I think once FFXIV comes out, so many people will ditch FFXI that it'll be a **** ghost town. Probably be like 10 people shouting in Whitegate for a party at completely different lvls hahaha. Friggen Fafhog will be up for a month straight LMAO! That would be pretty funny, but in reality people would be foolish not to take avantage of all the (hopefully) bot-free HMM's out there and get some well earned gear for a change! :)

Although I'm going to feel sorry for the people who either
A: Can't afford the new game or
B: Are still too attached to FFXI to let it go....
C: Not to mention the fact the catastrophic decline in population will make it almost impossible to get anything done :(

Well SE stated they would keep the game running for as long as there is a large enough population playing the game to justify it's continued existence. I will have to assume they will start merging servers as needed until there are just to few people playing to continue running the game.

There will be a core to FFXI that will keep it around for a while. The original EQ is still running.

Yeah, Everquest 1 is still running with a decent population and Everquest 2 has been out for a while.

FFXI isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Many people will come to 14 to check it out. Many will play both. Some will leave XI for 14. I will be playing 14, but my XI taru will still be there. I'll probably check in from time to time(assuming i can get this CC crap straightened out) just to see what's going on.

Have no fear, FFXI will live on for quite some time. There's still too much to do.

If the server populations decline enough, SE will probably start merging servers.

People said the same thing about EverQuest when EQ2 came out. Didn't happen.

The truth is, FFXI has been in a steady decline for a few years now anyway. Don't get me wrong, the game isn't dying; Its merely showing its age. People have done what they wanted to do and moved on. FF14 won't kill FFXI. FFXI is going the way of most games that have been around for as long as it has.

We still don't know what the monthly fees are, too.
If they're more than FFXI, I don't think I'll switch.

If they keep the $1/extra character slot fee, then I know I shan't be making the switch... **** I haven't re-activated FFXI since Oct '08 because of the damned mule-tax. Miss the game big-time but I will not be swindled any longer.

I disagree with this poster. FFXI despite all its recent solo friendly content still requires quite a group of people needed for events. If you look very closely, SE is putting FFXI on auto pilot. FoV, Augments, Maze mongers, Synergy, etc. Nobody can seriously say that FFXIII and FFXIV haven't taken manpower away from FFXI. SE realizes FFXI is dying and SE's milking it for all it's worth. The paying for in game items and those terrible mini expansions was the beginning of the end. Talk about low quality and just cashing in on our player base.

I like FFXI for what it's worth, but I refuse to live in the clouds. Once FFXIV goes live, servers will begin to merge and many linkshells will break as a result. That is going to happen regardless of what people say. Sure FFXI will live on in spirit, but it won't be the same game we all remember. If I have to move servers, those people won't be my friends from the last 6 years. So depending on your perspective, FFXI will be dead. A MMO on life support like Everquest doesn't appeal to me. The merging of servers will **** off a lot of people. Eventually FFXIV will require more resources for its expanding player base and that means FFXI diminishing numbers will only put us further on the back burner for SE.

I won't speak for everyone, but I'm not interested in holding onto my character so badly I refuse to acknowledge the game is dead for all intensive purposes. The only way for FFXI to survive is if FFXIV bombed horribly with their new players. I don't believe that is likely so I'm prepared to leave Vanadiel. I'm sure most people will play both games until the grind becomes too much and more of their friends quit FFXI.
