It’s finally time! The FFXIV Roleplaying Coalition (RPC) is finally opening to the public. Before now, we’ve been sending out private invites to known RP groups who managed to survive through FFXI’s dwindling RP community , slowly bolstering our ranks and getting our initial organization underway. If you are remotely interested in the concept of RP in Hydaelyn, then this is the place to sign up. It doesn’t matter how hardcore or casual of a roleplayer you are. It doesn’t matter if you plan to join a RP guild or just freelance RP from time to time. Even if you’re just a general supporter who may rarely ever RP, we would be happy to have your support.

So what is the RPC? We are a collective group of prospective roleplaying guilds/linkshells, freelance roleplayers, and roleplay supporters set for the upcoming new world of Hydaelyn. We will be voting on an “official” RP server upon receiving a server list (assuming SE doesn’t designate a RP server themselves). We are not a super guild or anything like that but rather a coalition, resource, and outlet of/for roleplayers. So why should you join the RPC and/or try to get on the same server (or at least on the forums to keep tabs on what’s going on)?

1. The RPC will eventually be hosting a plethora of public RP related events in game. You’ll see public events ranging from an annual fashion show, fun competitive sports, talent shows, simple tavern gatherings, and a variety of other in character games and events created by and for the denizens of Eorzea. We hope that these public events will pull people away from the general grind and allow them to show off their creativity, get a glimpse of true RP in an MMO setting, and/or just allow people more opportunities to meet new fellow adventurers.

2. The RPC will also be handling the compilation of all lore upon the game’s release. Those who have a background in FFXI may remember sites such as “History of Vana’diel” where organized timelines and NPC profiles were made. This kind of stuff will be centralized on the RPC site/forums eventually (detailed profiles on cities, dungeons, gods, major NPCs, etc). It’s only natural that the roleplayers handle lore related content in such a way seeing as they tend to be experts in that field. In addition to this, we may eventually be creating an in character newspaper similar to the past Vana’diel Tribune (again, after game launch). With SE’s support (assuming they decide to support us), we could probably do quite a lot for both Rpers and non-Rpers alike (writing contests, etc).

3. The RPC will act as a central hub for all other RP aspects of the game. This means RP guilds/linkshells will be advertising themselves here, a lot of character stories and profiles will be posted here, and so much more.

Further information regarding who we are can be found on the main RPC site. If you’re interested in assisting with, taking part in, or just seeing any of the above things unfold, feel free to sign up. We hope that the general Zam community and administration will support us in our endeavors. The roleplay community is definitely going to be bigger, more united, and more organized than it was in Vana’diel. If you’re wondering why this is launching so soon as opposed to waiting until closer to the game’s release, it’s because roleplayers tend to need more time for preparations than the general population. We tend to need lots of time to coordinate our character personas, backgrounds, and so on. In addition, it’s going to take a lot of pre-coordination to get roleplayers more united than they were in FFXI (where they were hardly noticed at all and did their thing primarily in isolation).

The site is currently located here, though the RPC forums (linked on the site) are where most of the action will be found for the time being: www.ffxiv-roleplayers.com

Hope to see many future prospective roleplayers and RP supporters there!

Nice to see you got things up and running, Zarik. I know from our previous conversation how important this is to you. Perhaps I'll drop by your forum to say hi. Not sure if I'm going to join, though; my friend and I already have a LS/guild of our own lined up.

I'm not really in to RP.. but it's a positive thing in the game. I'd like to be on the "RP" server just to avoid the jerks.

I hope your RPC succeeds and for sure if SE dedicates a server to it my friends and I might go to it to see if we can get into it or at least see how others roleplay.

I used to RP back when I started playing FFXI and it made the world seem a lot more close-knit. Good luck with this :D

I didn't know that roleplaying was so in-depth, heh. I'm no RP'er, but good luck! : )

This is just a general bump to thank everyone for their support. We just hit the 100 member milestone. While that may not seem like a major deal to many of you, it's a huge deal when it comes to the RP community. In FFXI, there were generally 5-10 main RPers on each server to start out and they had to struggle endlessly just to keep RP alive on that server. Many RP groups didn't make it and in the end, only a very small handful endured through the years. So you can see that starting out with 100 RPers is a pretty big deal for the Final Fantasy online setting. And considering open beta has yet to even start, even more are bound to continue trickling in as we edge closer to release date.

A new website is also in the works, which should be a big step up from our current simplistic one. We plan to use it to advertise all RP linkshells/guilds, compile all lore related to the world of Hydaelyn in an organized fashion, and much more. We hope even non-Rpers will eventually use the new site as a resource. This thread will be bumped again whenever the new site is ready, though there is no estimated time of completion this soon.

Thanks again for the support guys!

If you guys are really up on the game's lore, and the website helps to flesh out aspects of the game's plot or other interesting tidbits about the setting and such, then I can definitely see checking it out once in a while, even though I don't RP. Sounds very promising.

Glad to hear things are going well.

