Ahh, a couple new Screenshots too. Including our leaked European site screenies, and our leaked "crab" screenie (predictably sans shopped XI blue crab).

I wonder if that new forest area might be our first look at Gridania or at least the area surrounding it. Its also nice to see an up close shot of Limsa Lominsa but there is something about it that is throwing me off that I hope is corrected to some extent by release. It just looks... too clean. The shots of the in game cut scenes also give me great hope for the story presentation. Voice overs with that kind of detailed CS will be outstanding.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what parts are CGI and what parts are screenshots of the engine. From the looks of it, there'll either be a lot of pre-rendered cutscenes in the game or the graphics are just that **** good :P

Agreed
From what I can tell we need to be on full alert for "Bullshots" imho.
Allot of the pictures are too good and I think we are often seeing pre-rendered cinematics. However a great deal of the images that are in game renders are still absolutely freaking gorgeous. The details in the normal maps on the armor is really impressive. Especially for an MMO. I also can see that the world locations still follow a very similar building methods from FFXI however the increased detail really helps them stand out.

Notice that the two shots of the HillTroll Pugilist monster being in exactly the same position in each of the shots. That might be because they are prototyping the game play and his animations were never hooked up. So he might have been created very recently. He stands in what most refer to as a T pose.

If the building methods are still the same I then wonder if the game will allow for jumping off cliffs or swimming. At the moment I am leaning toward movement being pretty similar to FFXI with invisible walls that prevent you from jumping in ponds ect.

The character creation section seems about as simplistic as the old system in FFXI though. :/
Well its upgraded a bit but its nothing super crazy. Looks like the old system with a few upgrades.

There's a really nice song on the official ffxiv website, if your having problems it's most likely due to firefox. Try using a different internet explorer, it worked for me.

seems to be quite a few new screenies.. alot i hadnt seen before.. so i'm guessing new unless the EU site and US site have different content... o.0 lol

the character creation system provides all you need now. before it was just "face, hair, race" pretty much.. now we get facial features which brings the game in line with almost all other games which is all i ever wanted so i'm happy ^^

The new music is SUPERB, I like even more than the selection from the last update. Also, for those doubting the improvements in character creation be sure to check out the media section. There you will find many new screenshots including a close-up of a group of characters selected to demonstrate the wide range of looks that will be possible to create. You will also notice that the character creation narration includes details such as being able to alter size and shape of facial features. It appears to be a well balanced system that should preserve the high integrity of character design while allowing enough freedom to create a unique character.

IMO, the actual game play screen shots are these if you start at the top left of the page:

numbers 12, 13, 18 - 28, 43, 58, 60-73

All the others look like cinematic cut scenes to me. I'm probably wrong about a few, but just a guess.

I think you have to look between the lines a bit.

Just take a look at the Hair. White, black, 50% grey shows us we have some control over Brightness. Red, yellow, blue shows us we have control over Hue. Brown shows us we have some control over Saturation. It's a Limited Palette, essentially. (I would hazard a guess, Highly Saturated colors being the part that's limited.)

Granted, a limited palette is pretty status quo nowadays.
When you stack it up next to things like STO allowing you to create entire Races. Then yes, I admit, we're not exactly breaking any barriers here. But this is far above and away superior to XI.

Also in the spirit of reading in between the lines;

I think the outfit gives us some indication of how armor customization will go.
While a certain degree of changing the outfit was necessary when changing the skin tone. There was a bit more done here.

- Colors changed in ways that seem more for the sake of changing color than they are to serve the function of standing out from the skintone (1,4).

- The material changed. Some have a stain-y sheen (3,7), others a matte cotton (4,5), and others still woven threads (2's top).

- Colors changed sectionally, with the top and bottom being different colors. (4)

- There is an indication of pattern. (2's striped skirt, 4's grated skirt)

Is it just me, or in the very first screenshot, where the Laffell mage is casting the barrier does it look like the other adventurer is in the /heal position. Possibly a return of downtime? Which I don't mind, but it could be an indicator that one could /heal during combat.

Nah, it's not the consoles. If you allowed Hyurs to change their muscle mass to the degree many MMOs today allow it, you'd end up with a Roe. If you allowed Elz to control their age as some MMOs have experimented with, you'd end up with a Lalafell.

I'm sure they didn't think much of it at the time, they couldn't possibly have predicted how customization would progress over the 5 years they spent in production. But in the end, they've paid for their timidness by designing themselves straight into a corner.

I beleive that to much customization options lessens the quality and realism of your character. I'm happy with the options that SE is giving us, i can't wait to make a cool Lalafell.

The one Elezen seems to be a pirate (eye patch and all, love that!), so is that just gear or a new class? I mean I expect Archers to just to be about bows, so will we get one that's guns?

The pirates are likely from the game's storyline. We're probably see stuff like eye patches/various hats but I don't think you're going to see pirates with guns (COR). You'll probably see guns though since it's mentioned somewhere on the site. But yeah the Lalafell pirate in the background is obviously a Great Axe user

God, please new races. It's still kind of ridiculous that there isn't any.

They could be gearing up for a big reveal but it's look less likely as more information comes in. It would be kind of difficult to filter out the other races in all of the cinematics/etc. we've seen so far, wouldn't it? I dunno...

If anyone is still having trouble accessing the new content, clear you private data. In Chrome, this is under the control menu (wrench) in the top-right, in Firefox, it is under the Tool->Clear recent history option (sorry, I don't remember where it is in IE). Then refresh the page, that should allow you to see the new content.

