Disclaimers:
1) Sorry if this thread was started already, but I couldn't find anything.
2) I realize not all classes are out yet. In that case, please describe the class you hope will be.
3) I realize there are no "jobs" per se, just different areas of specialization.

Personally,

Class: Illusionist.

Reason: I'm hoping this class will be am important utility role that can control the flow of battle endgame.

It's impossible for me to pick a class from the DoM because there's absolutely no information on those yet and my first class will most likely be from this category. The first class i choose from the five known DoW classes will most likely be Lancer but i would choose a class that wields a Great Sword over a Polearm and Dual Daggers over both so it all depends on the weaponry for my melee class.

Lancer. only because blue mage hasn'nt been introduced yet.
Lancer : I've idolized dragoons as a class of power and honor ever since i played Legend of the dragoon(I know, not a SE dragoon but i love em anyway) and when i played with kain highwind.
Blue mage : Now this class has always talked to my psyche. throw away everything else, Money, possesions, friends, fame and family, for power. and using my opponents powers against them is a plus. But if booth classes are introduced, ill go blue mage all the way.

Lancer, most likely.

I've always liked spears. Much prefer them to the other melee weapons. Not sure why, perhaps it's because FFVII's Cid was my favorite character of the series.

Sure wish they'd let us use a combo of Spear/Shield though. I'd love to play a Paladin-styled character that just happens to use a spear.

I'm not set on it though. Mostly, I like playing rare classes. It's why I picked Ranger in FFXI (back when nobody played them because of the expense).

But if a healing Lancer is viable, then I'll definitely roll with that.

A Galka (Roe) healer.

Reason: My good friend is going to be whatever the best tank ends up being. A set healer and tank is a very useful combo, plus he likes to tank and I like to play a healing class well.

In FFXI I started with mages, this time I think I'll go melee. Right now I'm thinking I'll be a Pugilist; I got really into PUP during my final time in FFXI and if I stayed I might have considered picking up MNK. I may also try up w/e the WHM equivalent is as a 'guaranteed-party-spot-so-I'm-not-waiting-around-forever-trying-to-do-content' job, depending on how they handle the whole balance thing this time around.

Of course if by some miracle they actually release a summoner job then I will definitely do that instead. I would also enjoy a BLU-esque job. I loved playing BLU back when it first came out and it was still fun because people were still discovering what it could do. I'm sure it's still fun now in a way, but there's something special about being there before the guide and min-maxing.

By "lay of the land" do you mean terrain? Like vertical height differences, obstacles, etc?

Since I was RNG in FFXI, I am interested in archer, but for me to go archer I'd want more than 50% of the endgame fights to be kited. Otherwise, I'd just end up standing in one place and spamming one macro.

I have a bunch of RL friends who I played XI with and we are trying to go into FFXIV with a set party going. It actually works perfect since we all want to play different jobs. I will probably play Archer this time around, or maybe the BLM type job. Honestly it depends how the magic animations look. How my character looks in battle really matters for me, and has a drastic effect on how much I enjoy fighting.

lol, if not the least-fun answer you could have given, that has to be the least-fun way you could have described it. Basically you want to be something that dual wields and executes many attacks quickly?

Hopefully I won't be forced to choose between what I think is cool and what's effective. For weapons, I like katana and shuriken, but I'd like to be able to create a hybrid with some elemental magic mixed in.

Regardless of how effective it will be, I will always be a bow-wielder at heard. I've played the ranger/archer as my main class in every RPG I've played.

So obviously I'm going to be an Archer in XIV.

Too bad the Ranger in XI was all about DD. My ideal "Archer" would be similar to the Ranger in D&D. Stealth and tracking are big aspects of the Ranger.

We don't know exactly how the "job change" will work, or how "multi-jobbing" will. But if choosing a secondary job is viable on the same character as it was in XI, it will be some sort of support job (like how in XI I was Rng as main and Brd as secondary).

Depending on how the game turns out, I may also have a second account as a healer/support. My secondary account in XI was a Rdm.

So if things go the way I like:

Main account:
Archer as main
Support job as secondary

Second account:
Healer/support job

I'm going to play a tank class, wielding a shield and defending the weakling behind me :P

I'm going to try to make it more like a warrior than a paladin. But if paladin-like is better for questing (guild-leves or whatever they are called) then so be it.

Also if I can do it while using a great sword for questing then great!

plate armor always looks the coolest

That is exactly what I mean. What i'm hoping is that we will have different types of moves that require different positioning. Kinda how i'm looking at it now:

Basic shot: Level or slightly higher ground for most damage. Requires an average distance.

