Beta Character QuestionFollow

I currently play FFXI and have been playing since the 360 release. I didn't get in on the beta for this game but was wondering how the beta characters work since this is all new to me. Do you get to keep your character once the game goes "live"? Or do you start from scratch like the rest of us that didn't get in the beta? I'm just wondering if on day one, we will see high level players because they have been playing already for 6+ months.

Thanks.

1)No
2)Yes

Don't worry about it, SE won't let people get advantage like that. Why would they let people advance in a game like this without even paying for it? That's how I came to that conclusion, anyway. Oh, and they said you won't keep them.

Nope.

Beta is for testing only. All the ones I have been are wiped before luanch of the game.
Some MMO's have a headstart which is a week or weekend headstart of the game going live. It's ussally just for per-orders though.

Glad to hear that. I was on 360 chat last night witha few linkshell buddies and they all thought that beta testers would get to keep their characters and have a headstart on the rest of us.

they may get to keep their chars, but most definitely they will not be able to play on live servers with everyone else.

Carrying over your experience points from Beta into Retail seems like a very **** move. It's called Beta for a reason - it's for TESTING purposes.

I hope Square Enix decides not to let beta players keep their characters when XIV goes retail.

If there were emails going out, I have a reeeeally good feeling those emails would state that your character will be deleted at the end of the testing.
Call it a hunch but I'm certain it's what they might say

Doesn't XI still have its beta chars on a private server?

Just the fact that they are in the beta gives them tiny head start.

To answer the question though, they will be wiped clean. I think I read that as part of the beta agreement when applying.

Square-Enix will not allow Beta testers to keep their characters, this is a real beta, for real testing. Betas that allow you to keep your characters are not real, they're a publicity stunt or for stress testing.

It always irritates me when I see people getting upset their beta character won't carry over. If you're concerned about it, you should never have signed up in the first place.

The people who you were talking to on 360 may have been a part of the 360 beta for FFXI. That was a bit different, as the game was already completed, they were just porting it to a new platform. When that happened, yes, they could keep their characters. But that's really only because the PC and PS2 users already had a headstart.

As everyone has said, you character is erased. However Square may transfer over the character, and reset it back to 1, reserving your name. Either way, the knowledge you get from BETA let's you lvl faster then others.

^^^ This I could easily see happening, and I really wouldn't mind.
I didn't apply for the beta (I'm planning on playing on PS3) and have nothing to gain by this, but I think it would be cool if you could keep your characters name from the beta. Even if it means that by the time I do get to play, the name(s?) I plan on using are taken.

I thought I remember my friend telling me that she was able to keep her character's name from the FFXI NA PC beta? I could be wrong...

Of course this is probably going to be a totally different situation since in her case, the game technically was already released; just not in NA yet.

This is true. I already had been playing quite some time on PS2, was a level 60 at the time, so there was no reason to keep the beta character anyhow. But they did offer that. Again, that's only because the game had been out for several years.

Allowing beta characters to be transferred to real servers post-beta would be completely unfair. They already will have an extreme leg up because of knowledge of mobs, areas, disciplines and their abilities, and most of all crafting.

Imagine knowing before everyone the best farming spots and most profitable/useful crafts? Wow.

Keep in mind they have said the beta will only be about 10% of the completed game. There will also be no market setup immediately, you won't be able to just go farm and post things on auction for a higher level to buy. There will also be an open beta, should give anyone who really wants it about the same advantage as anyone who starts earlier in beta.. unless nobody posts their findings once it is no longer protected by the NDA.

lol?

Anyway, the JPz got a headstart on everyone before XI was released in the US (and they still do with subsequent FF titles if memory serves) so why would it be that big a deal for people to get to carry over characters from beta?

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

I think it's a big deal because Beta players may be taking advantage of bugs or loop holes to improve their character, or even obtain items that get removed from the game before the retail release. Instead of trying to fix/adjust those characters it's easier to just wipe them clean and start with the retail release as a baseline.

This makes sense.

FFXI beta testers from PC/PS2 could keep their characters, but that wasn't until SE offered the Welcome Back program a few years later. You could restore your characters and they were put on Asura server. The beta server was Cactaur.

It says in the beta invite emails that there are no plans for ALPHA test characters to be carried over into the official version of the game.

Although it says specifically Alpha, I would imagine beta would be the same, but I could see them allowing you to carry over your characters name but nothing else.

Speaking of names carrying over, I see in the new screenshots that surnames are indeed in the game. I wonder if they devised a scheme for players to bring names over from XI, or if they're just leaving it up to us to make the surname our old server name?

I also wonder if surnames will be *required*
