"Not fifteen years past, a new threat appeared without warning from the east. Metal-clad warriors brandishing weapons that spewed streams of fire, fleets of behemoth airships belching oily smoke...A resistance was amassed..."

This is an excerpt from the monologue of FFXIV on their official (English UK) site. It seems like the "beastmen" in this game will be humanoids of some sort. Maybe hyurans and other races we'll be using or new races, but from this description, this game seems to be more politically driven than its online predecessor and when they speak about invasions, i think civil, structured minded "people", not some shadows of old beasts. What do you guys think? In my opinion I think it would be awesome running into mobs that are humans or some of the other races in the game, but gone rogue or have different ideologies and beliefs and are fighting to take your land...it gives the game a nice twist, it makes it feel like you're fighting people "like you" to protect your land which is awesome.

"However, even in the waters nearby the city (Limsa Lominsa), pirate bands run rampant, reaving and pillaging...."

Another excerpt, this time from the Limsa Lominsa description, that leads me to believe that there will be NPC mobs based off of humanoid races such as the ones we choose to be. Here they are in the form of pirates off the coast of the city, maybe they ambush you when you're out at sea, or maybe they are part of quests in which you have to assemble parties to take them on and retrieve stolen goods or something like this.

Ok, maybe to stir a little conversation, i also posted this thread on gamespot PS3 forums for the game and i got an interesting reply from a member there, it went as follows..

"i agree. i think fighting against the same races that you play as would be really neat. i wonder if they will have the same capabilities as we will or if they will be super powerful beings with unique skills like the ark angels. it was cool running around the beastment strongholds in XI, you were always super alert of your surroundings in the high level areas.

hopefully they bring back besieged and another version of it where we attack their cities, i think it would be cool amassing a large group of players to assault a major city of our enemy, or if they couldintegrate a large scale battle into the story or some kind of endgame content. i can just imagine fighting through waves of citizens ready to die for their king / lord / whatever. then fighting the elite guardians at the gates to / inside the castle / stronghold and then making your way into the main chamber and fighting the king themself for some kind of leet gear."
~MyFkdUpFac3

I think this would make for an awesome mission quest, perhaps at a later time in the game when your level suits such a mission. Another idea he came up with was about the pirates and you forming alliances and going out to see and infiltrating a pirate ship to retreive something, justice, etc. And what about airship battles? (by battles at sea and battles at sky i don't mean you will pilot your own ship/airship, but rather on the deck of a large ship/airship preluded by a cutscene leading up to the events after certain conditions are met). A political setting can make for some interesting scenarios, can be a lot of fun.

People have been speculating that we'll be facing Hyur, Lalafell(yesss), Elzen and the others in addition to what may also include beastmen.

This may be old but is this talking about....flamethrowers? lol. I mean the game looks technologically advanced but if we got people running at us with flamethrowers, i don't think we can retaliate properly with sword and shiled...let alone a pickaxe in one hand and a needle in the other :S.

Magitek!!!

As to human or beastmen, I think it could be both. Humanoids seem to be a likely enemy, but who knows. I will say this though. I am pretty **** sure they wont forget to put goblins in FXIV.

There will definitely be beastmen in FFXIV, but I do hope that there would also be our own races' bad guys. It'd be even better if one of the main enemies are a group where own race (Hyur, Roegadyn, etc) work together with the beastmen, and give them deep background to properly explain why they're on the opposite side than us.

Orcs had flamethrowers in XI, they were just gigantic siege engine type things.

Well, yeah. That's kind of the definition of the term. The Orcs, Yagudo, Quadavs, Tonberries, Goblins, Demons and the rest were all "humanoids."

Even if these warriors aren't beastmen I think we'll still see beastmen type mobs...they just wont be the direct threat they were in FFXI.

Also, those pirates might not mobs we fight since they alluded to the fact that the pirates are secretly there with permission from the city government. It might be a norg type thing going on.

However, it is a running theme in a lot of FFs to fight an evil empire of humans bent on world domination so it is very possible they are going back to their roots.

I think it would be cool if our enemies were robots though. Robots might be too modern of a word though...more like mechanical beings brought to life by the magic of an evil emperor. I think it fits with what we've read so far.