Torrential Downfall: Shoot mulitiple arrows in the sky which fall with brute force. The higher up you are the more damage they will have. Requires slightly further distance...very quick diminishing return point, meaning if you move too far most of the shots will miss.

Heart piercer: Big damage with a damage over time debuff which also increases damage done by others. Power shot that requires you to be below the mob and closer for best accuracy. Too close and you lose damage.

Basically then we are useful in fights and we do more than just stand still and auto attack. Hopefully we have some tools that will keep stuff away from us (throw a net [used if you are above the mob], toss some tar on the ground [used if you are level with the mob]) and some unique buffs we can use based on where we are standing and what move we are using (like sharpen arrow for the heart piercer or accuracy + for the torrential downfall).

Samurai. I've always been deeply interested in the art of Bushido and the history of samurai themselves. I'm just hoping G. Katanas or the equivalent will be available to equip. If not, I'll go with some kind of support, like Bard or Corsair.

Agreed. I'd like to create a paladin-like job that focuses on party buffs and "single use" debuffs (Stun, Flash, etc.) rather than on healing and defensive magic. Similar to a captain from LotRO, for anyone who's played that. Hopefully the new system will allow for stuff like that.

Aside: I'd also like to never, ever equip subligar. I'm not holding my breath on that one, though. Square seems fascinated with having a vast majority of its playerbase running around in panties. Weirdos.

I simply could not bring myself to equip a subligar, even when it was the best equipment available. I was pretty extreme about having the best gear at all times, too. I dinged into a Peacock Charm on my first main after working for a very long time on crafting and making money so that I would have it as soon as I could use it. You would still not catch me dead in a subligar, not even if it had Added Effect: 10,000 XP bonus upon death.

My first job in XI was BLM back before they lowered the exp needed to reach 75. While it was my favorite job, it sucked to level as a first job. Party invites came freely back then for BLM, but trying to level to 10 with just a +1 Int club was a paaaaain.

If I had known how much of a pain it was going to be, I would have started with RDM. You still get the chance to raise your elemental and healing skills, but you get a sword to make life easier in the beginning.

Also, BLM required a lot of gil for a lot of scrolls. Farming as BLM was terrible for me. I eventually capped my scythe skill since it was my strongest possible weapon. If I had just thought about doing RDM first, which was a sub I'd need eventually anyway, life would have been easier.

Anyway, I want to be BLM-esque class in the long run. But I'm going to start with something that allows me to be a hybrid (melee attack, deal magic damage and hopefully heal). Hopefully, rapiers let you be like a RDM. Or maybe they'll add Mystic Knight in this one.

Heh. Yeah, I'm pretty much the same way (minus the PCC). Way back when I first started I did have a pair of Beetle Subligar +1 for THF (at least those ones had long johns under the panties), but that was the last time I touched them. I decided pretty quickly that there was a much wider range in gear than just "best" and "gimp", and that wide range would allow me to forgo subligar and still do my job.

Actually how I think this game will work is: you start off with all average stats and attributes, until you equip a weapon and/or shield. Once you do that you will then unlock stats and attributes based on that weapon i.e. if you equip a sword and shield then your def stats and atts unlock and you are now a tankish class.

Depending on your skills with those weapons depends on your stats and which attributes are unlocked etc.

Which I think will be pretty cool, could you imagine you are in Sky fighting MG and 2 or your kiters go down, someone else can then switch weapons and get the atts based on the need in battle. Same with a mage ect...

Mage type jobs have always been my preference in almost any game. I'll probably start out focusing on a mage/support type job in XIV. For DoW Lancer looks pretty cool. Not sure about what I'll craft... maybe cloth?

from the FFXIV site: "players may opt to specialize in one discipline, excelling at a single skill or they may take a more general aproach making free use of the armoury"

So the "class" I think I would use would be either magic or crafting specialist but, it depends on if they set it out like specialists getting large bonus's or other exclusive acess to skills putting them ahead, or rather just flat stat boosts, will change my opinion i'd rather flat stats then a large power boost via abilities though.

Highly offensive melee for me... Gladiator & Lancer are presently definitely on my list at the moment.

Reason: I played Paladin for most of my FFXI period...also eventually leveling BLU, NIN and a couple other jobs for subjob uses; and while I seriously enjoyed PLD very much I want to try something entirely different this time around.

I started playing with NA PS2 launch and at the time I wanted to play the noble honarble knight and yada yada... but five or six years later and I feel more inclined to build a "Decimator".

If it doesn't work out, maybe a smith. When I'm not working on trade skills, I might also try to focus on a collection of skills most similar to the thief job.

I think it was stated that race would make much less difference, not that there wouldn't be any difference between them.

The stats will be less restrictive from races they said somewhere. So not the same but close.

You weren't imagining things :)
