"With the eagerly anticipated FINAL FANTASY XIV drawing ever nearer its beta test phase, we are excited to announce that we will be conducting a closed alpha test—exclusive to our loyal FINAL FANTASY XI users!
Those who have been selected as beta testers can expect to receive further information starting from Monday, March 1.
* The tester website is scheduled to go live on Thursday, March 11.

Those who were not selected in this drawing, fear not, for there will be other opportunities to come. Be sure to stay tuned! "

An exact quote from the vanafest 2010 site in the secret bonus level section. /hurray

I'm just glad something was said involving the word beta with an actual date thrown in there

I dunno that that's necessarily a good thing. "As a reward for your years of faithful patronage, we humbly invite you to download a potentially broken client and help us work out the stability issues of our beta servers in preparation for the beta start. You can expect horrendous lag, frequent disconnects, broken guildleves, terrain glitches, and the occasional glitched NPC that appears fully naked (Rogeyden only). Thank you again for your loyalty."

Well nobody is forcing them to take part, so it can only be looked upon as a good thing, that aside, I'm not sure inviting FF11 players will necessarily mean they will be good beta testers.

It's only not a good thing for people who can't actually seem to grasp what play-testing an alpha/beta build means.

Bummer on the first dibs though. Hopefully the next wave will be people who played XI for 6+ years :(

Just for clarification, I bot, sell gil, buy gil, MPK, party naked through the dunes, power level, play as a Ranger, quit when they nerf it and complain, play as a Beastmaster, quit when then nerf it and complain, make posts for and against RMT, monopolize NMs, create elitist groups, run casinos, steal gil, hack accounts, and stare at you awkwardly with my left eye.

This is not the beta test. FFXI aren't getting dibs on beta, they are just getting a sneak-peak at the alpha. Quite different.

Scratch that, this seems to confirm that it is actually the beta which goes live on March 11, but FFXI subscribers will get an alpha build as early as tomorrow until the beta goes live.

Look like first real test they want to do is the update process( alpha -> beta client).... really hope they fixed it from XI!

The stuff I saw on there sounds like a rough translation from a second-hand source, but I didn't read the entire thread. Is there anything concrete-sounding on there?

If I were going just by the official update on the Vanafest website, I'd read it this way:

Quote:
Those who have been selected as beta testers can expect to receive further information starting from Monday, March 1.

Notifications go out starting March 1, but the client isn't available for download yet.

Quote:
* The tester website is scheduled to go live on Thursday, March 11.

The client becomes available on March 11. I notice it says the tester website, not the beta tester website. Since they were just talking about alpha testers, this could be the website for them. It might not necessarily even be the client download/support site, although I'm not sure what else it could be.

If that's what they meant, then the schedule is more like Mar 1 - 11: Vanafest attendees get their notification. Mar 11: alpha test starts. Beta test is still due to start somewhere off in the hazy future.

That might be pessimistic though. It seems to me that the beta is definitely due to start around now if they want to make a fall/winter release.

My guess is that this will be a very small and controlled version of the game, similar to what they showed at GamesCom. They said they wanted to release some more "small tastes" of the game before beta, right? It's probably just a sample of a guildleve mission or two with some limited grouping options to test the online component.

Here's to hoping that some vids of it end up on the interweb, somehow.

So the March 1st alpha is for Vanafest ppl or for FFXI ppl? Or both? BTW what is considered a FFXI player... a person with an active account? Or who had a active account? Mine is still active but "canceled" once next billing cycle begins.

I believe to get into VanaFest to begin with, you had to have an active FFXI account to participate in the lottery for tickets.

Is this for people who attended vanafest?

Or is it for current FFXI players who applied?

I wonder.

I am personally taking this as a slap in the face from square. I played ffxi for 4 years and if they are seriously excluding people who singed up that still don't have open accounts, i'd take it as an insult. It's already a big enough slap in the face that they haven't updated the ffxiv website for 3 months. Way to make yourselves look classy SE.

