The problem with jumping is the vast differences in heights of the races. nobody can jump higher than their head, most not higher than their waist, so how would you account for terrain that a elvaan could jump over, but a tarutaru could not? Also nobody can jump as high wearing platemail as they can naked. This would "ruin the immersion" as you all like to claim so much.

in ffxi the tarutaru ran just as fast as the elvaan and mithra, why not have the lalafell jump as tall as the rest of the races and just put it off to small but powerful legs? vise-versa, jumping would be more immersion than no jumping, or mostly flattened maps

as for the armor, they could just implement a system that makes it harder to move because of weight, like a plate of mail would make your jumps shorter, and your walking slow, swimming more difficult, etc

fallout 3, off the top of my head, does this, depending on what you're wearing/carring affects your movement, and if you have certain things equipped you can't jump

That's alot harder than it sounds.
It's really not, how many other games have you played with FFXI's level of getting stuck on things you shouldn't?

if they has swimming in ffx, and jumping (climbing? it's been awhile) in ffx-2, why not implement them into ffxiv?
I want to point out how poorly they were implemented in these games. If people are concerned about SE ******* up stairs, how bad do you think the platforming they would almost certainly eventually add would to be?
I don't believe in good guys versus bad guys anymore… I only see a plethora of states acting in self interest… with varying ethics and moral standards of course, but self-interest nonetheless

You were saying to make a game with terrain that didn't create problems to begin with. That is worlds apart from ironing out XI's snags to get it to an acceptable level.

MMOs don't typically include platforming elements, but readily include the ability to jump. Why would including a jump inevitably involve the creation of platforming elements in this particular case?

I wouldn't mind an auto hop/jump action when you come to a road block. Instead of pushing a button your character automatically does the required action for that obstacle. See Ocarina of Time.

Those where not Gameplay footage, they were videos of people that had NO idea what they were doing or playing. They ran around in circles and kept trying to climb a mountain. It was painful to watch.

yeah, i think only having the jump action available when encountering certain obstacles isn't so bad, and i think it's probably the only way to compromise between pro-jumping players and anti-jumping players..sure jumping around for no reason could be fun sometimes, but it is, afterall, for no reason...nonetheless, jumping or no jumping isn't gonna stop me from playing'd be other gameplay issues that would stop me from playing FFXIV and sticking to FFXI...
