It was surprising to me that this thread didn't already exist, so I checked back through over a month of posts, and still didn't see it. My apologies if there's an even older thread that I didn't see, but if that's the case, surely new posters (like myself) have arrived since then and would also like to contribute!

What are your hopes for the races in FFXIV? What race do you want to play as?

Personally, though it can be limiting, I liked the way that each race had their own strengths and weaknesses. It just makes sense that a Galka/Roegadyn would make a better tank than a tiny Taru/Lalafell.

I'll probably be playing a Lalafell in FFXIV, because I like dealing damage more than taking it- though I'm considering Miqo'te to give myself more options.

No idea atm. In FFXI I was tarutaru, and it was pretty cool seeing from a different perspective than everyone else. Still, one of my biggest problems was came with getting a new pair of footwear and having it reduced to an unrecognizable blob because tarutaru feet/legs are too short to show detail. That's why I'm leaning towards Elvaan or Hume. There's Mithra too, but I'd sooner vote R than play a Galka, just no :D

End the end I think it'll depend on who has the most interesting starting place. Just wish we had more information lol

There's a similar thread about starting new or staying the same or some such, but this is more specific so I'll bite.

I'm going with Miqo'te to actually have my character's gender correspond to my IRL one for once. I like the design and I'm hopeful about the aesthetics of weaponry and the way they hold weapons as well. Stats should be the same across the board no matter what this time around, but I'm not too sure on that. Either way I'm sticking with Miqo'te.

Most probably Miqo'te for aesthetics, although this time round the Galka-equivalent are looking pretty fierce.

I played Hume in XI just because Elvaan was pretty much the opposite of the "traditional" elf (my character was based on my Ranger in D&D, which was an elf). Mithra was the closest thing there was, but I didn't find it very appealing.

For XIV, if the Elezen don't look nearly as stupid as Elvaan, I'll go with that. Otherwise I'll likely end up as Hyur.

Hopefully something new will appeal to me. I vividly recall how disappointed I was with the races in XI, and while I've grown to like them, there still aren't any that really sing to me.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Galka. Unless the auto adjusting camera is as bad as it was early in FFXI. As a Galka in tight spaces you'd often times never see more than your backside on the whole screen.

I was a Male Hume in FFXI, so I think I'll go Male Hyur when the game comes out. I will change my name though just to make it different.

I'm still a little undecided. In the middle of my FFXI career, after having levelled two jobs to 75 on my Hume, I restarted as a Tarutaru, who I've now levelled to 75 on 5 jobs. The Tarutarus are cute and I love the MP since I'm primarily a magic user.

The reason I didn't choose one to begin with is because they're so disproportionate and funny looking that I thought I'd get tired of playing one.
Unfortunately, I was right. After all this time, I would probably prefer to be a Hume... more 'normal'. lol.

That, and my HP makes me extra squishy when I'm soloing on a mage.

The latter won't be an issue in FFXIV according to Square Enix, but I'm still not committing to Lalafell yet. If I can make a Hyur look the way I want, it's more likely that I'll probably go with that for good this time...

Depends on what I see when I get into the character creator!

It depends on the animations. atm, I'm leaning toward Hyur Male again since they seem to have the best animations so far imo. Although I want to be a Roegadyn(most of my ffxi friends were awesome galka) or Elv F(big booty ftw).

If there were male mithra I think I might play one of those but assuming they never add male mithra I'm torn between a hume highlander or a galka hellsguard. I think it depends on the racial traits they have. If there is a large enough difference between the races I'll probably go the middle road hume, if the differences are negligible as SE is suggesting I'll probably go galka.
#12 Jan 16 2010 at 1:08 PM Rating: Decent
Probably whatever the Galka race is this time around.

Lalafell, I had always regretted not being a taru in XI with all of my mage jobs, not to mention everyone always seemed to be surprised that I was a hume when they first actually saw me in game.

I dunno. I loved mithra but we'll see what our options are here when the game is released (I'm talking male cat people here...). I might go out on a whim and play a... *GASP* Lala... >.> <.< >.>

In FFXI I wanted to be a male mithra, then there were none. So I decided to go Elvaan, but I didn't like any of their hairstyles and I heard they have bad rng acc and low MP. Then I settled on Hume.

In FFXIV I guess I'll be whatever these newfangled elves are called.

I could see myself going either Elzen, Hyur, or Rogadin. If there is an even moderate difference between races stat-wise, I'll be going with whichever makes for better mages.

I'm sort of intrigued by the Rogadin clan that specializes in magic. If I go Hyur or Elzen, I'll probably make a female character, as they're looking especially bodacious this time around.

I'm hoping for Manthra this time around. =3

To be honest i'm hoping they're gonna be like "Surprise! new race!" at the last second.

Male Elezen for sure.
What I can't decide is what type of weapons he will use. I've always loved SAM and G.Katanas though.

One thing that would be really nice to see upfront would be battle animations. For example, they've already showed us emotes for all of the races, which I think really helps give you an idea of how your character will feel.

I know that a lot of people were disappointed with, and even changed their race after they saw the battle animations with certain weapons. Since a lot more people will probably pick their races based on aesthetics this time around, this would be very good to see before we pick.

If the pictures on the FFXIV website are any indication, I might find myself playing the Character Creator more then the game itself ;)

It would be great if, after creating, though not finalizing, a character, the game allowed you to run around a little training room so you could decide if you liked how the character looked when it ran around, fought, used emotes, etc..

As far as looks themselves, I am leaning more toward Elezen Male. Unless they have some really wonky animations, I will stick with that choice most likely. I was a hume in XI because one of them looked just like me.

In fact, my cousin and I both started on the same day, in the same city, with the same character model and face without consulting each other first. We also look quite similar IRL. With the new character creator, I could probably make any of the races look enough like me to make them all work.

Only time will tell if they ruin Elezen for me, release a new race that I can't say no to, or show off some animations that I can't pass up.

They have? I think I missed it. Can you specify which vid the emotes are in? If possible, a link would be great. :)

Even though I said I would be a Male Hyur earlier, if enough of my friends want to be Roegadyn's I think I might be one too.

Thank you.

I think Miqo'te has the best animation detail-wise.

In the "/punch" emote, the Roegadyn looks really, really depressed/unpsyched lol. Compare him with the Hyur.

I wasn't a galka epe!! I will more than likely go Elezen F or Miqo'te, depends on which has the better looking gear and melee animations.
