I liked getting a PL 1-20, the jobs are so weak having an extra heal just helped. I would PL to lvl up my healing skill on my WHM. I always went to the dunes to do it and i never was told to stop healing. I believe that everyone in the game hated the dunes and liked a PL to get the heck out of their. As for learning your job, at 20 its easy, you knew if you were a tank, healer or dd and support.

i'd have to say no pl'ing at all, for one thing it lowers the achievment factor for those who didnt use one. in my case for ffxi when they had one i was happy to have one lol, but never acually went to the point of asking for myself when i made the parties, they usually just had one or was duel boxing. secondly i personally hated duel boxing, mostly cause im to cheap to pay for a second account and think it cheatin. basically with the leves and stuff i think any out of party healing should make it considered part of the party like someone mentioned thus taking all the exp away. that is my opinion, hopefully it isn't as bad as it was in ffxi where it made most people feel they needed to be one there. by the end of the game was a dependency towards them.

I believe it was mentioned already by a couple posts, just gonna 2nd/3rd or w/e the point: PL'ing is a huge no-no. Absolutely not. I was a part of FFXI from NA's Day 1; the Art of Renkei was lost by the time CoP released -- LONG before TP-burns made renkeis irrelevant -- why? Because too many Dunes newbies had their hands held being PLed. Honestly, I can't believe we have a PL thread already for a game that isn't even out of Alpha yet... so let me be the first to /sh:

Ah, those days huh? Maybe it was a server thing, or maybe you just happen to attract incredible players, but my experience is that people started to experiment with renkeis = mb somewhere in the jungle. They actually started to pay off there.

What PL did do was taking away the need to be inventive. A ws + mb combination could be crucial to the success of a party. Actually, every strategy more sophisticated than just hacking something to smithereens makes a battle more fun. The first job I leveled to lvl 75 was blm, and I am glad I did it in a time when MB's were quite important. You had to pay attention to TP reports because I believe there was no windower (at least I didn't use one back then), your timing had to be fine and you never really knew how much the impact on the mob's health bar would be.

Pl took away the real need to experiment and the entrance of high exp. TP burn parties nailed the coffin shut and sent exp. party fun where it came from.

What's left is the opportunity to level up fast. Blm took me almost nine month - could have become a mom during that period of time. Nowadays you can jump to lvl 75 in one and a half month without anyone raising an eyebrow. It's a whole other kind of fun.

I just have to see for myself in what way a PL can affect certain aspects of a game in order to have an opinion about this.

One nice thought though: when we all start out, nobody has a PL.

amen to that thought. main reason i love to start a game right when it starts off and not after. we are all bumbling around together and it's the best part of the game. tried to play wow like 4years+ after it came out and i left in 2months. i am very excited for this game to launch! :)

1) I was there from NA day one, and I don't think the reason for skillchaining dying out is due to PLing in the dunes. Might it have affected some people? Sure but I hardly doubt it's the soul reason.

2) As far as ppl shouting for a PL...I think in all my time of FFXI I only saw it a handful of times. It is easily ignored and no matter what, you will always have beggars in a MMO.

I always hated seein' PL's. I think it did make a whooooooooole lot of end-game tards. I used to just solo to 20+ with 90% of my jobs. Honestly it was probably twice as fast as partying in the dunes unless you had a great party which we all know is like winning the lottery unless you made it yourself full of veterans. You take in all the factors of dumbass players, people dying constantly cause they dunno what they're doing, and sitting there waiting around for a party in itself was lame.

I think Renkai died cause it was just easier to get 4 melee a rdm and a brd/cor. I mean we all know there was always DD's seeking. Lookin' for a specific set of jobs for a party was just too much of a hassle. Not to mention too many of the mobs brought in from ToAU had too many wacky magic defenses basically making skillchains obsolete. SE had to come up with party mobs that distributed high amounts of xp, but were the most annoying things in the world to fight at the same time cause it was........ funny?

I was never bothered by PLvling. Most the time if I was taking a low level job through the dunes one of my friends or someone in the LS who was bored would come and get me out of the dunes quickly. Which most of the time I would be stuck in a party with a white mage that didn't understand healing priority.

Then some nights if I was really bored and there wasn't many people on to go do something fun I would grab my whm and head out to the dunes or Yjungle to see if anyone needed some help. Which I would spend most of the time searching out people who were looking for a raise.

Now as for someone outside tanking I have a problem with. Whm was my first job to 75 and after starting my next job I ran into a number of players who couldn't keep up with healing well into the 30s.

I wouldn't mind if they put some restrictions to Plvling. Such as the person getting a small portion of exp for doing the majority of the healing. Maybe not until after level 18ish.

I was suddenly reminded of one time when someone in a party brought his friend in to PL us...I figured if he's going to be healing I might as well level my holy and banish some.

The PLer flipped out once he noticed I was casting banish. "Healers never cast banish" he said. My response was, "I'll stop when I start being the healer". The guy left a few minutes after that.

Power leveling is great. Not everyone enjoys the leveling process of MMOs. Some of us really like endgame or PvP. So if there is a way to speed up the leveling process without using a program to cheat, I don't see anything wrong with it at all.

To those of you who think because someone has a healer outside of their party helping them level faster that it makes them somehow gimp or unable to play their job, you're wrong.

