Oh snap!

I'm certainly not bothered by this, as I will be playing on the PC anyway... but now I may have to upgrade earlier than expected.

There's actually quite a bit of other info in that article, but I assume Elmer will have a better translation ready eventually, so we can discuss there.

I suppose I am. I mean, I would have guessed it would initially be PC only. But it seems strange not to beta test it on the only console it's coming out on. Granted, it probably requires less testing than PC stuffs...

Either way, it's new news and we haven't been getting a lot of that recently.

Was discussed earlier this week here: http://www.zam.com/forum.html?game=268&mid=1254152295137452801&num=24&page=1

In that translation it said,

At the beginning, tests will only be conducted with the Windows version.

I can't read the original of course, but that sounds like it makes more sense. I find it unlikely that they would or could release a game of this scale with no major testing on one of the two platforms.

I think it's more likely that the earlier closed beta, which deals more with content and balance, will be PC only. But by the time of the open beta, they're going to have to have something operating on PS3 if only to work out the networking bugs.

It's easier to test/fix things on a PC. Once they get the big server issues and such worked out is probably when they'll bring it to the console.

Just about everything with a significant online component gets a console beta test these days. And yet somehow the online portion is still always a complete disaster at launch...

I imagine a PC based beta would be considerably easier to coordinate than an open beta for consoles, so I didn't find this very surprising.

The focus of the beta, after all, is to fix graphical errors, design flaws and other bugs that would be apparent in both versions of the game and can still be addressed with just a PC beta.

If a PS3 game works on 1 PS3, it works on all of them. Not the case for PCs. PCs have a lot more different hardware configurations, which would require more testing.

I imagine the biggest issue for a PS3 beta would be distribution. I don't know how it worked for FFXI with the 360 beta, but I'd have to assume FFXIV will be several orders of magnitude larger. Not to say they couldn't have a 10-20GB beta download on PSN, but assuming most PS3-owners would expect to buy this game in a retail box, a PS3 beta would probably be very limited in scope compared to the actual number of purchasers. Even worse, that's a large amount of hard drive space to fill up on your PS3, and while I'm sure the retail version will have a similarly large install, I imagine it has to cut back on size at least somewhat and stream stuff from the disc.

Everquest Online Adventure had a console beta as well as FFXI for the PS2 and 360. 360 distribution was through magazines as well as FFXI's PS2 beta in 2002. It's well known FFXIV will be built on PC then ported to consoles so it not only makes more sense that FFXIV's first beta will be PC only, but it's also a good way to collect data on what kind of users will be playing, for example the type of data they'll be looking at is:

  • Low end users (yes these people exist and will always exist, this game isn't crysis, they want EVERYONE to enjoy it.)
  • Mid range users
  • High end users

Then they'll make the final config tool to be set with those users in mind so even if you're a low end user you'll be able to enjoy FFXIV fully even with low settings. Aside stress testing that's pretty much why they'll hold a beta for the base platform, since chances are unless you bought a PS3 prior, not many upgraded to the PS3 due to the lack of full PS2 support. (Yes you coulda kept your PS2..but after 7? 8? years chances are it's dead or dying out.)
