As we learn more information about FFXIV, and the unofficial and sure to change beta info starts rolling out faster and faster, were there predictions that you had called that are coming true? For me, I posted an article on my now neglected blog way back in August:

http://ffxiv-hub.blogspot.com/2009/08/weapon-skills-not-just-for-melee.html

Which looks like with the latest patch of information, is exactly what is going to happen in XIV. What about you? Make any claims, even if only in your head, that you thought were too outlandish to be true, only to have them announced? Got any now? Post them and we can check back in a few months and see what you called, way back before it was a reality.

I'm gonna say that the opening cg movie is gonna be awesome and get you pumped to get into the game. Then you come to find out that it means nothing and takes place somewhere you will never see or interact with until maybe seven years later...maybe.

I pretty much called the similarities to SaGa games, such as weapon skills being a heavy focus of battles, having plenty of them to choose from and all with different effects, with a different list of skills unique to each weapon/class. Furthermore, the emphasis on positioning/formation with different styles of AoE (especially conal) is very SaGa-like, albeit in a realtime system now.

I'm also going to go ahead and call weapon skill "sparking", the process in SaGa by which you randomly learn new weapon skills by repeatedly using your existing ones. Certain skills branch into new ones, and of course your stats need to be high enough to learn the better skills. I expect you'd still learn some abilities just by leveling up in FFXIV, but it would be cool to have some skills that you "spark" on the random.

my predictions are a bit different.

Campaign system will be in full force in FFXIV. ( I realize that's already pretty obvious however keep reading )
With that said, Blizzard is also going to have a similar system in Cataclysm marking a deeper gap between horde and alliance! ZOMG! Campaign system in WoW but with a PVP twist!? Cataclysm will also have a new guild leveling system much like FFXIV with special new option including its own list of customizations and even a talent tree just like FFXIV will have!

Cataclysm will be released 2 weeks before FFXIV WHAT A COINCIDENCE!!
Most of these new features will suddenly be announced by blizzard about cataclysm only days after FFXIV beta goes into full swing! ( Once they have a chance to confirm these features are in fact in FFXIV! )

gonna throw in my official 'calling it' from another thread, re: armor

Quote:
My current theory is we won't be equipping individual pieces of armor, rather entire sets. It would solve the old hodgepodge ugly armor sets that result when you're wearing red gloves, a purple hat, green pants, a blue body and and brown shows. This is an MMO, not a disco strobe light.

I 100% doubt we'll see 16 slots again. Maybe an armor set and some accessories, via the last few installments of the FF main series. This, besides making your character look put together at all times and not a mess of misc. equip, will also reduce inventory space necessary.

Yeah I have a strong feeling there's going to be a system in place very similar to what we have in XI with BLU for equipping spells. They've hinted at it somewhat in early interviews.

I can't see that happening, for a number of reasons. Firstly I get the impression that they intend for this game to be way more customizable than traditional MMO's, and only being able to equip pre-arranged sets would sort of defeat this philosophy. Secondly, I'm trying to think in endgame terms, where the goal is to obtain gear. You're going to kill an HNM and he drops your gloves, hat, pants, body, boots all at once? I can't see it happening.

That's because we're still thinking too much in context of the current gen of MMOs. FFXIV wants to innovate. I'm pretty sure that they've already stated they're looking for you to obtain more from the NM/HNM crop than just gear. Ways to customize your character in other ways. Secondly, think of it like this: the HNM you defeat drops a set of gear that you only get by defeating that NM. If each NM dropped different sets, then you've still got the same amount of total variety. Plus, there are things like accessories, consumable and weapons for the NMs to drop as well.

We know FFXIV is probably going to be MUCH more focused on your weapon and how your character is set up than your armor. I wouldn't be surprised to see the armor slots DRASTICALLY decreased.

Will it only be one? Maybe not. Probably not. But I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised. Sixteen again? Very surprised.

Ah, baseless speculation thread.
I like these.

1) Chocomule; esp as extra inventory for DoL classes.

2) Players can equip inactive skills to an active class, but weaponskills are non-transferable because they're designed around the physical properties of that weapon.

3) Hp recover mode won't interact with your TP, making it a perfectly functional part of normal play everybody can take advantage of.

4) The abbreviation of Pugilist and the acronym for Pick Up Group is going to cause some early head scratching.

5) Elements (and affinities) - will be divided by function, either by design or by playerbase decisions.

I call that FFIV will have some equivelent to a Maat fight, and it's gonna be a pain in the A**.

I call that Airships will be used as transport and bombing platforms that your nukers can rain death from.

I call that there will be many cuddly little critters roaming the land and devouring lowbies.

I Call that Chocobos will be much more involved than we can forsee.

And finally,

I call that someone, possibly several someones, will crunch the complex class system into 4 or 5 cookie cutter builds that will be the only thing that can get invites at endgame. Mostly because the DPS douchenozzles will want to crunch numbers more than actually playig the game, lol.

Those are my calls, most of them are probably wrong but I wanted to go out on a limb as opposed to something like "Healer gear will be red and white, nuker gear will be black and blue." :)

Hmmm I call that...

exFFXI players will see Pugilist and worry about getting screwdivered or make screwdiver comments at least.

WoW players/haters will moan and gripe that XXX feature is just like WOW and how FFXIV is ruined forever.

Ch*ck N*rris jokes will plague the lowbie areas of every city for at least a month.

There will be at least 1 character on every server with a name of or relating to: Cloud, Sephiroth, Ch*ck N*rris, Legolas, Drizzt and perhaps Gandalf.

There will be intense, horrible and even excruciating lag for at least 2 weeks just about everywhere.

There will be more Lalafels than all the other races combined, they will all spam /panic every minute or so, and everyone else will call them Lolifels or perhaps Lalafails when they start dancing and begging for gil.

Edit: LOL the name associated with the initials C.N. gets filtered as Allakhazam here. XD

I lol'd but aren't surnames going to be unique to one character unless you get the players permission to use that surname?

How I think it works: the very first person to make a new char calls it John Doe,
the second person calls his char John Smith : can't have John as its taken,
the third calls her char Jane Doe : can't have Doe as its taken.
Now Jane Doe calls herself Jane Toe and after befriending John Doe in game he gives her permission to change to his surname, she is now Jane Doe.
John Smith on the other hand can't use the name John at all ever so he either tries another server or changes to Johnny Smith etc

From what I understand it's more like:

Player makes char named Bob Jones.
Player 2 tries to make a char named Bob. Can't. Need to choose surname.
Player 2 makes his char named Bob Smith.
Player 3 can have his char named Bob Dabobster, etc.

As long as "FirstName Surname" is not identical, either one can be reused.

This would be stupid. It'd be better off if they went with the system the Tabula Rasa developers used, by tying your surname to your account and letting you have any first name you wanted.

If you don't make first names unique the already proposed feature to change surnames to match your friends would not work, characters would then be able to have the same first and last names, and that is never going to happen, hardly stupid.

No that would not work because you would not be able to change your surname to that of another player as it may lead to having both names the same, not happening. The only way around that is unique first name and unique second name ORallowing people to change their first name but that could be exploited (to keep changing names) so won't happen.
It will be both names that need to be unique on creation as that is the most logical and therefore simplest system.
Sending a /tell will only require typing the first name if all first names are unique, another reason that all first names will be unique. It's the only way that makes any sense at all.
Please don't start an argument here over this, there is a thread for it already.

I've thought of all this expect I think chocobos will be available to everyone from the start just like teleportation and instead you have to undertake a quest similar to the license quest to raise your own chocobo.

I really love the idea of using chocobos as pack mules though.
