I can't read Japanese, so I'll take your word for it. Yeah, "A fool and his money are soon parted". Some people really do have more money than they know what to do with. I'm not surprised FFXIV alpha tickets are selling for $1000. I think it's crazy too, but there are crazy people in this world. :D

O.o

I like to think of myself as a decently devoted fan of Square Enix.
At least I did...until I read that. The very fact we're posting in this forum puts us all somewhere in the core fandom, and even we can't really relate to that.

XD I would pay to see pikko literally reach through the internet to slap someone.
(A much better use of $1240 dollars)

Baby bento slap fights with Pikko's minions manning the popoto cannons in the back (fresh from the garden!)

I think I saw something like that on Spike a couple of nights ago...

Popoto is a very taru word. It was one of those things that just seemed to fit when I was skilling up my cooking in Windurst.

Edit: waaaait a second...

poi + potato = popoito = popoto
poi = kalo = taro = taru

taru + popoto = TARUS ARE FROM HAWAII!

(no wonder you like them so much)

Yeah, I agree. I always used to be ****** I couldn't grow popotoes. I should just use that word IRL instead of potato, it just sounds better.

In case someone didn't make the connection, it wasn't 124,000 JPY for just the FFXIV Alpha invite.
It was for the FFXIV Alpha invite and everything linked to it. This included the idiot's FFXI account (75 NIN/75 SAM/75 RED) and his Square-Enix account.

I'm still somewhat amazed that some crazed otaku payed that much.
When people were linking the auction around this time last night on 2ch, the highest bid was only ~68,000 JPY.

To be fair, I did buy FF13 for the code as well as the game. I would have waited to buy it if it wasn't in limited quantity.

Just for clarification, I bot, sell gil, buy gil, MPK, party naked through the dunes, power level, play as a Ranger, quit when they nerf it and complain, play as a Beastmaster, quit when then nerf it and complain, make posts for and against RMT, monopolize NMs, create elitist groups, run casinos, steal gil, hack accounts, and stare at you awkwardly with my left eye.

Why do people do this? I mean, when you get the final version it's gonna be so different from the beta because everything is going to be adjusted. The 24/7 you spend on the beta is gonna go down the drain in about 7-8 months. Some people just dont know what to do with there tax returns.

I wouldnt mind paying for a ticket, although I would never spend over $20 for it...

I don't support the idea of selling accounts or things like alpha/beta invites because it strikes me as unscrupulous, but I'm also not the least bit surprised that someone would spend that much. Not everyone lives paycheck to paycheck and for some people, $1000 or so is a night out on the town. I've known people like that...they aren't evil or reckless and they're typically far from stupid. They just have a surplus of money after their needs are met.

I doubt the official game will be radically different from the beta. I can only think the people who would do this are ones that want to learn everything about the game to achieve a world first achievement such as being first person to highest level.

Basically they figure out what's the quickest way to power level and when the official game is launched they just repeat what they did in the beta and claim they are first person to reach highest level. It's stupid, but some people do this.

It happened in WoW:
nyhm-of-drekthar-eu-first-to-level-80

He basicly killed mobs that don't drop any loot, which had a very quick respawn rate and had a person heal him who wasn't in his party. This person had to have used the beta to figure this out. You don't just stumble across it.

I had a Burning Crusade beta Key ... I was offered $300 for it :O

In fact, I played in a pseudo-tournament to get it. A lot of other people playing in the tournament were just doing it so that they could earn a beta key and sell it. Never checked if anyone actually did sell it, but I'm not surprised that there is a market for this kind of thing.

There are enough people out there with trust funds and no cents sense.

$300 was actually cheap for WoW expansion beta keys. On the WoW boards a link to an ebay auction was posted where someone had had bid over $2000 for a 6-month beta key.

Honestly, I could only figure that it would be a gold seller/RMT. If they get a huge jump on learning the expansion content, then they are better prepared to grind items and currency to meet the likely big demand after an expansion release.

At least that is what I am hoping it is. I would hope it is not a legit player that would shell out two grand because they just couldn't wait.

Maybe I'll go buy it just to get slapped by Pikko.
How about that =p

Seriously though. It's not a bad idea to sell your account like that. I mean you're probably going to quit and play FFXIV anyway and some fruitcake will buy it for sure.

Is there any confirmation that the amount was actually payed? I could go on eBay and bid $10,000,000 for a piece of cheese, doesn't mean I'll be forced to pay it; the worse they could do is ban me. Could be someone just playing around. While, I wouldn't be surprised if someone was actually willing to pay that much, you have to take that into consideration with online auctions.

Well it seems 124,000 Yen (~$1,312 USD) for a FFXIV alpha account actually wasn't that much after all...

Earlier today, someone just sold their FFXIV Alpha test account for 188,000 YEN (~$1,989 USD). Dude had been re-listing it for awhile now at 200,000 YEN starting bid, but no one was biting. Seem he only overshot it by a little though since when he finally lowered the starting bid to 120,000 YEN, 20 bids later, the auction ended at 188,000 YEN!

Hopefully this is now the end of people selling their accounts for crazy amounts (or at all for that matter). After all, the FFXIV Alpha build will supposedly be released in a few days, and the value of such accounts should drop significantly at that point. I am still somewhat surprised that Yahoo Auctions doesn't have rules against such listings.

If Square Enix were to say something, I'm sure Yahoo! would pull the auctions off the site. Too late now that the accounts have sold, but you get the point.

I'm not sure I agree. Since this particular auction was first listed 12 days ago, and re-listed from the exact same URL multiple times, I'm sure Square Enix knew about it.

To put things into perspective, Yahoo Auctions Japan appears to currently have 4000+ RMT-related auctions at the moment in their RPG section, so I'm leaning more towards Yahoo Japan allowing such auctions to take place and not listening to complaints. Considering Square Enix's stance on such things, I'm sure they did complain, but Yahoo didn't act on it.

I would say the oppisite myself, the excitement for some to want to play will be even more than ever knowing the client is out there to play.

That's because a lot of times when you actually try to GIVE feedback on the game the Devs are real jerks when it's feedback that suggest the game is not perfect and adjustments need to be made. My God I remember trying to talk to the Vanguard devs during beta and the game turned out horrendous at release. I'm glad I didn't stick around for it.

Playing Vanguard as long as I did, I can assure you it ended up the way it did because the devs listened to feedback more than they should have (regarding classes) instead of focusing on the real problems in the game.