I'm digging the visuals. Customization seems about where I'd want it. Skintones, facial detail, customizing nose, eyes, mouth, etc. I'm sure we'll still have some height and build customization, just not to completely retarded parameters, like in some games.

That's a bit of a negative spin on it. As I see it, it's really just a different way of approaching it. All of options and body types are still there, just spread among the races. I honestly prefer this, design-wise, as the different races are easily distinguished and characterized by their builds. It's sacrificing complete customization for something that would fit and mesh better into the game world, and that's more important to me than being able to create a hulked out hyur or a shota(loli?) Roe.

I also want to see tons of facial customization and a height/muscle slider, but please Square Enix don't add any LIMB length options. Trolls on Aion make characters with tiny non-existent legs and super long arms and it looks like some WoW dwarf had a child with Mr. Fantastic. But just speaking about making my own character, it's kind of hard to proportion the legs/arms correctly with my character's height and I wish it would do that for you.
There definitely needs to be a line on creation -_- but I'm hoping we see have plenty of options and no more CLONES.

Actually I stand corrected. You have a very good point

Looking closely at many of the screen shots I believe that they may very well be using a more advanced material system with programmatic variable to set RGB values and possibly Hue/Saturation. This is a common feature in many modern material systems I find like in the Unreal 3 engine. You can take a material with details on it and such then have another variable that determines its base color. You can use a system like this to determine a large number of color modifications. It might even be a useful system for world environment assets like trees and flowers. Notice how vibrant and colorful the world is in the screen shots. Take one material and apply this variable and you can make it whatever color you want. You can even potentially make an entire field of flowers with all different colors using a randomized variable based on world coords or other such factors.

This could apply to anything from eye color, hair, armor, whatever has materials. This would be a very useful feature especially in an MMO. It would also mean that the asset creators are under greater pressure to make more unique meshes rather than making one type of armor that differs simply by changing the color. If players have the ability to dye armor to whatever color they want then I could have easily made my leaping boots look like Dusk boots ect. This would create an asset environment where unique meshes are stressed.

know what I mean?

I'm excited all together, the game is so close I can taste it. I think that customization has to have some boundaries or you risk losing the image of a real world environment within this final fantasy universe. Having a elzen character shorter then a lalafell just would take something off the feel of the game. It has enough customization so you can make your own unique character, but not enough to ruin the appearance of the game. Also this probably is not all you can customize, a lot of the details still have not been disclosed.

The story-line sounds great with it having two threats to worry about, and the power to experience the past within every adventurer. It makes you wonder why and many other questions, which is the trademark of a great story-line. The in-game pictures look incredible, even though I'm not die-hard on graphics of a game, these photos (even the in-game ones) look stunning. With the Banzuko people having the power to summon their own gods, I wonder if thats where avatars went too. With them not having a summoner class in the game, that would be a great use of the avatars. That fire one he summoned was probably ifrit.

I doubt they add a smn class in the game anyway because I don't know how it would fit with the weapons and stuff like that. Also if that was Ifrit he summoned, then I further doubt they will have a smn class because it was stated that "only the Banzuko people can summon these powerful beings." It is suppose to be a new form of magic they are using to conquer the world, that only they can use. With the story being set like this, it wouldn't make sense at all to have a smn class. Avatars seem to be viewed as gods in this game, how would adventurers get the power to summon gods at will? If we can then what would the Banzuko people use to conquer the world now? Just wouldn't make sense at all.

The part about picking a race and a "clan" makes me wonder in a good way. I knew that the mithra remade characters had two different unions of people, but I don't know if thats the same thing or not. I wonder what exactly is a clan and hope further details are disclosed later.

Those are guildleve cards in that picture, and not a card-game.

One can only guess at this point. But in the story they basically say people put aside their differences to band together to fight the greater evil. So tensions may still be high between the good people of the world. By choosing your "clan" might be choosing your alignment to the various citystates. Similar to picking Bastok, Sandy, or Windy in XI.

If this is the case, it would allow them to implement PvP of some type into the game more easily without going against the game's story line/lore. There was also a PvP option in the beta application supporting the guess that there might be PvP of some type in the game. Clans might just be the alignment tool for creating the sides in PvP?

Yeah I noticed her. I thought she kinda looked like a "dark elf". I don't think her color was clan related though. Avatar customization allows various colors to be chosen from when creating your avatar. I think she was just a darker skin tone to show the variations we can create.

Most likely the same color I'll be creating when game launches. Since reading R.A. Salvatore back when I was younger I have been a fan of Drizzt Do'Urden. That's why I tend to lean towards elvan type races in games.

I'm pretty sure they mean each race has a set of two clans-

Hyur- Highlanders (mountain areas ppl) vs Midlanders (lower elevated areas)
Elezen- Duskwight Elezen (reclusive) vs the normal Elezen (social)
Lalafell- no info about it on their race page
MiQote- Seekers of the Sun (diurnal) vs Keepers of the Moon (nocturnal)
Roegadyn- Hellsguard (reclusive "magic masters" mountaners) vs their port seaman normal clan

I'd say each race will have two clans to pick from, along with their nation of choice. Maybe if you pick a clan, you will have to pick the corresponding area they belong with, or you will get a reward (similar to ffxi nation starting rings) if you select the corresponding nation.

I'd say each race will have two clans to pick from, along with their nation of choice. Maybe if you pick a clan, you will have to pick the corresponding area they belong with, or you will get a reward (similar to ffxi nation starting rings) if you select the corresponding nation.

You could also at least say sorry for the semi necro bump

My channel with FFXI battle music and hard to find songs that were not even released on Original Soundtracks.

I also plan on uploading FFXIV music when the game is released.
