Death Bouts: New Mini Game?Follow

Cesti are comprised of reinforced metal rings bound tightly together with tough leather, the frontal facades of which are studded with menacing spiked protuberances. They began to see widespread use after becoming the weapon of choice in Eorzea’s wildly popular death bouts, spectator events pitting pugilists against beasts and fiends of the land.

So, is it possible we might see "death bouts" as a mini game?

Discuss.

That minigame sounds an awful lot like most MMO's actual game.

I'm leaning in the direction of Flavor Text.

Well, it could be similar to those ring of blood type quests in WoW. Or burning circle type stuff.

For one specific class? ;p

I saw at least three separate references on there.

-Himantes: "a regulation weapon in the officially sanctioned pugilist bouts of Ul'dah."
-Cesti: as quoted in the OP.
-Gladius: "continues to be used in gladiatorial games of the present day."

I'd say there's more to this than just flavor text.

I see your point.

Also, "Gladiatorial" was a very odd adjective choice. I wonder if they really meant to draw a parallel to the class itself or if that just slipped under the translation radar.

It's possible that it's a mini-game type thing, but cesti were weapons used by Roman gladiators which makes it just as possible that it's not more than flavor text to polish the history of the weapon type.

Anything's possible, but plausable?
Maybe, but don't get your hopes up.
If it's like Oblivion's pit fights, that'd be cool.

At first I thought maybe it would be like that game they have in Aht Urgan except it would be you vs the monster, not monster vs monster.
But now I'm wondering if it won't be a type of Guild Leve.

Here's looking forward to an honest-to-god player controlled, PVP colosseum with betting/rewards.

I'm betting it's going to start off a mini-game and after much whining from people to have PvP it will turn into a PvP style mini-game. They said they took ideas from FFVI like Magitek and they did have a Colosseum in FFVI.You had to fight Shadow there to get him back on the team. It would be cool!! I would love to see Ballista as a mini-game LOL!!!

I wouldn't be looking at this as any indication of any sort of serious PvP. The devs have already said that PvP will be, at best, a tangential component of the game.

And frankly, given SE's track record with class balancing, I wouldn't want them going too crazy with the PvP shenanigans. MMO developers that base a huge part of their games around PvP have a hard enough time balancing things...an MMO developer that considers PvP to be a token afterthought is not going to be very good at keeping things balanced.

I can see it 3 ways:

1. Flavor text. Most likely.

2. Hint at a PvP event. Maybe similar to WoW's arena, minus the ratings, major gear rewards, and pillar humping.

3. A man vs beast coliseum. I'd loooooove this. They could do solo, 3 player, or 6+. Would be an awesome way to test your skills, maybe even get a reward of some sort.

If it's not flavor it's probably this. Pretty sure it's not Pvp.

I'm hoping it will be similar to the battle arena in FFVII. I'd want to be able to take groups though.

Rolling for buffs/debuffs after each wave and maybe an optional roll at the end to either multiply earnings or lose some/all earnings.

Reward for winning could be points to exchange for items, skill ups, money, items, or tickets to be spent in another area.

I hope I can find a ribbon.

They expressed concern a couple of times about not wanting to do this b/c players would just create "fixed" fights for money.

I'd call this one the most likely. The description actually says "spectator events pitting pugilists against beasts and fiends of the land." They've said they'll probably include some sort of controlled PvP elements in the game, so this also seems like a plausible place to put those (if only in a later update).

I wonder if it will really be a "spectator event" as that description says. That would make things really interesting.

Maybe this means we'll get that last door in Whitegate. As in another attempt from SE to trial XIV content on XI first.

It's quite a brilliant idea, imo. I wish they'd do it more.
