One thing I've been thinking about recently is how people spent years on FFXI just to switch to a different game and completely start over? It seems like that would hold back some of the community from switching over. So does anyone know if SE is going to improvise some kind of system to coincide with what people have done in the first game? That's the one thing that would seem to disrupt FFXIV from gaining players that are really into the FF MMOs. Anyone have any opinions on this? -- Sorry if there are other posts like this.

like the idea, but doubt SE would give anything up. Even something as small as a badge or a special item that only ffxi players could get.

You have a point. SE does seem to be doing some things in FFXIV to help smoothly transfer the FFXI community to FFXIV. One example is the obvious similarities between the races of FFXI and FFXIV. Also, SE has mentioned having a feature where players keep their character's from XI's name and appearance in XIV. However, as far as transferring equipment or job levels from XI to XIV, SE has stated that they don't plan on having anything like that. =[

Personally, I believe a lot of the FFXI community are looking for something that will be a mixture of old and new; and these additions to XIV are simply icing on the cake. That being said, maybe starting from scratch will be somewhat refreshing for a lot of players. :]

The battle system, leveling system, and class systems in XIV are shaping up to be very different from XI's.
Even if you could transfer progress from one game to another, it would end up so distorted there's no guarantee you'd like the results. For instance, a player who plays Dragoon because they love the dragon pet might find the Lancer class disappointing because it doesn't have any pets.

Your proud of your accomplishments, there's no sin in that.
But really, the value of them isn't anywhere in those 1's and 0's your hoping to transfer.

You mean aside from the fact that FFXI is dated and dying dead?

If SE wants to throw FFXI players a bone and give them a benign furnishing some other such little vanity item that identifies them as a former FFXI player, sure. No harm in that. Beyond that, I'm not really sure what you could really want. I mean, SE would be pretty silly to scan their FFXI player database and start shipping over little Fafhogg trophies or mannequins with FFXI gear your character earned on it so you could sit around and stare at it for hours and pine over the good ol' days instead of actually playing the new game. And of course, I know you wouldn't be so ludicrous as to even propose the idea that your time in FFXI should entitle you to something in FFXIV that actually gives you any sort of significant edge in combat or professions over people who didn't play FFXI (or played but left years ago).

I played FFXI. A lot of the stuff on my character had meaning because of the gargantuan ordeal involved in getting it, not because I had any particular affinity for it. FFXI was also my first MMO and leaving that game was my first stark reminder that yes, all of this stuff is pretty meaningless at the end of the day because one way or another, someday it's going to be gone. Whether it's because you find a new game, the current game just dies off, or your life changes and MMOs no longer fit, sooner or later it's going to be time to say goodbye.

You, my good sir, have just summed up how I feel about so many things.

I am utterly speechless.

I will be very happy if they simply give us something to show we were FFXI veterans. And I mean something that shows you played FFXI for years, not two months. Maybe like how you have the Gold, Silver and Bronze belts in FFXI. Something like that which showed how many years of playtime you had in FFXI. It doesn't have to be super useful, maybe just something like a pretty cape? That would make me elated. Just something that said "Hey, this person played the last one for X many years!"

I understand that giving FFXI veterans something that would give them an edge would be unfair. I'm saying that maybe something like a title or anything like that(If there will be titles). Another issue is that the new FFXIV players may start complaining about what we get and this could cause an issue. I like the whole character look and name deal though. That sounds like enough for most people, but there's still those people that are thinking, "I spent all this time on this game just to switch to a new one?". Yes, MMOs are a waste of time, but it COULD be shown as time spent rather than completely starting over. I'm not in this group though. I'm fine with starting over.
What I'm mainly concerned about is the FFXI community not switching over based completely on this issue. Now, I could be completely wrong and in fact I hope I am completely wrong. This is mainly just a what if post. Hopefully people don't see it as just throwing time spent away.

While a trinket from FFXI wouldn't be functionally bad, it does signal that SE is pursuing bad game design philosophy. It says they're a little more interest in marketing and a little less interested in making a good game. It says they're a little more interested in clinging to their old user base and not as interested in looking forward. A key aspect of most any game is equal starting grounds, everyone is the same when they begin. Tossing out the idea that players should be equal is an open door to all sorts of problems.

When games have trivial problems that are equally trivial to fix or avoid, it says the development team doesn't understand what they are doing.

If people feel like they just wasted time now that FFXI is going out the door, then I don't suspect that some cosmetic thing like a cape, ring, or title will do a whole lot to change that :P

But I wouldn't fret about it too much. Anyone who's played an MMO ought to realize that the lasting merit of it comes from the good experiences, and maybe the friendships shared, not from the items gained. I think most people will transition to FFXIV with that in mind.

I played FFXI off and on for over 7yrs, was a great game lots of fun. I don't expect anything in FFXIV for my time in XI. That would be rediculous, it's a completely different game. Coming from a person that couldn't play the game 6+ months at a time due to being deployed to Iraq or currently being stationed in Korea and I can't play FFXI over here cause these hookers like to exploit gil selling like crazy so the whole country was banned hahaha..... I'm looking forward to starting over again with everyone else. I'll be on par with all my friends again.

Being way from the game so many times for months on end isolated me from them, I'd come back and see that they finished CoP without me, got all the cool gear from Nyzul without me, been there and done that in Sky without me.... This way I'll be able to play with all my old friends from FFXI experiencing things for the first time with them instead of having to ask for help which I hate....

To expect anything for your time in FFXI is kinda dumb, just reading the announcements about FFXIV makes it seem like they fixed almost every single problem with FFXI in the first place. Solo play in itself will have about 90% of the people in FFXI running over to FFXIV just because they are sick of waiting around all day for a party. Not to mention the allure of an entirely new MMO that has the Final Fantasy name on it will almost automatically ensure people from FFXI jumping over to at least try FFXIV. So I wouldn't be worried at all about FFXIV gaining players, I will almost garuntee that within the couple of months it comes out it will surpass even lolwow in the amount of registered players.

I'm fully expecting FFXIV to have throwback items, flashback nuances, and subtle/not-so-subtle homages to FFXI to remind us of our time spent in Vana'diel. I'd rather have FFXIV invoke good memories of FFXI instead of some trinket that tells everyone "I played FFXI and you didn't." Just like each game has particular series staples that make fans smile without alienating newcomers, I expect a similar relationship between FFXI and FFXIV. That's good enough for me.

The only type of anything that should transfer is some type of mog house type item that is purely for looks. This is coming from someone who has 5 years on the game.
