Electronic Boutique, EB games, is now officially taking pre-orders for FFXIV. This is a very good sign for a 4Q release date.

No it's not. EB games and Gamestop are owned by the same company and regularly make up placeholder dates so they can get the game into their systems. If you read the details they even tell you so.

Edit: Quote added, since it was obviously necessary.

I'm pretty sure as long as a game exists they'll let you preorder it at places like that....

Um.. I pre-ordered from EB quite some time ago ;)

EB will take a pre-order on just about anything as long as they can find it in their system, hah. With some restrictions I'm sure.. but still, my husband brought home the pre-order on XIV for me awhile ago now.

I was referring to the Q4 release date indication, not about being able to pre-order. Gamestop and EB will allow you to pre-order just about anything they have information on.

I see, well I'll make a more appropriate response then :)

While I'll admit that the retail store activity might have a propensity toward determining a release date for a normal game -- the release date of FFXIV? Will almost entirely depend on how the Beta goes. And the Beta, will depend on how the Alpha goes (as already stated in previous interviews).

Regular video games don't have public alphas and betas, only demos. Reason being is that they work all the details out in the "lab" before it ever hits the shelf.

A game like FFXIV requires the more public Beta testing options to go well before they can release the game to the public. If the game turns out to be buggy as **** in trials, if people uncover issues that the developers didn't even anticipate, they're going to take another quarter to fix the thing before they release it -- at least, we can only hope they will, rather than release a semi-completed product that will just anger everyone even further than a postponement will.

I understand and appreciate everyone's want to "predict" the release date based on x-factor or y-factor... fact is though, it's all just palm reading at the end of the day -- And psychics are frauds.

The game will be ready when it's ready. An EB release date really says nothing other than the fact that they are willing to take your money in anticipation of the game. And, as I stated, the game could be pre-ordered for a long time now if you walk into just about any EB games and ask to put five bucks down on it. Therefor, my original post is actually relevant.

I would say that the announcements from Square Enix about an impending Beta test are what caused EB to "officially" put the game up for pre-order. I think it is them who are using Square Enix as an indicator that there will be a forthcoming release at the end of the year, and therefor they are jumping on the bandwagon to get sales going. That, of course, is just a theory like any other of course! :) But it makes more sense than EB's official pre-order having any indication whatsoever toward a Q4 release date, when the release date for FFXIV will almost certainly depend on factors that have not yet come to pass.

Hope that's more detailed / relevant xD

Edit: For the record, I still believe in a Q4 release date, don't get me wrong. But only because SE has repeatedly said they were on track for one -- again, I recognize it's dependence on the Beta testing.

This is 100% true. I worked as a Manager for both EB and GameStop for 6 years. If its not in the system, we could always just make up a generic reserve using the games title. Now if the game is in the system with a release date, that is set by the home office and those dates come from the reps of various game companies. Though with MMO's, date changes are very common as they work out the bugs.

Sometimes you will see an EB Games and a Gamestop in the same mall but they are really both Gamestop they only left some of the stores as EB Games to have 2 stores in the same mall to get around naming issues where some malls have rules about having the same store in a mall.

Got two pre-orders today (EB Canada) :) Rep says going to be "scheduled" for June 21st release date.

Now I have to get working on figuring out the current chat scheme to make a jp<->en translator for that one too ^^

Like Final Fantasy XI, the game specs will be extremely high for the time, but in about 5 years, an average machine can run it on max settings with little to no issues. Tanaka also expressed interest in making a benchmark program available.

So FFXIV is only going to have a 3-4 month combined testing phase for both Alpha and Beta? That aught to make things interesting.

I put about as much stock in what a part-time game store salesman says as far as release dates go, as I do with most information that comes from the internet.

I can guarantee you that June is hogwash.

1. Beta test phases will take longer than June. This is pretty much assumed since the alpha either just started or is about to start (Don't know since i haven't received anything).

2. I don't know about EB Canada, but EB/Gamestop U.S. just got FFXIV added to their systems on 3/9...I know becuase i work there, and i've been checking everyday so i could pre-order my ps3 and pc copies. So whatever they pre-ordered for you wasn't ffxiv, but probably something else that they will "switch" to ffxiv just to get a reserve. Again, EB Canada probably has a different corporate group than EB/GS U.S. so it is possible they have had it in their system longer than us, but i dunno.

For the record, Gamestop U.S. has it for 12/31/10, as i stated in another thread, its a placeholder date we use for 4th quarter, but its not a guarantee either; Mass Effect 2 was once 12/31/09 before it was pushed to 1/26/10.
