FFXIV's most likely classesFollow

I took some time to go over all the classes from the previous FF games. Some characters were harder to classify. A lot of the FFVII and VIII characters were excluded because they had no real class and therefore only appeared in that game. Any class that only appeared once was removed as well. I'm not counting FFX-2, the FFT series, or FFXIII yet.

Warrior(Fighter) 6

Paladin(Knight) 8

Monk(Master) 9

Thief 8

Ninja 7

White mage 8

Red mage 5

Black mage 7

Dark Knight 4

Dragoon/Lancer 7

Ranger(Hunter/Archer) 4

Scholar 2

Geomancer 2

Summoner(Evoker) 6

Bard 4

Sage 2

Engineer 2

Mystic Knight(Sorcerer) 2

Mime(mimic) 2

Berserker 2

Blue mage 5

Beastmaster(Trainer) 3

Dancer 3

Samarai 4

Cannoneer/Gambler 3

Gunner 4 (I put COR in both Gambler/Gunner categories)

Gladiator(FFV GBA) I included this class because it's already announced for FFXIV.

We already know that Gladiator, Pugilist, Archer, Thaumaturge, Marauder, and Lancer are announced for FFXIV. I'm curious how many of the above classes will be making a comeback. Pugilist marks the 10th game for MNK now. Anyone care to guess based on the old classes? I omitted classes that only appeared once in case you're wondering where Onion Knight is on the list.

It's funny that you chose to not include FFX-2 or FFT yet even though those two games are very job-heavy. As for classes to 'most likely' be seen, it all depends on how varied the array of weaponry is in FFXIV. If the weapons and armour are as vast, or even more so than in XI, then chances are we'll be seeing every kind of class.

I don't see your point. The list was to show which job classes have shown up most often in the FF universe. FFT and FFX-2 will just confirm the positions as both of those games have DRK, WHM, SAM, etc. anyways. Square has a history of heavily borrowing elements from the past. FFXIV looks to be the spiritual successor of FFVI so far.

I think there will be classes that resemble: Ninja-Katana, Samurai-Great Katana, Rogue-Double Daggers, Gunner-Guns of every variety (just like the Archer but specializes in different weaponry and abilities), Dark Knight-Scythe, Barbarian-Great Sword, Bard-I'd like to see something completely different than what we know it to be, Berserker-Double Axes, ?XxXxXxX?-Great Hammer, Summoner, Beast Mater, Necromancer-Can't go wrong with this one! And many many more classes, i would really like to see Square Enix go wild with ideas. These of course would mostly be additions either via patch/update or expansion.

That would actually be quite great, even if I liked FFV better.

I definitely think it will be borrowing more from some of the older FF games, given the Producer did head the development of FF I, II and III.

I don't know how likely it is, but it would make my day to see BLU be included in XIV.

My guesses are

Sadly some jobs are left out mainly because I couldn't think of a weapon that goes with the job such as Red Mage. That is one of the key things we can't forget when thinking in terms of jobs, weapons are the jobs. One question that remains is if off-hand items count as a "job" such as shield.

OP: That is my point. Sorry if I was unclear, but that's basically it. If you'd gone about your original post and added something like dyvidd did after your analysis, then I wouldn't have disputed you at all.

Yeah, it's cool. I see what you mean now. I'd redo the list, but it's not really possible at the time. Instead I'll describe RDM's known weapons/armor for Dyvidd.

RDM's are light armored hybrid melee fighters. The tools used by the RDM class consist of the following:

Preferred weapon for RDM is best known as the rapier sword. The rapier sword is a lighter short sword used primarily for thrusting. Epee(French for sword) swords which descended from the rapier sword are well known to be used in the FF universe by RDM's as well. Both for used for dueling, hence the name duelist. The Joyeuse is a rapier sword in FFXI. RDM is capable of wielding rapiers, knives/daggers, short swords, low weight broad swords, wands, bows, and the staff.

/tips his Duelist pimp hat and smiles

Problem is you still aren't thinking in terms of weapons = job. Gladitor is already using 1H Sword so all abilities for sword are gladitor based.

I think Shadow is still seeing it in terms of weapon = job. Don't forget that armour is also bound to have an effect, so a character wielding an Epee and mage-like armour, if possible, will still be something of a RDM. I'm really interested in seeing how SE will coordinate weapons and armour, so I'm trying to not limit the classes to weapon = job specifically.

You realize that Gladiator uses gladius and ******* swords? Those type of swords are slashing based where as a rapier/epee sword would fall under a thrusting/fencing style of sword play. You seem to think that sword skills are so generic that one fits all. That's not the case.

For example, take a Katana for the NIN class. Now compare a Sai weapon. Both weapons can be used for the class, but the Sai is more of a defensive weapon. Let's further speculate how that system might be applied to FFXIV. You might learn more defensive(parry) type moves wielding a Sai vs a regular katana blade. If swords were all lumped in the same category, that would be very limiting as different swords provide unique functions of use.

I do think that the weapon will have a significant effect on the character's class. A bruiser class like Gladiator is more capable of wielding a ******* sword compared than say a mage class. SE already confirmed you can have a melee wear cloth armor, but it won't be nearly as effective as the heavy DD gear. Yes Gladiator has access to swords, but swords are the most common weapon in the fantasy universe. It makes no sense to have one class that is proficient in using them.

To the extent that it contains classes (in some cases more clearly than others) you should include Dissidia.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Well if in you look at other MMO's no matter what the name or design of the weapon is they belong to a specific weapon class. In FFXI terms there is:
1H Sword
2H Sword
1H Axe
2H Axe
Staff
Club
1H Katana
2H Katana
Dagger
Polearm
Scythe
Range
Instruments

With that SE has two option. One is to divide said weapons classes so that 1H Sword would become Long, Short, Saber, Rapier. Based on what the FFXIV website shows Gladitor can use both short and long sword as well as shield.

Second is every weapon in the game will have different ability to learn similiar to FFVI Esper or FFVII Materia. This is also a possible choice for SE to go. It would help with customize a character as well as fuel the crafting market.
