How much overall CGI do you suppose there will be?Follow

In FFXI, all we got was the initial 5 minute long CGI (which was wasome) off the disc.

This time around, it'd be nice if there were more instances of CGI cutscenes.

Probably not a ton. CGI is extremely expensive and time consuming to produce. It would be nice if their was a CGI scene for each major advancement in the primary story arch, but I'm not really expecting it.

Considering games are getting to the point that they are just as hard to make as CG, i think we will have a lot more. Even WoW doesn't have much until recently.

Most games now could probably have their models pass for CG if they were highly rendered. From the looks of the screens though i don't care about CG cause the game looks amazing.

I hate watching FFXI's opening CGI. When it first came out our only PC in the house was downstairs, and like everyone could see me filling up at that cutscene.

I hope FFXIV's doesn't make me want to cry :(

I'm not a huge fan of CGI, sure it looks nice and all but I would rather see in game cutscenes, CGI always pull you out of the experience of a game because it looks so much better than what you were playing.

Personally I don't want to see any CGI in FF14 well after the intro.

WoW only has CGI for expansion intros. Rest is just real time rendered cut scenes, which are very few. FFXI has way more real time rendered cut scenes, but just as much CGI.

I'm happy with just real time rendered cut scenes because Square-Enix has put so much detail in the character models.

I'm playing FFXIII right now and I have to look at the cut scene carefully because it isn't that easy to distinguish CGI from the real time rendered cut scenes.

Not much, maybe and open movie and some cutscenes here in there that don't involve you. Alot of the CS in FFXI always showed you in them so they can't CGI.

This. In game graphics for the win.

I have always liked the CGI cutscenes in Final Fantasy they are always so beautiful made, like watching small movies. It would be cool if there where some in the main story in FFXIV :)

Real-time rendered cutscenes is Crystal Tool's specialty.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Tools

The real question is if they've actually put themselves in a position to make the best use of this effect.

I don't really have a preference, though honestly, prerendered movies on PC tend to look worse than in-game graphics these days due to compression and upscaling. I'm not saying the prerendered scenes we've seen of FFXIV aren't better-looking than the game itself, but really, they don't need to be.

Anyway, I wouldn't expect much prerendering in FFXIV. Remember that the reason almost all cutscenes in FFXI are rendered in real-time is because they involve your character, and I don't expect FFXIV to be any different in that regard. I do think really fancy prerendered boss attacks a la FFXII would be cool, though.

With an Engine and Graphics this advance I can't agree that they would waste resources/storage space on loads of CGI.

Opening movie plus some would be my guess.

Considering that the game runs using the Crystal Tools engine, the same engine that was used to develop FXIII. I think much of the "cinema" we would see will be the same scripting styles used in FFXI.

Its a wonderful thing to see Graphic capability catchup with pre-rendered CGI in a sense. Fully CGI movies are slowly going to be things of the past as you can just use the in-game engine to render your scenes with the same graphical attention to detail.

I personally don't like pre-rendered CGI very much because it does not have the ability to display your own character and breaks the visual continuity of the game.

We won't be seeing CGIs as video clips. The engine FFXIV runs on is good enough to do in-engine cutscenes.

Grow up, guys. CGI for video games is so 1990's.

MMOs such as FFXIV could always make CGI cutscenes from a first-person perspective. That way your character would not show, so they wouldn't have to animate it several hundred times for every body and armor type lol. I have always wondered why no MMO has tried this before. I do realize it would seem kind of weird at first, though.

While i undestand some ppl dont like cgi and why, if SE is going to take away my control of my character for a long Cutscene i dont see why if it doesnt involve your character it can't be in cgi as even if the In game engine is getting towards real cgi theres still limitations on the ingame engine such as facial movements. It would be nice if the visions of the past that SE have been talking about were in cgi but unless they are few and far between we'd probbably be lucky to get that much.
