Customizable equipmentFollow

I just heard about this today:

I've been really happy to see SE embracing customizable equipment in FFXI over the past year, and I think it bodes well for the same thing in XIV. Updates have grown so few and far between that that details have faded from my head, but I think there have been a few hints about a feature like this -- for instance, attaching "up to two blades" to a lantern shield as revealed this week.

I'm looking forward to seeing how far they could go with an equipment customization system built in from day one as opposed to added years later. This seems like a good way to add depth and purpose to the expanded crafting classes, too.

I honestly hope they don't put this system into IV. I have to say I hate the whole Augment system they put into place, because of how random it is, and how unproportionate the effort:reward is compared to the rest of the game.

I'm not 100% how the system in your link works because I don't play anymore. However, I'm assuming you get a base weapon and put up to three stats you want into it. This just seems like a drawn out process to me of making the weapon with the stats everyone will narrow down to eventually, instead of just putting that finished weapon into the game.

I'm not sure I understand the whole point of customizing equiment anyway. There are so many gear choices available for you to pick from depending on the sistuation already.

ok, it does look like a farly basic item inhancement type system, random abilities on the stones would make it a little more interesting.. but I hope that "IF" they bring something akin to this into XIV I would hope that crafted gear plays a part in it and perhaps that the crafters have some control over thier end of it.

Example, Tim the apprentice smith can pound out a steel longsword and has a chance that it will have one open spot, or he can set it to try specificly for a sword with that one opening at reduced chance to make overall, blah blah, system balances, blah blah..
Enrique the master smith on the otherhand has been asked to make a sword with four openings, perhaps he can make one outright for a penalty to the success rate or perhaps the system will let him make one with three. Once he has his three slotted sword he has the option to try to reforge the blade pulling down the acuracy or damage slightly to add a fourth slot.

Just an example off the top of my head, and adding to it with the thought that if they keep the "stones" random then it would be nice to see some crafter getting to manipulate them as well so we could lessen some undesirable effects and add minor new ones or just enhance the good ones.
