Hmm, I always thought EB Games and GameStop were the same company. I only mull it over because I pre-ordered with EB Games a long while ago.

I find EB Games will pre-order just about anything for you if you walk in with $5 and a game title they can at least find in their system -- whether it's anywhere near completion or not seems to make no difference to them ;)

Sorry, thought this might be news to someone. Picked up my copy of FFXIII and headed back to work, when I got a call from GS saying preorders were available. Too bad the preorder won't specify in-store pickup.

Yeah, I went in to pick up FF13 and they asked if I want to preorder anything else. I said that the things I was interested in were FF14, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, Portal 2, and Mirror's Edge 2.

And the guy said that they can put a preorder down and have release dates for everything but ME2. An interesting thing was that despite SE's assertion of late 2010, GS has a release date for 14 pegged in early January. Granted I'll take SE's word over GS' word, but thought that was amusing regardless. Also happy to hear (if it's true) that SC2 and Portal 2 are pegged for later this year as well.

That's really strange. I have never seen Gamestop post a date that was after the actual date of release. Is it possible that the game will be released in Japan in 2010 and everywhere else in early January? I would normally completely agree with you on trusting SE's word over Gamestop, but this might require further research on my part before I go taking anyone's word.

For what it's worth, SE Devs have stated in interviews that their plan is for a simultaneous NA/JP/EU release.

They've also stated that they are on track and confident for their plan of a '10 release. I'm confident they'll succeed Smiley: smile

To clarify on Gamestop's release date: it's 12/31/10. This is a placeholder date, meaning that Square Enix has not given a projected quarter or exact date of release, which goes in line with the whole "2010" thing. Last year, titles such as Dragon Age and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 had placeholder dates before actual dates (both at one point were 12/31/09).

Ah, I see. I never encountered one of those while working there but I quit in 2008 so that could be why. Maybe the employee didn't understand this concept and assumed that since the date given was 12/31/10 the game would naturally be "shipped" on that date and therefore available in early January. I'll check with my friend just to be sure, but thank you both for the clarifications.

I've never had a problem getting a game or expansion pack on release day. So unless the preorder comes with some in-game item, I don't really understand the purpose. Have some people actually not been able to find a game on release day?

Its more common for smaller towns to not have enough because they cant run the risk ordering too many. Also my Gamestop generally has a separate line for people with pre-orders for big name games, I remember for WOTG the line for non preorders was like 20 people long, felt pretty good getting to skip all of them because I pre-ordered it :).

This does tend to happen in certain locations. Working at Gamestop, I encountered many people who felt as you do, and one day they came in looking for a brand new copy of Gears of War 2 and we were sold out except for reserved copies. I have never seen such fits in a videogame store from grown men. It's really a matter of convenience and price. I reserve at the Gamestop near my house because not only am I guarunteed a copy, but I can just walk in a pick it up without any hassle and I'm helping out my friends who work there. Some places you can be sure if you can't find it in one store, it will be in another. But if you're used to unreliable, small-town, deficient stores, you'll probably pre-order.

Whatever happened to bonus items for pre-ordering a game? Maybe it's just the fact I live in California, but I have no reason to pre-order as there will always be a copy available in-store somewhere. The only problem I've ever had out here was getting my hands on WotG, as gamestop sold more copies than they were shipped and other stores didn't even receive their shipment. Not saying other places around the world have it just as easy, but how about we get some incentive to go with it? :)

As it stands right now, I head over to Fry's (frys.com) and pick up new releases.. often times at a discount. XIII is $52.99 + tax (which came out to $58.something). It's not a big savings, but every little bit counts.

20 people!!?? That's crazy talk. I would LOVE to see a single soul who plays FFXI where I live. At my local EB in Sydney (Aus.) I was there immediately after opening...and was the only pre-order in store. The guy took one look at the cover and gasped "Oh WTF, people actually play this? I thought that game died years ago..." and saw others in the store grimace :( Needless to say I found a new local EB. Stupid heathens who only love their silly pew-pews.

Well obviously, of course as a corporation they'll be happy to taken in hundreds of thousands of preorders many months in advance of the game being released (in many cases before there's even a release date). They get to take that giant pool of money, invest it, and make a profit off of it before they actually have to go out and order copies of the game.

I won't preorder this until it's available for in-store pickup. GS doesn't charge anything for this, unless you don't pick up the item.

I'll put $5 on a preorder, regardless of bonus item or not. It's an item I'm buying anyway, so it just guarantees my copy will be there, and I can either pay $5 now and $55 later or $60 later.

Now I won't put money down in March for a game that won't be out till December... Usually I'll preorder 1-2 weeks in advance if there's no bonus item and 2-4 if there is. My GH:WT second drum pedal and my Blackfathom Singularity Projector in Mass Effect 2 are quite spiffy, and the woman is looking forward to getting her bonuses for her Pokemon SoulSilver on Sunday.

At any rate, there's no benefit that not preordering gives that preordering does not (unless you count "Having $5"), and having the receipt on my fridge makes me less likely to forget about games I wanted and their release dates, but yeah... Despite my shopping list of gaes I want, they won't be out till between Q3 2010 and later, so I see no sense in putting money down -now-.

Gamestop tends to ESTIMATE release dates. So the RD on FFXIV there is not final, nor confirmed. It is made by Gamestop based on various "intelligence" estimates (such as the level of completion for the game, how far along it is, and other factors).

Also, I'm not gonna preorder from Gamestop - I plan on buying it on Steam if it becomes available there. Otherwise, I'll just get a copy from Amazon.