I'd say if this is your idea of losing dignity, you already accomplished losing the rest of it by even reading the thread and taking the time to reply to it.

Don't mind the haters, Zarik, you've clearly put a lot of hard work into this and to each their own. RP'ing may be considered a guilty pleasure, but it is certainly not any worse than any other guilty pleasure. Best of luck with your website!

Guilty pleasure? :P I have a few of those that are much worse than RPing hehe. I'll sign up for now, but I ussual spend my time online RPing instead of checking guild websites for events and news ;P So don't expect to here from me often once the game starts hehe.
#16Scabu, Posted: Mar 02 2010 at 8:23 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Id say if you don't consider that losing dignity, you probably never had any to begin with.

Zarik wrote a nice article that might interest some, but not all, but now all of a sudden a diginity argument started. People need to be mature and respect that some like to roleplay others don't, but BOTH ways are perfectly fine. I don't think that someone attacking someone's thoughts and making rude remarks about dignity is right. I agree with Bluefirefly's comment that Zarik has put a lot of work in it and certain haters should keep rude comments to themselves.

I posted something more related on topic earlier. I just didn't like how you phrased your comment because Zarik is clearly dedicated and doesn't need to see negative posts. I am not a roleplayer, but I can tell he has strong dedication and I believe he'll succeed. Anyway I don't want to go back and forth so please keep all comments respectful because no matter how we play we all want FFXIV to be great and enjoy ourselves during our playing time in game.

Instead let us all join hands and critique other peoples replies and then say its ok because we posted on topic earlier. Clearly the mature way to go. <-- Respectful comment :D

I know you think you're really clever, but the issue here is not your disagreeing with this post, it's the way you went about it. You implied that not only roleplaying, but playing MMO's in general shows a lack of dignity for oneself and that you would not degrade yourself to that level, indirectly saying that the other people here also lack dignity. You and I clearly have a different idea of what shows dignity, and by my definition you are severely lacking. You completely have the right to comment on someone's post, no one said you didn't, but if you're going to make yourself look like an inconsiderate prick, people are most likely going to comment on it. If you don't like people saying your posts are idiotic, then post your opinion in a more respectable manner. This thread was not posted for debate; it is an informational thread, and if you're not offering constructive criticism, why not keep the negativity to yourself? It's just sad you started this argument claiming you were trying to keep your dignity in tact and yet here you are slinging insults and then calling other people immature because you don't like someone pointing out the flaws in your statements. Maybe you should just walk away from this before you make yourself look any worse.

You dont see playing an mmo, or roleplaying for that matter degrading in any way. Too bad that in the real world, most people that play mmos, or roleplay dont admit they do for a reason. I never said I cared about what other people say about my posts, I'm just replying to them. I don't think I'm clever but I definately think that you aren't, especially if you think your making me look bad in any way.

Also, if all posts had to be constructive then this forum would be nearly empty.

Do you also go to football games and tell everyone how pointless a game it is? Participating in a thread of which the subject is something you entirely disagree with is extremely narcissistic. The OP clearly did not ask for your opinion yet you took it upon yourself to start an e-argument. You cannot honestly think that your first post could be taken for anything less than an insult to people who RP.

First impressions are worth everything. Why do I say that? Well because you're right, people don't go around admitting to every person that they meet that they play MMOs or roleplay. But to my friends, if the topic of video games come up, I'll mention that I have played MMOs before. I find no shame in doing so. The reason people don't admit it straight up is because society associates "MMOs" with "no life." The same reason most people you meet who are *** don't introduce themselves as, "Hello, my name is Charlie. I'm ***." Yes, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but when its ALL you have, it's impossible to force yourself to NOT have an opinion about a person.

Also, I'm glad you don't think you're clever. At least we don't have to go through all of the denial and that other BS. And noone here needs to make you look bad. Trust me, you take care of that all by yourself. Plenty of people have weird and/or abstract hobbies and one of them is roleplaying. And I say that not because RPing is stupid (because that is not in the definition of weird or abstract), but because it is a very unique hobby that is reserved for a small portion of people.

No, I do not go to football games and talk about how pointless it is. Not sure where thats coming from anyway, noone said anything about anything being pointless. I do However like most people feel free to call out the bad players. I AM extremely narcissistic, I think we already covered that.
This thread could have been as follows,
ME: Refer to my first post
Disgruntled Replier: Your an *******
But by entertaining the idea that rping isn't outrageously nerdy is what kept me coming back for more.
Thx

It is called a metaphor. In this case this thread is the football game and you referring to role playing as nerdy is like saying how pointless football is. The point being just because you don't agree with something does not mean you have to go share your opinion in their forum. I personally do not find role playing to be all that attractive, but this thread was not started to discuss the social acceptability of role playing in the world. They just want to recruit people who do. Perhaps as a better metaphor showing up at football tryouts and telling everyone football is for meat heads is idiotic and will most likely result in a beating.

I realize by posting this I'm merely feeding into your narcissism, but I'm reassured by the ill effects this no doubt has on your actual life. Good day sir.
