Well, I didn't see the News on any Site, so I thought I might as well post it here ;)

Interview with Yoichi Wada on MCV.

I highlighted the "important" part with big letters ;)

Quote:
Yoichi Wada says trade must prepare for switch to digital distribution and server-based games

Square Enix chief Yoichi Wada is preparing his firm for the demise of physical media – and potentially the death of home consoles.

In an exclusive interview with MCV that will be published next week, the CEO of the publisher – which now owns Eidos and is famous for its epic disc-based Final Fantasy games – said that a dramatic change will come in the next decade offering more opportunity for market growth, but fundamentally transforming the traditional industry.

“In ten years’ time a lot of what we call ‘console games’ won’t exist,” he said.

Wada warned that “all the distributors and sales firms will suffer a big negative impact” from a new era in which interactive entertainment switches from software run on hardware in the home to server-based offerings, game streaming and digital distribution.

He claimed that format-holders including Sony and Microsoft are already prepared for the shift – and that third-parties must follow suit.

“Somewhere around 2005 the console manufacturers’ strategy shifted,” he said.

“In the past the platform was hardware, but it has switched to the network. A time will come when the hardware isn’t even needed anymore.

“With that, any kind of terminal becomes a potential platform on which games can be played – that’s exponential growth in the potential of gaming. The potential size of the market is enormous.”

He explained that Square Enix is preparing for this change by ramping up production of social and browser games at its Japanese studios, and also closely monitoring 2010’s beta roll-out of PS3 MMO Final Fantasy XIV.

“Social and browser games are going to grow dramatically – especially in areas like Asia which does not have as big a console market,” he said.

yeah, it's suposed to be released in 2010 so there has to be a beta at soime point. What I do find at odds with the thread title is that it doesn't say the beta will be anything we haven't already heard about.
This could be a casual mention of the focus group they told us about along time ago or the PC beta I remember being mentioned to happen after the focus group.. While it does mention the game is for the PS3 they didn't say that the beta they have planned is for that version of the game.

I will submit to the idea that there will need to be a PS3 Beta but this artical is too cloudy with the wording to be able to say for sure what beta they are talking about either way.

But still the rest of the artical is interesting. Given some of the other up and coming gameing toys I've seen it will be interesting to see how all this plays oput and what tool formats they expect to go somewhere.

So far it's all been speculation about when the Beta would happen. At least this comes from the horses mouth. Nice find OP.

I agree with Likibiki , We might be looking at the official statement for the Beta. It also looks like it won't jes be a PC Beta!

Sure, they narrowed it down to just 365 days. More like a jackass's mouth than a horse's.

Correct. Which is the news. Everyone thought it was just going to be a focus group for PS3 and Beta would be for PC. So, there lies the news.

I'm not getting too excited about this, and I'll be a naysayer, but that article did not directly quote Wada when referring to mention of the beta. It was a paraphrased sentence that the author of the article wrote, and not a direct quotation. It's the author's interpretation of what Wada said, and until I see a direct quote, I'm not running to the bank with it. If anyone has a transcript of the interview, that would be much better verification.

With most games I would agree with the above posters, that I would expect a year or two delay from the initial launch estimate, but with this one, it appears that its very far along in the development cycle, beta testing may start soon, and i have a feeling that even if they aren't 100% done they'll release it to get the money train rolling and finish the game as they rake in the dough. With a game like this, each month they wait to release is money down the drain.

SE has been working on this game for like 4 years already. While managing FFXI they were elbows deep in making FFXIV, so the beta should be rolling right around the corner. And I agree with Serielley. Transcript please, before I get the jitters.

SE is claiming that 2010 will be the launch of FFXIV. Now if that's even possible, FFXIII is coming out in March, and the Beta for XIV should be announced by May(E3). Considering normal Beta testing and the increased staff on XIV, I'd say NOV~DEC is when to expect FFXIV in 2010'. This is just my prediction based on how SE usually announces stuff. If the Beta isn't officially announced by May, FFXIV won't be out in 2010.

They want a longer beta than usual so it's going to be longer than 6 months. If it's not started by May, the game won't be out in 2010.

2010 we knew.

I didn't expect a PS3 beta though. At least a non-closed in house ps3 beta.

That's good news.

We're interrupting this broadcast to tell you that the upcoming MMO FFXIV will have the same races seen in any other MMO so far; humans and elves, a small race and a big race as well as a humanoid race. However, since SE must create new races for every game they develop (unlike other developers who get away without consequences), this is an outrage. We will report to you live about the riots that are taking place right now all over the world because of this as soon as possible.

All I'll say is goodluck. Companies have been begging for these ideas since the early 90s but it'll never come to be because the world just isn't rich enough to support an online only entertainment system and won't be for another 100 years+. Could work in small countries like Japan for time being, I suppose.

This would be nice, I wonder if access to NM's would be available and that would be nice to transfer to the final game.
