i wonder what the secret item is.

something akin to an empress band, or perhaps a mini Shiva for your mog house that probably doesn't even exist this time around.

Its probably something cosmetic, like an item from FFXIII appearing in the game either as furniture or as an armor/weapon piece that has zero stats. I doubt it will be something that actually affects the game, especially since the code is being handed out in limited supply (not all PS3 FFXIII games will have the code and none of the current JP FFXIII games have it in it).

One thing I am hoping, and I think how it was worded alludes to this, that the promotional code can be activated on a different SEID than the one you use to sign up for PS3 beta. The last thing I want to do is have that code tied to an ID I don't intend to use for my main and can't get the promotional item. But like I said how its worded makes me think you can add it to the main later.

I'd haveliked better if 13 included the ability to get in to Alpha/Beta, but free **** is free **** :)

I figured I'd get to GameStop a little late, thinking they'd be packed, only to find out that they closed 5 minutes before I got there due to lack of turnout, so I have to wait till later.

Open the case and hand soeone else the disk, tell them they can play first. They should hopefully be distracted putting the game in the system long enough that you can pilfer the code and hide it somewhere :)

GameSpot gave it a 8.5.
GameTrailers gave it a 8.6.
IGN gave it a 8.9.

Don't copy paste.

I had the same problem, it has room for 20 digits without spaces but copy pasta adds spaces.

After you register the code from the insert on the members page, you get a 20 digit code. Enter that one in the beta app page.

So just to clarify....
If you use the code you get a chance at the beta on PS3 and an in-game item for FFXIV? Not either, both. Correct?

You get the in game item, and you can select either PC or PS3 Beta with the code inputted in the Beta application however I don't think you will get anywhere if you choose to click the PC option . Also just a side note you need to put in the game code via S.E. Members account to get the FFXIV PROMO CODE. Hope that helps ^^.

True enough on the opinion... however sometimes when you hear from 10 different places that a game is horrible and only rates a 2/100, generally speaking they are correct and you should listen ;)

This is only true if you happen to have similar/same preference with those 10 places, and/or if their reasonings of why the game is bad are based on facts (e.g.: game freezes a lot, strongest spell costing 500MP but only 10 damage stronger than 100MP spell, etc) rather than preference (e.g.: not liking the story, not liking the characters, etc). Unfortunately, most reviews are based very heavily on personal preference rather than the facts. There's nothing wrong with it, but it just means less value to myself.

First off, the metacritic score is an 82, and GameTrailers (whom I trust) gave it an 8.6.

I think the main problem with it is that it doesn't live up to the Final Fantasy name but is certainly a decent RPG in its own right. It's severely lacking the draw of older FF games, but the mechanics are excellent. Personally, I find the "retry" button in the battle a wonderful addition that I have yet to use. How many times have you messed up during a boss fight and had to wait to die, reload the game, and run to the fight again?

So the game is quite a bit of fun in terms of gameplay and has certainly added a number of mechanics to help modernize an old-school-style RPG. But don't expect this game to have the FF magic I'm sure we'll see in XIV.

Also: Yay PS3 beta code! I hope we all get in this week!

I agree, but that's also where the problem is with any game that is part of a series. People always have different interpretation of "living up to the series name" and "draw of the older game of the series" which makes reviews turn into simple personal preference. So for me, I try my best to put the old titles behind in the past and not cloud my judgment/enjoyment of the newer titles.

I feel like my last post was interpreted negatively, or at least Kierra did. I had no idea what anyone was rating XIII nor do I care. I have the ability to rate games for myself and I generally expect nothing bad from a Square Enix title. The "2/100" was mostly a joke and generally when something scores incredibly low in several different places there is a good reason for it.. such as the game is not complete but they released it anyway. I don't think 10 unique sources will all have the same biases, and a low rating all around would really only manifest itself if there are major issues with a game.

And if I ever were to listen to a review, it would have to be from Yahtzee

I do have friends I talk to about games and play games with. They pick this up and tell me its not worth it so I'm not shelling out. Doesn't mean I don't have an opinion or that it might differ from someone else, but when its someone you know and who knows you... you take it a bit more seriously.

On a side note with all this code hype...

You really wanted that in-game item that badly? If you do manage to get into beta (and it won't be because of this code) I hope you don't turn out disappointed winding up with a $60 in-game item for something you don't want to play.

Yeah and uh, last time I checked on Game Ranking it had close to 90% rank. If that sucks you must only have like 1 game in your library...

Seriously I think the lowest score it's gotten was an 8.5. Also the game rocks, too bad you'll miss out, can't say I care though.

FFXIII actually has the lowest ratings of any numbered FF, unless you count the DS versions of I, II and III. That's pretty bad.

The reason reviews don't hold much is because they aren't all that expensive. *rubs grease from hands*

The voice and graphics are expected. Pretty much anything coming out these days has this. Standard. I'm more interested in storyline and gameplay and how they interact. I don't like linear RPG. If I'm feeling like action I get action games that focus on it. I'll probably try it when they've finished it tomorrow, but it just doesn't seem like something I would enjoy.

*edit* Lightning and Snow? They couldn't have come up with anything better than this? Well at least you get to pick who you play with right? Right???

IMHO I think FFXIII was rated as "low" as it was by so many places because of how strong the history of the series it, and how high the expectation on this game are. With all the delays it faced, people made it out to be THE Final Fantasy.

