What info do you NOT want to hear about?Follow

#1 Jan 20 2010 at 5:05 AM Rating: Good
I am as eager as most of you are about info updates, but i was thinking about a few things. I remember the first time i logged on to FFXI and took a look around. I hadn't read up on any of it so everything was a surprise to me.
I remember seeing some of the magic animations and thinking how awesome it was. I remember hearing about the sub job system for the first time. I think that many of the surprises i found really made the game for me. So, this raises the question... Are there any parts of the game that you wish to be secret until release?

Edit: typo

Given what company this is, and what we had to do as a community to figure out the finer details of their last MMO, I don't think we are in any danger of receiving too much information. The things I don't want to know ahead of time are things that I'm almost certain they won't release, mainly surrounding the formulas of the mechanics.

I want to know more about the depth of the gameplay mechanics, and short of something like new races or other things that would affect the question, "What kind of character can I make?" I really don't care about anything else right now. Combat mechanics are hugely important, and they're the main reason I quit XI-- combat was too boring. A combat system that looks bad will actually be the one and only thing that will prevent me from even TRYING this game.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I'd love to have a basic idea of everything (combat system, abilities, spells, etc.) before the release...apart from only one thing: The story.

No spoilers, please!

I wouldn't mind if they kept most of the zones/landscape hidden. Exploring a new area with new landscapes is pretty cool, so I wouldn't want to see screenshots of all those areas before release.

I mostly want to know about gameplay mechanics and things that would affect which race I want to play and the weapons skills I would like to develop.

A lot of people playing this game will have come from other MMOs. I often hear about that certain 'magic' of first playing an MMO gets lost over time and is especially missed when you start a new one. I want SE to hold back enough information to put me through a 'oohhhh' honeymoon phase with FFXIV.

I don't want to be told the whole story. Also even though this info would never be told anyway, but knowing what all the armor, cloaks, weapons, and clothes look like because I like looking around at what other people are using and figuring if I want to use what they're using or find a different helpful piece.

I don't want to hear how to accomplish anything in the game just have the information more informative and not be run off disguised as hints that don't go with what's going on . I dont want to hear the relese date pushed back I do wanna hear that invites will/have been sent and Beta will/is underway. I would also like to see the fricken site updated more frequently then it is.

That's the truth, lol.

I suppose I would rather not know too early on about plot details and in-depth game mechanics. But as pointed out, I doubt we'll have to worry about that. Not until beta leaks start to happen at least.

Vader is Luke's father.
Dumbledore's last words are "rosebud" as he is killed by Snape who is actually dressed up as his dead mother and it turns out the planet they were on was Earth all along. Also rosebud is his sled.

The only info I don't want to hear about is info telling us that they won't be releasing any new info.

Endgame, I want to enjoy exploring the games areas in detail mind you, but endgame in general changes people sometimes for the worst.

Once the endgame gear, and endgame time sinks, and endgame etc. etc. etc. come into play, it'll be FFXI all over again :(

The last thing I consider myself in this game is a TH-*****, period. I'd rather solo 30,000xp than be invited to an XP because TH2 was cool to have around. I've spent far too much time doing my best to become adept at playing/gearing THF only to be pigeon-holed by a passive trait that's often used as a scapegoat when random luck screws other players out of what they think the game owes them. :/

Summons, elemental and damage type weaknesses of mobs, that there will be a Brady guide, level ranges of the zones, where the Sand Bats are that will destroy your level 10 ***. I'm going to rather enjoy finding that first aggressive mob that chases me through the zone before it eats me alive. It's kind of a rite of passage to wander into a new zone on your first character and find out that you shouldn't go there quite yet, generally via mandible to face. There are a lot of things that should be discovered by players, most of it where things are and how to do X to get Y.

Actually I'm looking forward to that Brady guide. Should be good for another several years worth of laughs.

I'm probably in the minority, but I would actually like to see them save at least one big surprise for launch, something like a new race, a handful of secret classes, or a new game play mechanic such as pvp (unlikely), an event like einherjar, or chocobo racing (or whatever we end up using them for). Just one big surprise to bring back that "holy sh**!" feeling to make the launch all the sweeter.

It's a funny thing, curiosity. Pre-FFXI launch I had no idea what I would be stepping into, or the scope of the game I just decided to play. I had played a few online games for very brief periods of time before, but the sheer volume of content had not yet dawned on me. All I knew prior to launch was the race models, the names of the nations, and what the home nation of each race was. Now, that's not a **** of a lot of information, and I only knew that much because I saw a brief article about the game in a gaming magazine. Needless to say, after some time, I was amazed. Little did I know at the time I'd play that very game for close to 7 years.

Now I gather information like an undercover CIA agent in a communist rebellion coup meeting. I have to wonder now if my astonishment of the world I'm surrounded by will be the same in Eorzea as Vanadiel given all I know, but it's too late for me now. I know things and want more. I'll take anything. Maybe this will ruin my experience, but if it does I have only myself to blame. Give me more. Those commies will never get anything past me...

Someone earlier described the honeymoon feeling of the game..
ahh.. that was my favorite part about ffxi. When I first started I really had no previous knowledge of it. Just made a character, jumped in and started playing because my friends were playing it too...
The first week I ever played was spring break...and thats all i did for the entire week! hahah i was in awe with the entire game. Not to mention it was my first MMO.. gosh. So I can only hope that FF14 still has that honeymoon feel... Though that was about 5 years ago.. and ive played many games since then. All in all... Final fantasy is my favorite series though.

I am way too excited about this game to want to withhold any information from myself! I cannot wait to play... I really hope it gets released sooooon. This summer would be perfect.... one can dream, eh?

Just be like, Ok, gonna be an Elf Lancer then BOOM, I dont even know anymore with all these choices