I'm sure you understood what I was getting at as the rest of my post explained it, but thanks for your input. I meant as opposed to the ones in FFXI, we'll have races that looks human, glaka, taru, etc. fighting against us.

The intro does talk about "Death-mongering Beast tribes.. I'm pretty sure the new versions of beastmen will probably be "beastly" but I do hope for more varriety of inteligent enemies.

I would see a lot of potential in fighting human-like races as the "real" enemies, opposed to the beastmen in FFXI. Of course Lalafell, MI'Quote etc as well. The biggest potential would probably in the fact that you would "assume" they will be intelligent. Behind the beastmen War in FFXI there was always that "higher being" giving them orders like the Shadow Lord etc. But human-like enemies would also give the possibility of traitors, spies etc that could infiltrate the own kingdom and therefore a real big potential in the overall storyline with plot twisting, mindblasting, eyeexploding storylines :)

Non the less beastmen will be fine, just not as the "main" fraction of enemy...I would like something more "civilised" and "intelligent" as opposing force.

I would guess that at first the beast tribes and bandit/pirate groups will be our biggest enemies with either straglers or scouts from the Garlein empire showing up mostly in "endgame". Future expansions will probably focus on them though.

Again it's just a guess.

Magitek!!!

I am betting it's this. Tanaka already hinted at Magitek and in an interview they said they got inspiration from FFVI. My bet is that it's an Empire with Magitek Technology trying to take over the world. If you played many of the old FF titles, it's a theme they do quite often to some extent of another. I can bet FFXIV will have a similar theme.

Oh man, FFVI online, I can has. Definitely one of my favorite of the series. The characters, the world, they were done so well, especially considering what they had at the time. I would looove if XIV had the feel of VI.

"colossal monstrosities stalk the land"
"death-mongering beast tribes molested the land unchecked"

so there will be beastmens.

even in ff11 we had human-like enemies : fomors, mamets and shades, and for some missions/quests "notorious npc".

i don't really see why you want to have beastmens as "archenemies", we don't even know what the main story will be about. for what we know, it would as well be something about a "emptiness"-like foe or simply the wrath of the gods...

the "empire" isn't much different from aht urgan, they came, fought, then went... and we never heard of them since. being them destroyed by some other foes, the gods, or whatever. we'll probably go there in an add on, and find out that anyvay

the fact is that eorzea been kinda peacefull since that war. it allowed cities to works together and prevented a pvp game. but i doubt things will be as easy as "the empire strike back : 20 years latter"...

now, sure there'll be beastmens and humans-like on the "dark side", or at least to be fought during guildleves. it wouldn't be a ff withoout that.

if we look at the "intro", the "allied forces" use the weird looking airships-tube things that shoot on a dragon-like creature(unmounted), i don't see any beastmen there, ****, it even looks like the "allied" are the ones preparing some large offensive(on what ? i doubt we will conquer some city on another continent just for fun)

edit : spelling

Hmmm. This leaves some possibilities.

I might be dissapointed if this happened but they mentioned the clan of Elezan who are in contention with the Hyur's and still feel like they invaded the land. I just assuemd you would be able to play as a member of this clan (which I was super excited for because I love the prideful and douchey Elvaan from XI) but they might be an enemy clan.

Or there might just be clans of these each race that are at war.

Or we might just see a whole ton of fomors..

It would be cool if there was a faction knights that are what we call Anarchists that would be rebels against the main kingdoms that you'd have to fight. I could see a very interesting storyline coming along with that.

Oh, and barbarians that know no better would be cool; especially if they were Lullafells.

There was goodguy vs goodguy or humans and beastmen allying with one another in the history of FFXI, though not so much in gameplay

Tarutaru early on invaded the Elvaan and enslaved the eastern tribes.
Tarutaru rejected the Eastern human embassy, so they made diplomatic contact with the yagudo instead.

Elvaan allied with the Quadav to defeat the orcs. SandOria warred with Bastok and got their revenge on Windurst. etc. etc. etc.

Does FFXIV have the same writers as FFXI? I enjoyed the backstory, but it was often difficult to find or the time was 'better spent' killing crab and more crab
