Let me explain this once more since a lot of people seem to have a hard to **** near impossible time understanding. Not everyone wants the name Cloud, Sephiroth, or Goku. Some people have names that tie in closer to other aspects of their lives. Maybe it's from their favorite anime? Maybe it's from their favorite TV show, maybe it's their favorite singer or bass player in their favorite band? In these cases they might have quite a good chance if they can be around when the servers go live to snag the name that might be very important to them. It might not be very well known, but when you give BETA players HALF A YEAR OR MORE to take these names up, then guess what? Some one is bound to eventually take up these lesser known names. So anything with any remote resemblance to something well known will probably be unavailable.
Let me explain this once more.
1. I never said everyone wants the name Cloud, Sephiroth, or Goku. So there's no point for you to bring that up at all, unless your intention is simply to insult me, but that's on you anyway.
2. I understand that some less popular names can be taken by the beta players (e.g.: Bel Crono taken). So there's no point for you to repeat that point again either.
3. I also understand that those names can be important to some players, but I also understand that there's no reason as to why anyone should put so much importance on one single name. Even Pikko (with all due respect to her) still plays FFXI after having to change the name despite how important the name Pikko is. If she can do it, so can you.
Also, I know a lot of people like to poke fun and make witty little metaphorical paragraphs about why being equal at the start of a game is no big deal, but if you have one eye and half sense you could deduce the fact that If you can't make it online when the servers go up for personal reasons, then that is your own fault. Even if you can't help it, you still had the chance there for you. When you don't HAVE the chance, if you are willing to be there from the soonest point you possibly can but not have any chance at the name you might want, then there is a problem there. How is this so hard to understand?
Now this is where you're exactly right, but it's also exactly the point to show that your understanding is totally wrong. What you're saying is that if we can't make it as early as we can, it's our own fault so it's fair game that we lost. So if the server goes online and for whatever reason SE picked a proper JP-based time, and somehow that translated to 11AM USA time where the school kids are at school, and the working adults are at work, you're saying that it's okay because it's their own fault for being at school/work instead of in front of the character creation screen. Fair enough. My point with that is simply to show that SE's launch time would be more important (dis)advantage because depending on the time and your real-life commitment, you can lose not only names, but also playing time. As we both agree, that's our own fault though for being on the wrong timezone despite the fact that SE is the one who picked that time. If that's fair enough, then let's move on.
But the problem is the next part. When you don't HAVE the chance
We don't have the chance? Really? Are you saying that BETA testers will be stealing ALL the names in ALL the servers? If that's the case, then yeah you're right that it's unfair that ALL the BETA players are taking ALL the names in ALL the servers. But unfortunately, I don't think it'll happen like that. As far as I understand, BETA testing is mostly (all?) done in one same server to maximize number of testers to test the capability of the server. What can be done in that one server during the test theoritically will work on other identical servers. So if FFXIV will have 10 servers at launch, the BETA won't be done on all 10 servers at the same time. They might jump from one server to another to simply test that every server is working, but they wouldn't really need to test all servers at the same time.
Therefore, the names that the BETA testers will keep would only be 1 unique-to-each-other name. So if you're Endless Journey on BETA, you can't be Ending Journey on launch if you want to keep the name. You have to start from scratch and compete with others for the name Ending Journey. But unfortunately for you, someone else used Ending Journey on BETA and you can't compete with him. So pick another server that has no BETA-name taken. That's the important part. You still have the chance, just on a different server. The BETA names won't be on ALL servers. If your lovely name is taken by BETA testers, it's only going to happen on one server, not ALL.
If the name you want is taken on ALL servers, then you have to face it, the name is too common/popular and most likely not as special as you think it is. Or there are way too many people who think the same like you to pick the exact same first and last name.
Right now I'm a bit sad that my Destiny Katayama name is already taken >.<!
