Hopefully Square Enix doesn't impose the World Pass like they did during the first few years of FFXI.
I agree. The World Pass was a huge fail on behalf of SE. Many new players had a hard time trying to get the gil to purchase one, and there were a bunch of silly rules attached to it. I know that 1500 gil doesn't seem like that much, but it is still a useless hoop to jump through in order to get your friends to play with, who are already paying $12.95 RL money.
SE has stated they wanted prior FFXI players to feel comfortable in their transition to XIV, so having identical servers would make it a smooth one. Allowing people to freely
choose the world in which they wish to play would be excellent customer service.
If I remember correctly, when I first joined, I was forced into Ramuh. Had I the choice, I might have chosen one of my more favorite Summons, like Pheonix, Asura, or Bahamut. Perhaps, that's what SE wanted to avoid, in order to spread out the population evenly amongst the worlds.
