Is this CG stuff from the opening? Just a guess.

Definitely is. The burning malboro and the dragon fighting the airship are both seen in the opening movie (trailer from Vanafest 2010).

The relatively low numbers have me a tad worried that they're going to cap FFXIV at 56kbps as well.

Just out of curiosity, how would a hotbar work on a console version of the game? I've never seen or used one before.

Know anyone with White Knight Chronicles? It's more or less a blend of FFXI's interface and some of the more popular PC clickfest MMOs.

The two peistes she's fighting have differnt names. One is just "peiste" but the other is "ajattara."

Also, the log reads as follows:
The ajattara attacks Destiny Katayama from behind, but Destiny Katayama anticipated it.
The peiste is out of range, couldn't activate <weapon skill that's something like "earth rend">.
Destiny Katayama parries the attack.

Oh crap, someone already said all this. Now I feel stupid.

Interesting. I wonder if a monster is "out of range" of your weapon skill do you lose the TP used to activate it? Pretty much, do you waste the weapon skill?

Lag could really ***** that up. E.g. If you have a lag spike or something and you think that your character is within range, but the server thinks you aren't so your weapon skill is wasted.

Hopefully, you'll just get an "out of range" error message and nothing happens to your TP. (Hope all this made sense as I've been at work all day and my brain is melted)

That music on the FFXIV site is just... wow! Too awesome. If that's the battle theme then my hopes for the soundtrack for this game just shot up ten fold.

While I certainly wouldn't put it past SE, it kinda seems silly to have relatively high computer spec requirements, yet cap network speed for dial-up modems.

Can the PS3 even connect using dial-up?

I don't think you have to worry about it being capped at 56kbps, as those low numbers are likely kilobits per second (kbps) this time around.

I don't think it is a coincidence that they took the screenshot showing FFXIV using 1627kbps and exactly 768kbps upload. If anything, this suggests they are going to design FFXIV to be playable on no less than your typical low-end 1500kbps download / 768kbps upload ADSL connection.

From that screenshot, it appears that the upload speed to the FFXIV servers will be capped at 768kbps, while the download speed from the servers could possibly remain uncapped.

Rather then just changing the numbers in the link, this will have all the images up, as well as some jp info if it hasn't already been translated.

I think the first shot is the one you should look to for gameplay. The other stuff is definitely movie stuff and probably comes from the opening movie shown at VanaFest. It's just a guess, but since I did get to read Elmer's writeup before it was removed, it definitely fits what he described. Even so, cutscenes are like my favorite part of the game, so that's awwwesome! (I also didn't notice the surname thing, pretty sweet!)

It bothers me when I see people complaining about the 56k cap in ffxi. As if it actually mattered in the slightest way. In 5 years of playing the game not once did it ever effect ANYTHING as far as game play. In fact uncapped would have made besieged crash the server.

Its about as much meaning as gear score being a measure performance in wow. Its a number that hold little meaning other than epeen I guess.

**** if I care the game is capped at 56k..

No, I doubt it. Sending 768kbps? That's a lot. That's almost my up cap (1mbps) and it would destroy my connection. I have a 15Mbps down, 1Mbps up connection and that's pretty decent.

Well I doubt even more it is 768 bits per second (0.09KB/s), and even 768 bytes per second (0.75KB/s) seems like an insanely low cap for a game like FFXIV.

On the other hand 768 kilobits per second (93.75KB/s) is a significant number.

Everywhere a broadband connection is available, a connection with at least 768kbps upload speed should also be available.

In all seriousness, 768kbps is nothing. Most ISP's in the USA are just stingy with upload speed bandwidth, but the few which offer FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) are not.

I live in California, USA and my ISP offers 3Mbps/3Mbps for $20/month, 15Mbps/15Mbps for $35/month, 25Mbps/25Mbps for $60/month, and 50Mbps/50Mbps for $150/month.

So, with 768kbps being the lowest common denominator for broadband upload speed, it sounds like a very reasonable cap for the maximum upload speed FFXIV would ever try to use, and being a maximum cap, you shouldn't assume FFXIV is going to use 768kbps 100% of the time.

I doubt its 768 kbps, yea sure most can accomadate this but that's assuming they have a constantly stable connection, I have 50 mbps down and 1.5 mbps up but its not always that depending on the usage in the area, plus I will be running 2 verisons of the game as my partner will no doubt want to play it.

As the guy above said in all the time I played FF11 I didn't come across much in the way of restrictions due to bandwidth, in fact I get 10 times more lag in WoW than I do in FF11.

Unless you are in a high population area like (old) Jeuno or Whitegate its not guna matter anyway.

I'm sure SE have looked into it enough to choose what is right, Broadband in Japan is generally better than the majority of the world so its not like they are used to slow transfer speeds.

I just noticed on the action bar, there are cooldown timers.

Praise the world. They're orange glowy bars under the buttons. I will take it.
