We all know by now that FF games are rife with references to other FF games. In fact most of the time you can find pretty extensive lists including monsters, items, and NPCs which bear semblance to those from previous games.

The question is, in this new FF, what kind of references will there be? In FFXI I felt that there were some references, particularly with weapons, and a few monsters, but unless you were really keen on your FF history you were kind of left out (most people didn't notice the Shikaree Sisters as the Magus Sisters at first).

What could be said is the races in FFXIV are perhaps even a overt reference to FFXI in itself, but beyond that, what does everyone else think the key references will be? I for one will be disappointed if I don't see a multi-armed Gilgamesh in XIV, or perhaps some obscure reference to the Warring Triad from VI.

So then, if XIV could have a reference to a previous FF, what would you want it to be and why?

There's already a couple already which could be referential. (or coincidence)

Garlean Empire - Garland (I & IX)
Ala Mihgo - Nanaa Mhigo (XI)

I wholly believe there should be a Lalafell NPC with a speach impediment that causes him to talk in Tarutaru speak.

You know they're going to rename and return Shantotto.

Shantotto wouldn't let herself be renamed, she'd just barge in there and pretend she was in the game all along.

FFXI is eXtreeeeeme.

World of Warcraft was like "SLOOOOW DOOOOWN" and FF was like "F*CK YOU!" and kicked them in the face with their PANDEMONIUM LEGS

SE really needs to make Shantotto the next Cid for their MMO games. I love to see Shantotto from FFXI's parallel universe trying to cause drama within the lalafells community.

Ribbons, Genji gloves, and economizers from FFVI. Because of what they do, they'd be among the hardest items to find, and would probably be the FFXI equivalent of rare/ex. I'll explain for people who may not have previously played Final Fantasy console games.

Ribbons protect against ALL negative status effects. This would include things like blind, slow, and paralyze.

Genji gloves allow a weapon to be held in the off hand, where a shield would normally be. It's the same thing as having Dual Wield. Of course, if any jobs get Dual Wield natively in FFXIV, this would be pointless for them.

Economizers reduce MP cost of all spells to 1.
