The FFXI server names were named after Traditional Final Fantasy Summons.
Do you guys think that FFXIV server names will follow the same traditional FF summon names?

I think that they should follow this style, since members of an old FFXI server (eg: Phoenix) can start in a similar named server in FFXIV and meet their friends.

Hopefully Square Enix doesn't impose the World Pass like they did during the first few years of FFXI.

What do you guys think?

I agree. The World Pass was a huge fail on behalf of SE. Many new players had a hard time trying to get the gil to purchase one, and there were a bunch of silly rules attached to it. I know that 1500 gil doesn't seem like that much, but it is still a useless hoop to jump through in order to get your friends to play with, who are already paying $12.95 RL money.
SE has stated they wanted prior FFXI players to feel comfortable in their transition to XIV, so having identical servers would make it a smooth one. Allowing people to freely choose the world in which they wish to play would be excellent customer service.
If I remember correctly, when I first joined, I was forced into Ramuh. Had I the choice, I might have chosen one of my more favorite Summons, like Pheonix, Asura, or Bahamut. Perhaps, that's what SE wanted to avoid, in order to spread out the population evenly amongst the worlds.

#3Zackary, Posted: Sep 14 2009 at 3:03 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I don't want them to name the servers after summons/iconic characters again, mostly because some of the servers had names that couldn't be pronounced. I had a character on Quezcotal for a while, and whenever I brought it up with people who played the game, they were like "lolwut" even though they were aware said server existed.

I hope that servers are named as the XI ones are (plus more, if required!) just to help communities make the transition if they are. I mean, I am a part of a few communities on Ifrit, and there members im sure are members of other communities... You can see where it goes, a web of contacts and people wanting to stay in touch! If there isnt a server named Ifrit to transfer to, I think alot of it will be broken away and I may loose friends that Id rather not.

I think that last point is going to be unavoidable, but like-for-like server names will make it alot more easier for deciding where to go!

I'mma going to pick the server Unicorn, cause I think the most annoying e-peenish guys would probably avoid that server.

I thought it was pretty obvious? It's a ***** to pronounce in casual, real-life conversation?

I liked the server names and I wouldn't mind if they kept them the same. I also wouldn't be heartbroken if they changed them either.

I thought it was neat to name them after summons and if they changed them I'm not quite sure what other names they could have. What other FF-related terms could they name the servers?

I don't remember what server I was first stuck with, but I do remember that I was on different servers from the two friends who asked me to play the game. I played the game at their request so imagine my surprise when I was thrown into a random server and couldn't even play with them!

So we worked on getting world passes to all meet in the same server and eventually it worked out, but at level 1 it was quite an ordeal and we had to play a while before we could do it.

Regardless of server names I hope that we're allowed to actually choose our server this time.

As long as the server names aren't like "Alpha", "Beta", "Gamma" then I'll probably be fine.

Other FF-related terms they could name them by would be the main characters of the FF series. Cloud, Yuna, Squall, Firion, Terra, Kefka, Sephiroth(I can't imagine how overcrowded this server would be), Tidus, Rinoa, etc.

Hopefully they'll stick to the summons though, unless they find something more creative.

we all know that the Bahamut server is likely to get packed. Although to meet up friends from the past. EpedemicOptiks. Hopefully I could see him as well as many other friends pop onto something similar. Its like a meeting point. Instead of just meeting new people, we should be able to get a chance to meet our old friends that we have lost contact with. And hopefully a similar server name can reunite us.

This. Who wouldn't want to play on Cecil, Vivi, or Terra servers?

But unfortunately, yeah, most likely either summons will rule the day or famous 'beast' types. Cactuar, Moogle, Chocobo, etc.

When I played browser games like Travian and Evony. I named my cities after Final Fantasy Summons. Made it unique in the game. It gave the cities a strong name, that didn't feel like it was named after a person, but an idea. Final fantasy summons are usually named after mythology. I grew fond of the name Anima, since it was my first city usually. i don't know it just seens fitting. Summon names are used repetitively in the final fantasy series, unlike character names(other than cid of course). It just seems fitting.
Its like a high school reunion. Every student you knew in High school meets up at the same school... Why not have a server reunion with the same name.

If they use character names, I bet Sephiroth and Cloud would be maxed with in minutes of launch. But I am for it, because only the fan boy retards would flock to those.

I would also guess that the Sephiroth server would be pack... with atleast a thousand players with variations of sephiroth in their name. I mean the main use of reuniting with friends is to have similar names as FFXI.

Now considering that FFXIV will have a MUCH broader spectrum in the console with a PS3 release. Maybe we will have more player. So SE can't have too many players in a few servers. Also their consideration of PvP servers, or PvP added on. Maybe new server could be character names. Although I have already made my personal choice to join in the Phoenix server. Just for hope that a FFXI friend of mine would think the same as I do and choose Phoenix in order to reconnect with their friends.
