I wont play a game where micro-transactions are required for playing the content. I can however live with micro-transaction for extra nonessential stuff, like a pet or some useless furniture for your Mog house or the like.
The DDO game is sort of unusual micro-transactions. The 100% free account gives you basic access to the game, most of the classes & races but you don't have access to some quest chains. But if you go with the regular $14.99/month account, you have access to everything. There is a third option in between the two which I don't understand why anyone would take.
One of the unusual elements I found was that people can purchases player passes. If you have someone on your team that has a free account, you can get them into a premium content dungeons.
Not a great fan of the above design, but it doesn't seem as evil as other micro-transaction games that I witnesses. At least I don't see "gold seller" spam in the chat channels or email.
I hope the brain-trust behind FFXIV will keep far away from micro-transactions & find a way to stop botting and gil sellers.
