Once people start playing the beta, will they be able to-Follow

#1 Dec 20 2009 at 12:20 PM Rating: Default
show everyone what's in the game and share info? Or will they be contractually gagged?

I'm not too sure how it all works.

Nope. Check out the very first sticky in this forum. Also look up "NDA" (nondisclosure agreement) an agreement you signed if you applied.

NDA prevents them from releasing pretty much any info about the game, though with the way some people are, I'm sure info will be leaked anyway.

I really don't see how they would find out. First off, it's not at all hard to make a false secondary account(As in an account to send info too and post from.). take some screen shots, send to that email, edit out names in the SS, then post them.

Ex:

Beta test as Stromboli with all correct info(email, address, whatever it asks for...) and go from there on legit info.

Now create an email address that they don't have any info on, create a forum name no one knows and post random info and screen shots of the game. and if you wanna play it safe. Send everything to a different computer, maybe a friend who isn't testing, and edit out names in those SS's.

Least this is what I would do, if I were testing. Least to keep some interest on the table. Sadly my computer can't handle it or I would apply, nor do I have a PS3(yet)

It's not that it's hard to do, it's that many people won't be doing it out of respect for the company that gave them an opportunity to play the game before others.

If your looking at this situation and seeing an obvious disconnect, that's because there is.

If you sign a contract to say you'll be quiet, and that contract was validly enforced, it seems as though there wouldn't be any information floating around. But oftentimes the fanbase makes podcasts, youtube videos, blog write-ups without seemingly much in the way of consequences. Oh sure, stuff gets taken down, but nobody gets taken to court.

That's because the contracts are more for Media than they are the General Public.
MMOs are in a strange position. They have to, at some point, give the public access to their product in potentially unmarketable stages to ensure a smooth release. But they don't want to open a Gamepro a few days later and see a six page spread spoiling every juicy bit and highlighting every flaw. It's one thing when Anonymous Fan #32 leaks something, but it's a completely different matter when a reputable Media Outlet does it. The NDA is the answer for this, wielded less like a blunt instrument to the masses, and more a precision tool of leverage against a select few.

However you may handle your gossipy inclinations, it's important it stays off of ZAM.
With Sundi taking the position of no Official Forums in favor of some ill-defined culling of information from community sites, it's more important now more than ever that ZAM reaffirms it's position as a trusted site in the eyes of SE. Not just for them, but for us too.

I can understand that, but I'm also thinking for the VAST majority of people not testing and losing interest for lack of any info to keep them on the hook. I understand, it's SE's game, let them do the advertising, yet how often do they advertise for MMO's. Also, when I do finally get into FFXIV, I would like the MMO I would eventually be getting into to have a decent amount of traffic.

No, they won't. They aren't even allowed to tell people they're participating.

Some info will inevitably trickle out, but unfortunately we won't really have sure info until beta testing is over and the NDA is released.

...unless you get accepted. *prays* - not holding my breath though, so many applicants make it feel like I've just entered the lottery. News of the beta applications were all over the net in an hour and people were even spreading the word in-game on other MMORPGs I was playing lol

Everybody pulls this "people get uninterested because of lack of information and don't get the mmo." Who are these people? I've yet to hear someone say, "Well, haven't heard anything on this in a good while, so when it comes out there's no way in **** I'm getting it." What kind of logic is that anyways? This is just an excuse to feel elevated by "saving" SE's game and getting people interested by spreading the news. In reality, it doesn't affect you at all. People seem to think there's a big difference between having 8 million playing and 500 thousand. The fact is, all that influences is the number of servers, in the end, whatever you're server is, it's going to be populated. If it wasn't, they'd lower the number of servers.

I fully expect to see the full beta version of FFXIV minutes after beta-testing begins. There has never been an open beta that hasn't been leaked.

But that's the point its not an open beta... so NDA applies.

Squenix will still be releasing info about the game during beta testing as part of their marketing strategy. It's not like once the beta starts, all forms of information are shut down and silent. All MMOs do this. This is a weak excuse, and again, one seen all too often. People need to remember that a beta isn't for gaining information about the game before anyone else, it's for testing the game, squashing bugs, and helping to make the game playable and the best it can be at release.

I'm not asking to know much - I just want to know what races we have, what the starting locations are geographically, and the structure for the character creation system.

I'm not asking for a straight beta leak or anything. Just tiny bits of information to set my mind at ease would be good enough for me.

I'll probably be telling my rl friends how awesome it is; and some of them might watch from over my shoulder; but I doubt they, or I, will be posting any of the information to the web.
