Final Fantasy / History's Mysteries idea thingFollow

Now that we've gotten into 2010, we hope to get a lot more content rolling through the main page. Since Square is so diligent at translating info up on their official site, I've been trying to think of interesting columns and stuff to post. Manner Mode will be coming back, someone's working on a comic, and of course any cool stuff from Japan will have its place.

Anyway, a lot of questions come in through PMs/e-mail , so I thought some sort of mailbag could work. The idea would be to take one topic each time and do like a "History's Mysteries" thing with it. Basically, you submit something about Final Fantasy that you have always wondered about (e.g. last week's spell-naming scheme, why Firaga, why Protectra etc.) and we'll research it here at ZAM and post a column on it.

Maybe you are curious how Moogles came to be named. Maybe you hear about Biggs/Wedge having some Star Wars connection, but you'd like to read more about it.

So this thread is just to:
1) Gauge interest in the column idea
2) Get name suggestions!
3) Get potential topics

Thanks for your help!

Hi I'm Elmyr from Gllgamesh, retired,
Long time reader first time poster,
Dear Mister Moogle,
I have always wondered where did the idea for the Moogles come from, and are they as all powerful as they seem? I've always thought they were hiding the power to destroy the cosmos in that little dangly thing on their heads.

I actually wouldn't mind knowing more about the guy who's doing the art direction for XIV. I know of some of his prior work, but that's about it.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I ran across this article on wikipedia few days ago, and your thread reminded me of it.

Your idea of a mailbag to answer questions sounds similar to a "letter to the editor". I'll see these in every issue of Game Informer where a reader would ask a question of sorts about something in the magazine and the editor usually makes some sort of quirky comment about it or addresses it at large.

You could do the same but instead of a magazine, you have a video game franchise.

As far as names are concerned, have you ever heard of a wunderkammer?
It's German for Cabinet of Curiosities. I had a crazy art history teacher who's nuts about these things. It is what it sounds like, a cabinet full of stuff you collect, but in a more refined encyclopedic type of way. Lots of monarchs had them and served as precursors to museums in some cases.

Hey Elmer! Always been a fan of your work, your videos actually inspired me to play PUP in the first place ^_^

I would certainly read such a column and, being a big Final Fantasy fan, have a few ideas for potential topics.

As far as naming the column, the whole "History's Mysteries" idea, while cleverly rhymed, doesn't really click with the Final Fantasy theme it revolves around. Some random thoughts: "Figuring Out Fantasy: Elmer Examines" "Mystery Motifs: Moogles Investigate"

As far as topics go...

1. What is the history behind crystals in Final Fantasy? Why are they commonly used as a source of great power and usually a core element of the story?

2. Chocobos. They seem so normal now after all these years, but whose idea was it to create a horse-sized chicken?

3. While it's obvious how some Final Fantasy jobs came to exist (i.e. D&D classes) where did some of the less mainstream classes originate? Some examples: Geomancer, Scholar, Puppetmaster, Blue Mage, Dancer, Beastmaster, etc.

While I'm sure I can think of more, I think what I've written is decent fodder for thought.

I for one hope this column becomes a regular thing and can't wait to read your next article! (>^_^)>

Well, as far as topics go, you could always do short bio's on the developers and such. maybe 1 a week/month or so. It could be interesting to see what these people have done in the FF world and out.

Who is CID and why is he important enough to have made it into what seems like every final fantasy game out there?

What was Quina exactly?

And when are we getting sequels to the FF games that never had "proper" endings... (8 and 9 specifically. 8 in particular left so many things unanswered. And I just want closure on Vivi's/Steiner's/Quina's/Dagger and Zidane's stories in 9). 7 didn't need one but got about 5 of the bloody things.

At first I was thinking of something like "What Race would you switch in what Final Fantasy title, why?" along with a fan made image possibly of the race they would replace it with, or, their idea of what some of the existing races should have been more like, along with image.

But I changed my mind...

ooh, ooh, can i write the comlumns?! i know all sorts of weird minutiae about final fantasy. altho ill be honest and say im not entirely certain about moogle naming conventions...my guess is its a combination of cutesy and fun, like the japanese equivalent of comedic relief in a shakespearean tragedy.

What are the average lifespans of moogles and chocobos?

Why do chocobos "refuse" to enter certain areas? It can't be because of the danger; we all know chocobos are unconditionally fearless! The moogles trained them well.

Seriously? So the pack of Red's running across the plains pretty much wrapped things up for you? They at least needed the movie. Personally I'm just wondering when the **** NA will get Before Crisis. At this rate I'm starting to wonder if I'll have to wait for a translated rom.

Hm, I had another idea, but that little rant made me forget it.
