Since adventuring will be less focused a group play when leveling up, does it make sense that there be more focus on NPC buddy instead? Just a question. Maybe NPC buddy wouldn't even be in consideration.

i think you are thinking too much in the confines of ffxi...

npc fellows were added in an attempt to make more of the game "soloable" after an already heavily party based system and world.

xiv will be a completely new game, if they design it to have more solo activities and options from the get go there would be no need for an npc fellow and therefore i don't think they will be considered.

but who knows... i personally tried to get into the npc fellow system and never had the dedication to put much time into it, but i know a lot of people really liked it.

I liked the NPC Fellow system, although I didn't get to use it "too" much since I left FFXI a few months after it released and only played sporadically after that. But I agree in that the Fellow system was added to help extend FFXI's playability and probably won't be a primary focus (if at all) in FFXIV. However, that's not to say it couldn't happen.

I think for the most part, grouping with live player characters will be encouraged over use of AI controlled NPC's such that the group environment is retained. It's tricky to balance solo & group content in that any weight to one side of the scale can dramatically affect the other side. Maybe something SE will analyze further on after release, after seeing how the population adapts to their new progression & class environment.

I'm a strong supporter of the FFXI NPC fellow system. I level all my subjobs by primarily duoing with my NPC. Levelling a mage sub, set it to stalwart shield and you've got a decent tank. Levelling a DD, set it to soothing healer and you've got a healing buddy. Levelling jobs like DNC, set it to fierce attacker and clean up on EP/DC's.

The AI still could use some work as the NPC tends to blow through MP too quickly wasting it on stupid spells. And it would be nice if FoV bonuses could be applied to the NPC. But otherwise its a really good system and I use it alot.

And one of the more fun fights is the NPC limit break at 65. Mano a mano against your NPC. SE should have had more solo BCNM's like that.

the npc adventure fellow was one of my favorite features in ffxi. I would love to see this brought into ffxiv, and i agree if they could add more control over the npc, ai, and settings, gear etc. That would be awesome.

I, too, am a huge fan of the NPC buddy system and would love to see it make some sort of return with more customizable features in FFXIV
