I've been getting a lot of Google Alerts lately with links to sites that simply copy and paste Elmer's posts and don't even bother to save the images to their own sites. We've now decided to have The Hoff help us out with this!

I'm confused, so is this some special technique so that if someone links an image from your site, it will display the hoff on their site instead of the original image?

If so, that's brilliant!

Mmm lol, Thank god for the Hoff. I've noticed a couple sites with very similar news post. ZAM is safer now with Hoff guarding it.

Yes and it's site specific, so people can still link to our images if they want, but if we find someone ripping us off, we make this happen. ;)

You know what they say. The Germans love David Hasselhoff.

If it were my site, I'd send them the picture of him lying on the floor drunk trying to eat a burger.

It's called hotlinking and is a way for websites to save on bandwidth, they simply use other websites to host the images and link directly to it.

It's very easy to fix though. Websites run on Apache use a .htaccess file where you can add some nice command type things, one of them prevents hotlinking. When you visit a website you get things your browser sends to the website in question, including referrer. You can set the .htaccess file up so if the referrer to the image is not on an included list (ie. zam.com) it can either refuse to display the image or, optionally, display any image of your choice. It looks a little something like this:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(.+\.)?allakhazam\.com/ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteRule .*\.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ http://allakhazam.com/the_hoff.jpg [L]

First line turns on the rewrite engine, the second line is of acceptable referrers, the 3rd line is a "no referrer so show the image", if you don't have that you can't directly put in an image url into your browser, it'll class it as a hotlink, the final line is the image shown by other websites, in this case, the hoff.

All this ******** coding over hotlinked images. Is it really worth the Hassel?

It would be funnier if it were Rick Astley.

It's not really coding as such, it helps to think of it as hrm, a config file where the site stores all it's configurations. I use it myself on my one website as I had a particularly nice graphic which some bright spark hotlinked onto a very popular website which sent me well over my bandwidth allowance forcing my ISP to suspend my account.

Once the .htaccess is done, that's it, it's a site wide change (or directory change if you put the .htaccess in its own folder), of course, a misconfiguration could break it, just adding (for instance) allakhazam.com would block zam.com, just adding ffxi.allakhazam.com would block ffxiv.allakhazam.com etc.

Yep, I'm a geek and proud :P
