Hi everyone. Just wanted to see what you all thought of the new race names for XIV. I already think atleast 2 will be abbreviated once the game comes out. Discuss. Sorry if this thread has already been created ><

I think Michael Jackson would be satisfied with what they did to the Taru race.

I'm going to keep saying Galka.

I'm probably going to keep using FFXI names >_>

I like the new names but really no more than I liked the old ones.

The names are new, even if the races don't look very different. I'm glad that it's something.
I think I would have been a little bit upset if they kept the same exact names.

It's a change, albeit a small one. That's a plus in my book.

I definitely won't be using the FFXI race names, but that would probably also be because I haven't played the game in a while.

Even if the names are different they still seem someone similar, don't you think?
Hyur --> Hume
Elezen --> Elvaan
Miqo'te --> Mithra
Lalafell --> Tarutaru (syllabic similarities)

The only one that's really different is Roegadyn and Galka. To be honest, it's the only one I don't really like. I'll probably abbreviate it as Roeg.
Miqo'te might be Miqo and Lalafell might be...no...I can't just call them "Lala"s.

I don't really like the names but that's probably just because I'm not used to them.

Probably going to turn into lawl.

Anyway, I don't particularly like the names as they are all rather foreign. The original names are all worded similarly to other words in our vocabulary (hume - human, Mithra - Mithril, Elvaan - Elves) or are otherwise fun to say (Tarutaru, Galka) but these new names are just twisted a bit too far or just way to strange to be familiar. I mean, I don't even know where to start in the pronunciation of most of them.

A good place to start is with the Japanese, since it's phonetic. All it takes is learning a single alphabet and then you'll be good for all Japanese "foreign" names.

Hyuran : Hue-ron
Elezen : Ele(as in 11)-zen
Lalafell: La-la-fell
Roegadyn: Ru-ga-deen
Miqo'te: Mi-coat

If that helps any. =P

As for whether or not I'll use the new names, I'm already adapting to them. When you start hearing the names in the voiced cutscenes, I think it'll become infinitely more natural.

Edit: Yeah, I like idiggory's phoneticizations for Hyuran and Roegadyn. I didn't even consider that people might pronounce "din" like "dinner".

I know I'm going to see a Lalafell named Taru or Tarutaru at least once in my FFXIV career.

Miqo'te --> Miq
Lalafell --> Lala

The others are easy enough already.

Hyuran : He-yoo-ran
Elezen : El-re/le-zen
Lalafell: Lala-fell (lalaferu in JP)
Roegadyn: Ro-ga-din
Miqo'te: Mi-ko-te (sounds middle eastern to me? I'm unsure of the etymology)

I love how SE uses mythology for pretty much everything in it's games... maat, behemoth, shiva, mithra, garuda, etc. However I'm unsure of these names.

Weren't the names of the races in FFXI different before the game went into Beta stage? It's was years ago and I don't remember exactly but I do think they were different. Maybe the names will change. With the exception of the Elezen I'm not feeling the names. And honestly why the **** can't Humans be Humans!!!!!

I actually prefer "Roegadyn" and "Miqote" (I won't be using the apostrophe). I shall call them... Roeg and Miqo.

Hyur will continue to be "Hume" for me, and Elezen will just be "Elf."

Lalafells will either continue to be "Taru" or perhaps "Loli." Hey, one of the girls was kind of cute. For a midget.

In any case, I have a feeling these race names will have a harder time sticking due to the former XI player base.

When I first checked out the Offical JP website, I misred the cursive as "Hyman".

That would have been one of the greatest ENGRISH blunders of all time.

Is it hi-yu-ran or hyu-ran?

I'm gonna go look...

Yeah, it isn't hi-yu-ran

It is hyu-ran.

You can pronounce it like the word for a color, "hue" and the name "ron."

[EDIT]

And that galka is closer to rugadeen than rugadin.
