think they would make a mute option, it would lower system requirements on the pc if you could turn them off all togethers... regardless lots of games you can change the voice volume from 0 to max i wouldn't automatically assume we are not going to get that option.

I have no clue how the situation regarding JP players towards "non JP" players changed in the last 4 years, as I quit 2005 :)

But in those 3 years I played there were defintely more "English No,thanks" Comments in JP people LFG, than "everyone welcome"...

People got neglected on a regular basis in JP PTs when I played, just because they were not JP...I even started to learn some basic phrases to use in FFXI, to "ask for PT, or ask someone to join my PT etc" After that it went a whole lot smoother to find JP players for PTs, though some JPs left the PT right after they saw the Chat-Log and have seen that most were writing english only...

It is something traditional/political...although it might have changed game-wise over the last years, when I was playing most JP "kids" were still educated tradionally japanese...meaning JP culture is the best/highest and US doesn't have any culture at all and therefore must be hated. Not to mention the political history of US against Japan in Hiroshima and Nagasaki...Japan never got over that incident(which is kind of comprehensible)
I know that shouldn't be a topic anymore...but in the traditional education, this is what japanese people usually think of, when they think of america...which is the reason they dislike them...

At least thats my experience with JP players and speaking with JP players when I still played(not to mention like half of JP refuse to write english, because they think they are not good enough and don't want to be emberassed...)

Could have been a personal thing...but 5 years ago, pretty much all people complained about JP players being that way^^

I have no clue how the situation regarding JP players towards "non JP" players changed in the last 4 years, as I quit 2005 :)

I played from '03 to mid '04 and I never once saw a group looking for members that were "JP Only".

But I believe you that they existed, it just never happened to me.

But I can sort of understand where they are coming from; it is difficult to coordinate fighting if you don't know what everyone is saying.

Anyway, on the voice acting topic. This "English voices" thing has got me thinking that closed beta testing would definitely be available to non-Japanese players.

Personally, I would like to have every quest and NPC have voices. It worked well in Oblivion and I think it would be nice to see it here as well.

I think I just might have to ask Frank(the Voice God)Welker to audition for a role in FFXIV. If anyone is deserving of a role, it's Frank.

wonder if our Character will be a mute hacky sac this time around again...

would be nice to pick a voice and personality but that would mean they have to have more voice acting/writing for that personality type on how he reacts and NPC reactions.

so really sure the character will be a mute hacky sack again but i bet will see some multiple choice again but it will always end up the same...lol

With reason.

They should have gotten the guy that did this instead. Still one of my favourite One Piece AMVs.

But now I'm wondering how the opening movie of FFXIV will be... I liked FFXI's one. It was quite dramatic, and the tragedy portraited seeped through to the CoP NPC dialogues as well.

First of all let me get this strait it's only gonna be english? The japanese wont get get their own VA, thats a bit of a slap to the face... Also I'm stoked and I would appreciate it even if the VA was bad cuz im lazy and unimaginative I hate reading when there are cutscence or any movement going on screen cuz it distracts from eye candy, and if there are no sounds for voices. to me everyone just talks like sean connery :X and itsh not shekshy to lishen to women talk thish way

Yes there will be only one voice work done and its in English. The other language releases will get the english voice overs with subtitles. It makes sense though, its a nightmare enough to put out voice work for a constantly updated game much less 2 or more voice tracks. With a great deal of the potential MMORPG population being english as a native language or at least a secondary language its only natural they would pick english (**** I predicted this would be the way they would do it before they even CONFIRMED there would be voice overs.) Plus SE has been doing international games as english voice work a for a while and even released it in english in Japan yet they won't give the same courtesy to the NA crowd for Japanese language. I just hope people will be understanding this isn't a dub and learn to appreciate for how it is since there won't be anything to compare it to.
