After reading the articles on more information concerning how battle works and the strategy it now takes. I thought i remembered reading somewhere where they changed it from either turn based to real time or real time to turn based..and i was pretty sure the latter was true. So then the magazines speculation of "real time battle simulation" would more be turn based battle simulation? im not sure how that would work..and if i have it backwards please correct me..i did play FFXI but its been quite a long time since then.

whats your take and opinions on this.

What do you mean by "real time"? As far as I know, the combat has always happened in real time, and is turn based.

thats contradictory real-time and turn based are two separate things. Turn based and real-time can easily be distinguished by FF6's combat system of turning real-time on or turn based on. Where as real-time enemies can attack regardless of what youve chosen to attack or do so if you just sit there youll die. And turn based you have to take your turn before the enemies can take theirs.

Well, I think they intended it to be another form of ATB from the start. Not real-time, as in spam attack button to make an action whenever you want, but you still have to wait for your turn before you can attack again, although you don't have to wait for enemy or others to attack before you can do another action, but only the meter to fill.

They are changing the speed of the combat I believe and now there is an action bar the combat will appear to be more fluid no doubt.

FFXI was real time =D if you go up to a mob and hit it, then go make yourself a coffee. When you come back your dead, they dont wait for your turn =x

There's no way an online game could NOT be real time fighting. It would be a nightmare to be in a party with other people in a turn based game - it works with strategy games, but not with RPGs. Sitting around, waiting for people to click their next move would be ridiculous.

As has been mentioned, waiting for ability cooldowns is similar to the ATB - you have to wait for your abilities to be up to use them. By that token, if you take away other games' auto attacks, most MMOs function in a system somewhat like ATB. I don't really think what they're doing is going to be that similar to ATB - you're not going to have to wait for your bar to charge to execute and action. Depending on how the TP/AP/whatever point system works, you'll always have abilities you CAN use; the important part will be WHEN you use them, if all the hints about increased strategy and battle tactics are done well.

i dont know about you guys but the more i hear about it the more it sounds like their really trying to incorporate what FF12 was like with alil more strategy involve i mean these are key things that just made me think (mp doesnt regenerate automatically) neither did FF12 (party vs party) was normally groups of the same monsters beating you up like a group of skeletons (you pretty much had spawns over and over through a whole floor there wasnt very many places to rest) kind of like how they said groups would be on the move. (you regenerate hp as you move "you HAD to move i should say for mp and the like") they are talking about hp recovery as you move.

I figure a turn based online game could work, the turns would just have to be rather short and worth the "why not real time?" decision.
Altantica works like that, uses a battle grid. From the looks of FF13 though, Square-Enix has already done a ton in making real-time battles that still have a turn-based feeling and meshing together for an engaging experience.
