In FFXI, player affiliation to an organization (linkshell) can be seen by looking at the colored dot in front of their name.

But in FFXIV, I'd like to see a more visible type of marking. For instance, shields could carry the symbol of the guild, but it could also adorn special patches on pieces of armor or ornamental equipment such as signet rings, tattoos or capes.

To limit extensive disk usage with myriads of different emblems, each coat-of-arms would consist of a few layered icons. Each layer could be given their own color to enhance uniqueness.
Examples:
* 2x2 checkerboard (red&blue) background with crossed sword&staff
* two-tone bullseye circles with an icon representing one of the city-states
* roaring lion on a field of green

Since SE would have full control of the generation of these emblems, they could be developed and scaled to fit any piece of armor or weapon without degrading quality.

A bit of heraldry would be nice! Im looking forward to what the Linkshell equivelent system will hold (they do say, please look forward to it!) and am hoping it takes on board the direction Warhammer Online began to take a guild system, and develop it further!

Guild Halls, trophies, heraldry, perks and all kinds of fluff is what people are hankering for :>

If they really wanted to be awesome, Id love to see an in-game message board accessable by all members of the linkshell AND have it linked to an external webby, so members can read/post on it whether they are online in-game or simply at work/school/pub!

Coat-of-arms type things for gear would be pretty cool. Personally I wouldn't miss seeing little symbols floating around next to people's names though. Actually I might like it if we could just change the visual appearance of our names. i.e., our names would be layered over a guild pattern. So if the guild pattern is a blue bar on top of a brown bar, your name appears with the top half in blue and the bottom in brown. Meh, just a thought.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

That's some great Idea, but i think just more colorways to the link pearl will be just as good in my opinion... for example, you can choose black and red, white and blue, or even pink, purple and yellow for the color of ur linkshell, to give each linkshell their uniqueness.

I think it would be great to give us access to a room like moghouse, where only ppl equipped w/ the linkpearl could access the room. and then we could chat there.
it will be great for every linkshells to have a main hang out place, instead of linkshells gathers together to lag everyone in town.

I think they've already said we won't see "linkshells" again, but we can expect something similar.

I'm not a big advocate of the "guild leveling" system, as I think it's personally a load of fluff that could be spend better other more important aspects of the game.

One system I'd love to see is something like the Halo Series symbol customizer. Maybe our character could wear the symbol on a specific part of their armor, shoulder, arms, chest come to mind, and it could appear where the current linkpearls do as well.

I thought the linkshell system was very well done. A simple colored dot next to a player's name gave you all the information you needed (a /check to confirm this info). It was very efficient, easy to read, and didn't clutter the display with useless colors.

This. The old linkshell system was excellent. The only gripe I might have had with it is that the pearls took up inventory space.

Urgh, that would be horrible. It would strain your eyes just to read somebody's name against different colored backgrounds.

While I like the OP's idea, I don't think you should be forced to conform to your guild/pearl's patterns automatically. If other MMOs with customizable guild patterns have taught me anything, it's that guild leaders will always pick the worst colors ever.

I think a good reference point would be the Halo 2 emblems.

This. The only thing I would add to this is put the emblem over the Link Shell color
