That first screenshot reveals a ton of new information about battles, when you look closely. Some of my notes:

1. There's a world map in the upper right corner displaying mobs and npc's, and it also has physical features of the landscape (unlike the compass from ffxi)

2. There are timer bars underneath each ability. This can be inferred from the fact that the bar under #6 looks to be recharging. There are also 10 abilities, BUT there are multiple bars that can be set (notice the "1" to the left of the bar).

3. The pugilist has MP, and it is not full. Too little information to speculate, but this fact does seem to allay some fears regarding the switching of classes between battles; if all classes have some innate mp, then you will have some to cure yourself between battles.

4. There is a on screen icon to initiate attacks, separate from the hotbar. There are also 4 other icons that i can't figure out; One kind of looks like a social icon, one looks like a character icon, the other 2 i don't know.

5. Send/receive is back! R0 baby! (just kidding).

6. The chat panel is more like modern MMO's, with separate channels for battle and talk/actions. It will be nice to not have to filter out a ton of stuff just so you can communicate with your party.

7. Um....The game looks ABSOLUTELY gorgeous!

love all these pictures (theres more on the site these are from that have tons of armor/weapon shots).

i'm still a little worried about the interface. it seems like it's going to clutter the screen the same way wow does (not as badly i'm sure). also, not feelin the serif fonts for the interface/names/etc. hopefully there will be settings for all of this.

Interesting that the mini-map shows the locations of mobs as well.

My feelings on this are conflicted. While it does seem somewhat necessary if we will be constantly moving around to battle, I feel like this could also cause player-collision as well. It will be interesting to see how this balances out.

Also, does anyone think that the mini-map will also show the locations of NM's and the like? If I had to guess, I would say and hope no. One of my favorite aspects of the game was running into something I didn't know required an alliance to take down and then get destroyed by it in one hit.

You could see mobs on the FF11 mini map also, granted it was way too small and a waste of time.

Casters couldn't detect mobs though.

I would have liked to see coordinates in the top right hand corner, but I guess there is plenty of time for them to add stuff like that.

OMG, amazing detail on the monsters in the game play screen shot. This game going to have some scary monsters... I love it.

The first screen shot only confirms once again that this games graphics are not only amazing for even todays single player rpgs but the standards are unrealistically high for an MMO.

Man, I bet the high poly version of those monsters for normal map generation were easily 20 million polys.. How in the **** are they doing this level of graphic quality on a **** MMO.

The games going to have 3 suits of armor and 4 bad guys at this rate! Either that or they have an amazingly huge number of VERY ******* talented people all bunched up in the same office area and feeding them noodles for breakfast lunch and dinner for 5 years straight.

o.O
The graphics standards are much too high for an mmo. I sense slavery going on over there...

Square Enix is such a **** tease with their new beloved baby MMO that is waiting to be born. If you have played Final Fantasy XIII, it is the same engine that will be used to run Final Fantasy XIV. I am now 20 hours into the game and it's is absolutely amazing. Storyline. Each character's background story. The music. I could go on and on. But Final Fantasy XIII is basically a preview into what XIV will be like. The CGI in XIII is seamless. It can go from gameplay to CGI with no pause back to combat. I really have high hopes for the cutscenes and storyline in XIV. I cannot wait. But there are a lot of RPGs coming out for PS3 this year so I'm sure they'll keep me busy until then

The beasts shown in the screenshot above are Ajattara on the right and Peiste on the left. We can see the Pugilist has the left one targeted.

The battle log roughly says: Ajattara attacks Destiny Katayama from behind, but Destiny Katayama predicted the attack. Earthrender (the ability the Pugilist is using, best translation I could come up with) could not be used because Peiste is out of range. Destiny Katayama dodges the attack.

It also makes a case for "you can make a caster/melee hybrid through the 'growth of your character'" thing tanaka was talking about. Insomuch that it's not a pugilist that turned into a mage and back, it's a pugilist that has some magic in her ********

A melee soloing two Pieste would be lulz in FFXI. even decent challenge ones would be nasty XD
I guess the fighting will be easier or these guys are much weaker than the ffxi counterparts.

edit: btw for those that dont know pieste are one of the cooler mobs in FFXI. They have a move where their eyes glow red it stun lock petrifies anyone who faces the monster. The coolest part is if you have enfeebling skill you can cast blind on them and it nullifies the glowing red eyes making it safe to look at them again.

These guys are NASTY in ffxi. awesome mobs no doubt and testimony to FFXI having unique monsters all over the game that REALLY feel different when you fight them. :)

That UI is almost identical to the UI in LoTRO. I'm not quite sure how I feel about that since I actually prefer the cleaner look of FFXI. Hopefully those are macro icons and not a "hotbar".

But holy crap this game is going to be pretty. I'm foreseeing a computer upgrade in my future, haha.

Just out of curiosity, how would a hotbar work on a console version of the game? I've never seen or used one before.

Good point, it probably wouldn't. Hotbars generally rely on clicking icons or key-mapping them to dozens of keyboard buttons. I'm hoping those numbers under the icons are just like FFXI macro books. *Prays for a much better macro coding system*

Will prob be selectable with the D-pad and/or number buttons on a keyboard.

But keyboards were never required in the past so it seems to me like a hotbar wouldn't be used for console-translated games.

Just a guess here but it looks like the new UI is moveable.
There are a few elements that are not lined up suggesting that perhaps they were moved by the user. They also look to be in a different place than previous screenies that included the interface.

This screen has 8 lines for the text box
This one has 5 and a half which would suggest that it is scalable.

PS: I put together an image gallery of the entire Game Watch Impress FFXIV directory using a Flashget script.

I pray, I pray, I pray this is what the game will look like at night time. I've always had an issue with night time effects done correctly. That 4th ss is beautiful and my favorite. I just don't want that fake lighting look for the afterhours. The sky needs to be that dark when there are thick clouds. Man, it looks so good. /drool

That first screen was from Gamescom right? Remember they made it abundantly clear that it was not the final product and will probably be revised before beta. Regardless, they'll probably make it scalable anyway like they did in FFXI. It makes sense I think. =)

I guess we'll be able to turn off a lot of stuff like effects and filters. I played Aion a bit and it looked amazing with everything turned on, but managed to run smoothly with some options off.
It's all about the level of customization we will have.

Also yes, the Crystal Tool is an amazing engine. FF13 looks beautiful and polished, I can't wait to see how it fairs in much lager game like XIV.

OMG, stupid melee attack from behind!

Just kidding, I play WoW and that diagram looks weird. In WoW lot of monsters have cleave or cone attack ability so melee would be behind, plus monster can’t parry when attacking from behind. But it looks as if in the diagram the melee are blocking the monster as well as shielding the casters and range. I wonder if FFXIV will have more intelligent monsters where if you don't block them they will eat your casters.

The two peistes she's fighting have differnt names. One is just "peiste" but the other is "ajattara."

Also, the log reads as follows:
The ajattara attacks Destiny Katayama from behind, but Destiny Katayama anticipated it.
The peiste is out of range, couldn't activate <weapon skill that's something like "earth rend">.
Destiny Katayama parries the attack.

Oh crap, someone already said all this. Now I feel stupid.