Calm doowwwwn. The Vanafest invites are for a short closed alpha test that we didn't even know existed until today. The beta test is going ahead later using the open application process.

I don't understand where people are getting this info.

They specifically stated that people that filled out an application that were FFXI players would get a chance to participate before anyone else. (That was why everyone cheered)

The 3.11 date is for the actual Beta site that opens.
March 1st is when the first set of invites go out.

Anyone that attended the Vanafest is guaranteed an invite.

Unless they changed the information as of... YESTERDAY this should still be the case.

If you filled out an Beta application and put in your POL info, there is a good chance you will get an invite ahead of those that didnt.

I remember it being said.
FFXI players get priority for Beta acceptance.
There was a section in teh application that asked for your POL ID.
Logically if you entered in that information Square would be able to determine if you indeed play or have played FFXI no?

It's true that that SE never specifically said that the XI players chosen had to be currently playing. (unless I'm mistaken) Your POL info would say how long you played or if you'd played at all.

One can hope anyway.

I'd like to see a link to where that was said. As I recall, there was no priority system for the beta. You sign up, give some information, and you're placed into a pool that will be drawn from at random with each intake.

I was just trying to clarify what I read. The closed alpha for Ffxi users is picked partly from the group that was at vanafest and then supplemented with invited users from the sign ups.

First wave of closed beta information is going to be sent out march 1st, which will probably be to set things up for the start of closed beta which appears to be scheduled to get going on the 11th.

Also, why wouldn't they give the opportunity to start their beta tests with hard core fans that attended the vanafest? It makes perfect sense to do so, as the people that didn't go have not made any particularly visible effort to support SE or FFXI beyond playing the game.

No offense, but saying "I'm a loyal dedicated fan who would do anything for SE" is just a lot of talk. You can't run a business based on someone saying "Trust me". This is why there was a 10 page legal document about the NDA instead of a text line saying "Plz don't post dis stuff on 4chan". they really can't take a person's word for it. Especially over the internet.

Quote:

that line is on the official page. http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/event/vanafes2010/index.html

would be pretty bad of them to give people a pre alpha game test chance, but then go and say "lol but you weren't chosen for the beta".

Okay, guys, the thread has clearly moved on. Kirbster made his point. Rating people down and then posting it was you to try to look cool is really immature. Let's not turn this into an unnecessary flame catastrophe.

As for the ambiguity of the beta testing, I think the best thing we can do is wait until March 11th for more clarification. Until then I think it's safe to assume only invites will be sent out from now until then and I wouldn't believe that it is just for Vanafest attendees.

It was said during the videocast. I wish I took a screenshot. My Japanese is a bit rusty so I cannot quote it word for word. I just remember seeing the quick sign they had stating it. In IRC during the event someone confirmed it as well (I think it was TokyoRose).

Lets just clarify what we know so far:

*FFXI players have a priority for Beta Acceptance. If you posted your POL info on your application then you have a better chance to get in.
(Said during Vanafest Video Broadcast)

*March 11th is when the Beta "Forum" (That was the word used I believe) goes live.
(Said during Vanafest Video Broadcast)

*Vanafest 2010 attendees get invited to a "Special closed Alpha session" starting March 1st (Today).
(They used the word "Alpha" for this for some reason.)
(Said during Vanafest Video Broadcast)

*There will be many occasions to get beta access if you do not get picked initially.
(From EN Vanafest Twitter post)

*Beta Applications are submitted via the Square Enix Account system (Web), make sure your email is valid! Linking your POL ID to the system might be a good idea as well if you have not done so already.

Information that needs to be clarified:

*Applicants that did not attend Vanafest will be invited on March 1st as well.

*Having an active POL account determines eligibility or not.
(I did not recall hearing this, but everything was going so fast it was hard to keep track of what was going on.)

*Beta is PC Only.
