Question on classes in FFXIVFollow

I was just reading a post about some classes on FFXIV over at http://www.ffxivwired.com
The classes are starting to sound quite interesting, interesting enough for me to pick a class that i want to try out first. So i decided i would go with Archer, but i was wondering what you peoples oppinions are on the classes? Does Archer sound like a good idea to start with?
I love distance so i'm most likely going Archer, but i just wanted to know.

The game has just barely started its beta...if that. Nobody can recommend a class to you because the only people who have any direct experience with them aren't allowed to talk about them. It's too early yet. Your question is one that you might ask once the game had been released but frankly, people who ask what class they should play need a fish to the head. Nobody can decide that for you. When the game is released, try what looks interesting to you. If it turns out you don't like it, try something else.

Alpha isn't even close to starting.

We're all in the same boat as you, really. No one outside of SE has played it, so only you know what you want to play.

Feel free to look at what information is available in our wikibase here: http://ffxiv.zam.com/wiki/Armoury_System_(FFXIV)

I'm going Gladiator, because I'm a Tank. Been a tank all my MMO life, which is a long time. So what's a Tank to do? Tank!

My advice is to keep an open mind and study other classes when the game comes out, no matter what you start as. It's definitely fun to start thinking about it now, no doubt (I'm liking Gladiator a lot so far, myself). But to me, there are so many factors that I won't know about until I get my hands on the game, that there's no reason to limit oneself. That's the nice thing about being able to switch to any class with the same character.

Well I'm not going to make the same mistake I made when I started playing FFXI and start with Monk (Pugilist). I think there will probably be a sort of luck factor about which job you pick and how 'good' it actually turns out to be to play. One of my biggest considerations is the longevity of the class - how long it will be playable/how much it will cost/will it get invites etc?

I never pick classes depending on "how good" they are. I always play the class that I enjoy the most.

Archer/Ranger all the way. xD

Lancer sounds really appealing to me, but I like to choose a class that there isn't usually much of.

Anyways, I wouldn't choose a class and set it in stone just yet. Give it a few months then decide, theres still tons of information to be released on classes and there will probably be a few classes that haven't been announced :). The game still has to go through beta and some details of classes might change.

I have my eyes set on Marauder. I haven't really played a brute melee damage class yet. I'm a bit worried though, because it seems like the game is going to be about moving around a lot and Marauder increases in strenght when he stands still...

I plan on choosing a class from each discipline to play, in an attempt at versatility.

Disciple of War: Lancer - I wanted to be a Dragoon in FFXI, and ended up being a Paladin because my friends hate to tank. This time, I'd like to see my idea through to the end.

Disciple of Magic: none chosen yet - Conjurer and Thaumaturge don't appeal to me, and no other classes have been revealed, so I'm keeping this option open for now.

Disciple of the Hand: Culinarian - when the battle's over and we're sitting around the campfire, I'll be the one providing the food.

Disciple of the Land: Fisherman - goes hand-in-hand with Culinarian, and will likely be my first class, in the hopes of providing long-term income.

As far as race goes, I'm planning on Roegadyn. I was a Galka for 6 years in FFXI, and he kinda grew on me. If skin color is customizable (and I think it will be, since I've seen them with both green and gray skin), I'm going to give him a tan, to reflect all the time spent outside fishing. Then all I'll need is a good fishing hat.

Let me steal your form and post mine the same way.

Disciple of War: Lancer, I did play as a DRG in FFXI. It was by far my favorite class and I look forward to trying it again here.

Disciple of Magic: Unknown, I'm leaning towards a healer, but that's my DRG/WHM talking

Disciple of Land: Not sure, but leaning towards miner. 1st because I don't have seem to care for botanist, and 2nd cause miner seems it would help my choice for....

Disciple of Hand: Alchemist, I never got into crafting in FFXI, but I was always interested in trying this out there. I think here I'll give it a good shot. Especially if there are ANY truth to the rumors of DoH being able to customize weapons during repair.

For race, I'm gonna be Elezen. I was an elven before and that's always been what calls to me during character creation. I don't know if it's because of how the are shown in Lord of the Rings, or Eregon, or other books. What is getting me worried is seeing all the pictures of lalafell Lancers. But it doesn't matter much to me, Elezen it is, stats be dammed!

I don't think the intent with the pictures of Lalafell's as lancer is to show they will be better at it, but more that they will be equal to other races at it. SE is smart enough to know a large number of people that are watching the info they are slowly revealing, are/were FFXI players. We also see Elv as mages, and I believe this is just another attempt to show that the old 'this race does this better', is not going to apply the same way to FFXIV. Just how I interpreted it at least.

Agreed on the point to show that race does not have the impact on class like FFXI did.