I almost feel like it's FF VIII all over again. VII was amazing, and VIII was different, so it didn't review as well. I'm enjoying it, and for me in a single player RPG, that's the only thing that counts.

It got a 39/40 from Famitsu. No single review should really sway your opinion, but seeings a score like this from a magazine that has only given 13 40/40 scores and 19 39/40 scores in the 24 years its been around makes me assume the game can't be bad. Makes me think it must be pretty **** good in fact!

I'm loving it so far. The battle system is incredible and if it's any indication of what's to come in FFXVI then I'm sold. The story is pretty good, slightly predictable but still interesting enough to keep my attention and the voice acting has been top notch so far. I definitely recommend it as a buy.

If you get this on PS3 and have HDTV with HDMI cable on 1080p like what I got, These graphics blow "standard" away. I mean the "normal" gameplay looks better then most other games best cutscenes. The true cutscenes in this game look so good, in certain parts of the fireworks CS, I could swear they used a real person for Snow.

And what I meant by full voice-overs: they are top notch through out the entire game, everything is voiced, other then reading from your datalog and tutorials.

Gameplay and battles start off basic and kind of easy because like most rpgs you don't have much to choose from but keep playing and it gets a lot more involved.

I'd consider player reviews before magazine and website reviews. Generally if I want any kind of reliable rating, I look at the review and user ranking averages on GameFAQs, because these total the ratings of hundreds or thousands of players. If you're looking at a website or magazine, you're typically getting the review of... one player. Frequently one player who didn't even finish the game.

On that note, FFXII is the lowest rated FF since the NES era, which is pretty intuitive to me.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

You know what they say... Everyone's a critic. The internet has made this doubly true.
I skimmed through some of the reviews of 12 on Gamefaqs. Some of the complaints had valid points. Some were just idiotic and unreasonable. "The license system was too complicated to get used to" Wtf?

Personally, overall, I thought XII was a great game. How some people can try to write a serious review and give the story in this game a 1/10 is just beyond me.

As for XIII, I'm reserving judgment until I get a little further in.

Sorry if this has been answered already but I got my beta code but already submitted an application for the beta before. If I try to do another one with my same SE ID using this new code will it count as a repeat submission and therefore be invalidated?

Also I'm loving the game so far although I still think Kingdom Hearts is better.

Hmm, I have registered my EU version via the leaflet that came in the box at the EU members site, but I have yet to see any emails about the promotional code or anything.

My question, did the EU ussers get shafted? or is their EU site no fully operational, (as it looks like) and they aren't sending codes via email for ingame items and such.

I generally tend to reserve my opinion on any game until I play it, regardless of ratings.

I could list a handful of games that I feel are severely overrated; mostly the "popular" stuff like Halo 3, MW2, AC, the stuff that everyone makes out to be something so totally awesome that if I don't buy it, my brain will explode. the games are good, I enjoy them, but I don't think they're froth-at-the-mouth best-game-ever material, since I tend to prefer RPG and RTS for an overall gaming experience, and I only play FPS/Brawler games when I need a break from RPG/RTS or just want something to play co-op or to get my twitch itch out.

On the other hand, I can think of games that have been total bombs in reviews; Quest 64, FF:MQ, games that were admittedly poorly designed and clearly feel like the people who made them were just trying to toss something together haphazardly, but while I thought the story was severely lacking, I still got a decent chunk of enjoyment out of the game.

It also seems, to me at least, that when it comes to "popular sources" writing game reviews, priority is as follows:

Advertisement > Graphics > What did we expect from the title > Did we super-hype how awesome this game would be > Did we super-hype a prequel to this game > Do we have a history of mocking or disliking the publisher (or conversely, do our mouths have a soft spot for the genatalia of this publisher) > Is this a game that requires more than 30 minutes worth of gameplay to enjoy properly > Can we make fun of the dialogue/characters/case? > Ease of learning controls/Gameplay > Replay value > Story

Conversely, I tend to take a different approach when "rating" my games.

Did it keep me entertained for more than 20 hours in total > Controls > Fun Factor > Story > Replay Value > Graphics

Everyone has their own weight with which they value games they play, and they're all different. Games I like may not be games you like and vice versa. So to take the word of someone who is paid (And part of that money comes from the people who made the game anyway) to write reviews is to only see their opinion, weighted by income.

If you took a copy of Superman 64 and repackaged it on a DVD with the words "Bungie" and "Blizzard" on the case, it would get 9-10 out of 10 across the board.

I don't think there's any difference between the EU and US, being as I got the code too. I hope we get some info on the PS3 beta soon!! /squeeel

EDIT: Oh and as for FFXIII, I'm really enjoying it personally. The battle system is awesome and the fights can get really intense, and I really the added incentive of trying to be efficient and quick to finish a battle to get higher ratings. I only just got Odin so I'm not that far in yet, but I'm personally really looking forward to what happens as I go on.

I think the linear complaint is total BS, because if you zoom out of any FF dungeon-ish map, it's all relatively straight line, but with battles and OMGDIRECTIONALTURNS I really havent thought about the linear nature at all. I think that on the whole, the VA is great and the lip syncing is much better than in the past too.

My only complaint is that Hope is a douche, but what can you do? I kinda-ish like Vanille's personality, but I suppose the voice acting doesn't do it much justice really.
