It wasn't talked about very much.. A number of websites got beta keys that they could distribute, so it was possible to sign up in multiple places at once.. which I did haha..

There were beta players. My old linkshell owner was part of the beta and they use to even play alongside with the GMs.

Ahh man... Yeah I definitely remember those! Do you know what was happening in the first one? Cause it totally looks like an event they had in the US beta. They spawned a monster with an incredible amount of HP out side of each starting city, then told everyone to attack it. (They allowed everyone to engage it) The purpose was to stress test the server. I think they got some good data because the beta server crashed at least twice...

Can you upload pics onto this forum? or can you only link to them...? I'll look into that and post some pics up later.

edit: haha yeah, I've got a few pics of the GM characters

I remember exploring all avenues of Bastok as a pudgy little Taru for the first time, I was AMAZED.

Probably quite a few old FFXI Beta players are around, even if they're not actively playing atm.

I'm a little surprised people tried to sell their old discs (I still have mine, sitting next to my copy of FF+ROZ.) Really wasn't much to look at, just a white box with the logo on the front, nothing like the box art they have now.

The funny part was, I swore I wasn't going to waste the money on the retail version, but got dragged in by friends.

Looks like I'm in for another round of that with XIV, lol.

A lot of the original Cactuar beta testers ended up on Midgardsormr server - many into the PhoenixDown linkshell. I know there are a fair few who do still play, but lots have moved on now the game's got much older.

There was no chance for EUs to beta test so nope I never did.

I cannot remember all the details, but I was working at a LAN center during the FFXI beta in 2002. We were part of igames.org and they had a partnership with SE to get the beta to different LAN centers.

I think we started off with 10 keys and could request more. Everyone had to fill out the NDA and no one under the age of 18 could participate, which ticked off a number of our gamers lol. We could only install the game on our systems, but as far as I recall there was not a system in place that could tell if it was installed outside of the LAN shop. Since it was the first time a majority of us participated in a beta, we took the NDA very seriously. All the forms along with a picture of their drivers license was faxed back to SE. Everyone filled out a bug report sheet everyone week and we would e-mail it to igames.org.

We kept all the software locked in a filing cabinet in the server room, and only the owner had access to the cabinet. We even stopped one account due to the tester allowing someone under the age of 18 to play the game for him. Overall the experience was nice. It boosted business for us as testers were playing from open to close. We hosted over night events and pushed hard to have the gamers party up with each and explore and test everything they could find.

It was my first MMO so it was especially memorable for me. I remember the Gigantoad event. A HUGE toad was spawned outside of the 3 capital cities. I used to have a video of it up at FFXIonline, but I lost the file when my website expired. I remember going into the LAN center early to get the systems up and going for the event. I think it was before 10 AM. When I went back at around 5 PM they were still fighting the toad. It was around 11 PM that night that the toad was finally killed. This was in Bastok. IIRC the other 2 were killed either later that night or the next morning.

I have tested a couple more betas since then and can say that most of those games probably would have been better off if they had a more controlled beta test. Most of the time now it seems that beta testers just see it as a way to get info about the game out early to game news outlets or just see it as a free game. One exception was Warhammer Online. I liked that when you would exit the beta, a survey would pop up asking questions about your current game session and could report bugs to the devs. I want to say they would even weed out testers that were just submitting bogus or empty bug reports.

It has been mentioned before and I would like to express it again. If you get into the beta, please test everything you can. Report the bugs or any concerns. If we want this game to be great for everyone, we need to get the concerns and bugs back to SE as early as we can. I do not want to see what AION is going through with FFXIV. Aion seriously needed to stay in BETA a good extra 2 months. Good luck everyone. BTW sorry about the long post.

As I just posted in another thread...it was only a few weeks after keys became 'available' that things were rolling.

They likely could have started earlier, but the folks who needed HDD's had to wait for shipments, such as myself.

Definitely still some Beta players kicking around (I am one of them and have a few others in my small LS). I didn't get to play as much as I wanted to in Beta, but it was still a lot of fun.

I am really hoping to get into the FFXIV beta, it would bring back all those fond memories. FFXI was my first MMO, I would like to go into the FFXIV one with a little more MMO experience behind me :)

Right so, I have a question that's been bugging me;

How did the beta work for FFXI? What I mean by that is, are all characters started at a very high level so that they can access all areas and test for bugs from the go, or is it just like the game and you have to get 'xp' in order to access new areas without dying straight away? If someone could fill me in that would be great.

I think it would depend on what part of the beta you're doing. I think I participated in the final part of beta for ffxi, and as such it was just like I got to play the game before it was released. I swear I think we didn't start with maps for the town, that would explain why I was so **** lost in windurst.

I vaguely remember that phase. I only participated for about three or four days before they cut off open beta, since I let the key sit in my inbox for quite a while.

No maps seriously did suck though. Another feature of beta that sucked was mog houses were still very, very glitched. You'd have to zone in and out a bunch of times to get your moogle to show up. :/

found this topic googling, cool to see some old beta pics, i had a bunch but i can't seem to find them anymore :(

but i found me in a couple of your pics! a fellow taru brother!

http://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af289/Paranoidpuma/Sup031014212626b.jpg

lol that end of beta event was so crazy, even if it just consisted of mass lag, dying, raising and teleporting.

I want to say I think I remember you a bit, at least your name seems familiar. and blm like me, right? didnt you hang out with Angelheart, i think her name was, a female taru whm. i remember lots of people hating her, some claiming she was a guy, lol. but i got along with her, always sort of wondered what happened to her, and if she really was a ...she, lol.

I played with the Phoenix Down crew during beta and then some at launch, but never got to end game stuff(the beta was such a better experience!). There were some pretty hardcore players in that LS(Taimoor, lol), i'd bet some of them still play.

About a year ago I did that recall account thing and actually got my beta character back, that was pretty awesome. but im inactive now.

pretty stoked for ffxiv!

I can't remember exactly when i signed up, im going to say it was around January or February (really not that sure though) but i know the beta started in early june and lasted till October.(2003?) I got in as a ps2 tester at the very start, they were continually adding more people over the beta, although i think a lot of them were PC.

no they didnt change really anything for the beta, everyone started out with new characters and leveled up. Im pretty sure they didnt even mess with the xp rates. I even remember at the beginning there were no zones under control so nobody had any crystals for like the first two weeks! If i remember correctly, at first only the original zones were open and then they opened the zilart stuff later on. The highest level people got was around 50-55, dont think anyone could do G2.

FFXIV beta will probably be a lot different. The FFXI beta was more like a promotional tool than an actual beta. The game had already been out for a year+ in japan so it was already pretty polished, I don't even remember any significant bugs or them even patching anything.

There were a few things patched in the Beta that I can remember. The major one was originally when you leveled, you automatically started at 0/xxxx tnl. So if you were 1 tnl and got 200 ixp you wouldn't be 199/xxxx. That was changed about September in the testing I believe. There were other issues with agro and stuff that was addressed, but I can't remember the exact details. Oh and they also discovered the flaw with people bumping their fps beyond 30 and increasing movement speed. I remember a friend of mine being like "race you!" and then took off almost as fast as a chocobo lol.

The Beta was definitely pretty polished though. FFXIV Beta will be a lot more glitchy I think. Lots to discover and make better. Its not so much about playing the game, but pushing the limits and trying to break it.

I was in the PS2 beta. They sent the HDD and game. I was so excited. When the beta was over we all had to return the HDD in order to get the retail version of it free. It was agony waiting for it because we were still waiting while the PC players (retail) were already playing.

One more thing they corrected in the beta:
If you were in a party, if you entered your mog house, you would automatically be disbanded.