That's silly.

If he's going to be doing your healing duties you can either do banish or use a club/staff in the dunes.

Have played both WoW and FFXI
And having been PLed in both games, I like WoW's if I had to pick what one I like (method).

I quit FFXI before the change to PLing, when I Played there was no EXP lost if someone(s) outside of the party healed anyone inside it.
Many a times when LS buddies were bored, and I was in parties...they would come and heal leaving the Party Healer to skill up skills he/she may not get to due to having to heal.

Some liked it, some would leave the party.

In WoW, it works different. If I tag a monster, it is mine..but if I get too much help I don't get the EXP I would.
that is where the Instance running comes in. Have a higher friend blast through (that vid was with a 63 pally [old vid], I can link ALL of that SM Cath on my 80DK) and aggro and kill. The EXP bar goes z-z-z-ooming towards the end.
But you can only run an instance so many times in an hour before you are locked out and have to wait.

PL to me is ok, it helps maybe get that friend who joined late in the game to your lvl so you can play together (why I help, or helped PL). Or help get past the hump of not being able to get to the next lvl(s).

To my knowledge PL'ing someone is still without a penalty, provided the PL'er doesn't do direct damage to the mob.

If SE wants to limit PL somehow I wont complain nor will I complain if they decided not to limit it. I don't much care either way. The only problem I see with PLing is players getting to level cap before they know how to play their class which is easily solved by a kick button.

That's sounds good and all but I regularly use my friends characters of classes I never leveled to 75 and it takes about 10 minutes to learn it, and maybe a couple hours to master it. I don't need to kill 999999 mobs to learn how to play a class.

If they allow PLing, the only thing that would stop me from PLing is a fun group exp system like FFXI (although I know many ppl hate it)

Just saying, you threatening to kick someone out of your LS for PLing b/c you think they will suck is laughable b/c amount of time spent mashing the same buttons over and over doesn't make you any better at playing your class.

I didn't get powerleveled, but I did have a pocket healer from 1-75 on Samurai, which I managed to turn into a tank in the mid 50s to upper 60s. Mostly through sheer damage output, it wasn't particularly intended, which is what made it even more difficult on him.

You can bet your *** that said healer eventually ended up being what I would consider the best healer on the server once he hit 75 and started getting into some gear. So no, exp parties don't HAVE to teach anything, but to say things can't be learned there is kind of turning a blind eye.

As for powerleveling, I don't care about it honestly. I did my fair share of it on BRD, I guess. Usually while watching TV. I can't think of too many times anyone returned the favor, but it's not that big of a deal.

The only time I would have a problem with PL is if the game has competitive PvP that actually won/lost things. Becuase FFXIV will not be that game I don't have a problem with people leveling faster than me. I don't really care what method people use to level as long as they're still friendly to those lower level than them.

In my experience PL can sometimes breed players that think of themselves as superior becuase they leveled faster, or have X number of jobs/classes maxed. Again, doesn't really matter to me as most games have a black list function and I don't have to listen to the ignorant if I don't want to.

Who cares if Guy A gets a PL and levels super fast. Unless everyone is doing it and you can't find a group to do it the old fashioned way it shouldn't matter.

PL is one way for people of differant levels to play with friends.

No. Level sync would bring 6 people of different levels together.

Powerleveling has a 6 person (or any person party 6 or below) being healed by an outside party. In levels 1 to about 30, the healer will take most of the damage and the other 6 ppl can be DD's, and usually someone WHM simply for barfira. Once past 30 though you usually have the PLer just be a buffer: Protect 4, haste and backup healer.

The PLing scenario would be like me having a party in the dunes. My friend in the linkshell is bored and asks what I'm doing. Upon finding out I'm leveling in the dunes he says he'll come PL me without me having to ask.

I know what powereleveling IS, but I would have figured level sync would have made those people previously powerleveling you more inclined to simply sync down to your level and group with you, so that they aren't just standing there gaining absolutely nothing.

Maybe people are a tad more selfless than I gave them credit for.

Power Leveling isn't really that big a problem. Crappy players will be crappy players whether they get to the level cap slowly or quickly. In fact, depending on just how arduous leveling is, I'd probably rather have the option to power level my third, fourth, fifth, etc jobs left open to me.

This.

LoTRO tried to stop people from PLing. Their method is this... 1) If someone not in the group heals or buffs a player that is in combat, that players exp is cut 1/2. 2) If someone hits a claimed mob that is in combat, the player with claim will get exp cut 1/2.

This fails so bad. It is not necessary as leveling is so fast anyway. New expan a couple days ago raised level cap from 60-65. People were hitting 65 the following day after release. What it did do was give jerks and griefers a legal tool to harass people. Now jerks can sit there and shoot 1 arrow into someone else's mob and kill that players exp by 1/2. When confronted on it, they say "I was just helping you."

And yet you can group with someone 30 levels above you, let them kill everything and still get decent exp for sitting there afk.

In WoW after Wrath launched the first player to 80 was helped by friends. He would tag each mob to claim them and his friends would kill as he ran on to next mob.

PLing is and always will be in mmo's that have character levels. If game has no character levels (only weapon/skill levels) it may be more difficult to PL.
