I just had a thought, I think it would be fantastic if SE named the FFXIV servers the same as FFXI. That would make finding old friends from FFXI much easier.

I'm sure most, it not all, FFXI players will be at least checking FFXIV out. I love the idea of exploring a new and exciting world with familiar people. It would be nice to see the people from my various linkshells in FFXIV.

How do you guys plan on meeting up with friends on release date? What if the server names are different? Let's hope SE keeps the server names!

I actually gave my account to one of my friends in Asura. I wish I never did that though. It would be hard for me to find old friends who knows if they changed names or servers. I wish I could me up with my old friend Horn though he was the coolest guy I ever met while playing the game.

Yar, FFXIV fully needs like a social networking site inside the game so you can track down old friends hehe.

Well, I'll be posting on =50 to organise what server me (and others) will be going on. Maybe on BG as well, but I don't really know anyone on there. It's up to them if they want to join us, but some of us have already decided we'll be staying together :)

I hope that some old friends will be returning as well. It'll be posted on Facebook.

Old friends are nice, but I hope to meet a lot of new people too. Since we'll all be new and all explorers, hopefully I'll make lots of new friends!

LOL, the new info released just made me dig through all my email contacts to find who I could from my days of ffxi.

Would be nice to start the game with at least a handful of people who I was adventuring with back then, on top of the many new ones to come.

I'm lucky in that my LS in FFXI had our own website, and many of us continued to talk through the forums there even after leaving FFXI. So now we have already built our FFXIV website, and just waiting for the game to go live so we can start the adventure over again.

Fortunately the only friends I want to play with I have on MSN.

Other then that, I always kinda like the idea that we could secretly be playing with people that we knew and loved or hated from FFXI, it would be epic to one day realise and suddenly be like...NO WAY IS THAT <person> FROM FFXI!?

I had some sort of thing worked out with memebers of my old shell from Midgardsormer that I would if I could keep the same name and that if the servers were not the same I would choose the first server alphabetically. Anyone that wanted to meet up would choose the same one. I do keep in contact with some people but sadly not all my friends left me their e-mail and my old proboard forum crashed and that had most of thier details on.

They're good server names for a Final Fantasy MMO, but I hope they don't have so many this time... maybe just some of the same ones? lol

Luckily for me I had a fantastic time with the majority of pandemoniumites, I'd explore Eorzea (sp?) with them anytime. Of course I am looking forward to meeting new people as well :)

the majority of FFXI players are some of the friendliest, most helpful and ouright good people I have ever come across in any MMO. Since a pretty huge chunk of FFXIV's population will surely be ex or current FFXI players, I'd say you will make some fantastic friends along the way.

That is awesome to hear! I played WoW for about 4 years and I would say most people wouldn't even give you the time of day without a price.

If the server names are different, what would people prefer:

1) A major FFXIV website (such as zam or FFXIVcore) to create a mapping between FFXI server names and FFXIV server names, so that if you want to be with your friends (and enemies) you just follow the mapping. If there are more FFXI server names than FFXIV server names, then multiple FFXI server names can be mapped to one FFXIV server name. If there are less FFXI server names than FFXIV server names, then a one-to-one mapping can be created, where there will be excess FFXIV server names that are not mapped to an FFXI server name.

2) A more complex website that allows you to enter your FFXI name and what server you were/are on in FFXI and what server you intend to join in FFXIV (or undecided). Then, using that site you can search for your friends and link to them, ensuring that all of you will join the same server. If you find a friend that intends to join a different server, you can send a message or email telling your friend you want him/her to join your server.

Not to sound like a humbug, I had great "friends" (and even a handfull I wouldn't put qoutes on) on Sylph... However I truly enjoyed my first month of FFXI (PC NA release) just exploring and doing my own thing. Obviously at end game it was fantastic having a top tier LS and connections in Dynamis LSs and such, but nothing tops my first few weeks of FFXI. The JPs were still leery of us, but quite a few were welcoming and tried their best to show people around. I know (well hope) that they hold true with the simultanius world wide release this time, and the only hand holders will be those who were in Beta.

I'll be starting on a different server if the names are the same. Maybe this time I'll join whatever Pikko and the ZAM crew jump on. I want the wonderous excitement of a fresh new world, and to me that means fresh faces as well.

FFXI was very group-dependant, so reputation mattered a whole lot. People who are selfish in other games were forced to act friendly in FFXI, or they wouldn't be able to obtain help later on. This is why the community in FFXi was so good. Everyone needed each other. This is also why I'm dreading the solo system overtaking the game.
